Electron transfer is at the heart of many fundamental physical, chemical, and biochemical processes essential for life. The exact simulation of these reactions is often hindered by the large number of degrees of freedom and by the essential role of quantum effects. Here, we experimentally simulate a paradigmatic model of molecular electron transfer using a multispecies trapped-ion crystal, where the donor-acceptor gap, the electronic and vibronic couplings, and the bath relaxation dynamics can all be controlled independently. By manipulating both the ground-state and optical qubits, we observe the real-time dynamics of the spin excitation, measuring the transfer rate in several regimes of adiabaticity and relaxation dynamics. Our results provide a testing ground for increasingly rich models of molecular excitation transfer processes that are relevant for molecular electronics and light-harvesting systems. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

The hydroxyapatite (HA) is a biocompatible and bioactive biomaterial used as bone substitute, however, the high crystallinity of HA and consequently its low solubility may be a limitation for its clinical use. In order to improve the biosorption of HA, the partial substitutions in the chemical structure and doping with small amounts of impurities have been study. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of 3% Zinc-containing nanostructured carbonated hydroxyapatite (ZncHA) compared with the carbonated hydroxyapatite (cHA), both synthesized at 37°C and non-sintered, using as control the stoichiometric HA microspheres in subcutaneous of mice. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Vibrational Spectroscopy in Infra Red Fourier Transform (FTIR) were used to characterize the biomaterials. In vivo test was performed in BALB/c mice by implanting of HA, cHA and ZncHA spheres in the subcutaneous tissue for 1, and 9 weeks (n=5). The negative control consisted in incision without material implantation (Sham group). The samples were histological processed to descriptive analysis of biological effect. The microscopic analysis showed a similar granulation reaction between groups at the first experimental period. In 9 weeks there was a time dependent biosorption of cHA compared with other groups. In conclusion, the biomaterials tested were biocompatible and cHA group showed a significant biosorption in comparison with HA and ZncHA groups. The doping of zinc did not influence the biocompatibility of biomaterial, however, change the biosorption response. © 2016 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The filamentous fungus Moniliophthora perniciosa (Stahel) Aime & Phillips-Mora is a hemibiotrophic Basidiomycota that causes witches' broom disease of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.). This disease has resulted in a severe decrease in the Brazilian cocoa production, which changed the position of Brazil in the market from the second largest cocoa exporter to a cocoa importer. Fungal mitochondrial plasmids are usually invertrons encoding DNA and RNA polymerases. Plasmid insertion into host mitochondrial genomes are probably associated to modifications in host generation time, which can be involved in fungal aging. This association suggests activity of polymerases, and these can be used as new targets for drugs against mitochondrial activity of fungi, more specifically against witches' broom disease. DNA and RNA polymerases of M. perniciosa mitochondrial plasmid were completely sequenced and their models were built by Comparative Modeling approach using Swiss-PdbViewer. The DNA and RNA polymerases models were refined by a set of Molecular Mechanics (MM) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation in water. The resultant models were evaluated by Procheck 3.0 and ANOLEA. Ramachandran plots showed 97% and 98% of residues in favorable region for DNA and RNA polymerases, respectively. Potential Energy plots showed, in general, that all atoms of sidechain had favorable thermodynamic values for both proteins. This study can contribute for the development of new alternatives for controlling the fungal agent of witches' broom disease.

Objective: Although the World health Organization and many governments have recategorized COVID-19 as a generally mild to moderately severe disease, consecutive pandemic waves driven by immune escape variants have underscored the need for timely and accurate prediction of the next outbreak. Nevertheless, little attention has been paid to translating genomic data and infection- and vaccine-induced immunity into direct estimates. Methods: We retrieved epidemiologic and genomic data shortly before pandemic waves across 14 developed countries from late 2021 to mid-2022 and examined associations between early-stage variant competition, infection- and vaccine-induced immunity, and the time intervals between wave peaks. We applied regression analysis and the generalized estimating equation method to construct an inferential model. Results: Each per cent increase in the proportion of a new variant was associated with a 1.0% reduction in interpeak intervals on average. Curvilinear associations between vaccine-induced immunity and outcome variables were observed, suggesting that reaching a critical vaccine distribution rate may decrease the caseload of the upcoming wave. Conclusions: By leveraging readily accessible pre-outbreak genomic and epidemiologic data, our results not only substantiate the predictive potential of early variant fractions but also propose that immunity acquired through infection alone may not sufficiently mitigate transmission. Conversely, a rapid and widespread vaccination initiative appears to be correlated with a decrease in disease incidence. © 2023 The Authors

For many years, what has been known about recovery from addictive behaviors has come solely from treatment studies. Only recently has the study of recoveries in the absence of formal treatment or self-help groups provided an alternative source of information.;This book on the process of self-change from addictive behaviors is the first of its kind, as it presents more than research findings. Rather, it presents the process of self-change from several different perspectives - environmental, cross-cultural, prevention and interventions at both societal and individual level. It provides strategies for how health care practitioners and government policy makers alike can aid and foster self-change. Directions for future research priorities are also presented.

Reducing the Travel Burden for Patients to Access Specialized Medicines in Paraná, Brazil

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the potential reduction in distance and travel time with a hypothetical municipal distribution of specialized component medicines in the state of Paraná. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Distances and travel times from all the 1025 residential locations in the state of Paraná to dispensing pharmacies were calculated in 2 different models: centralized model with drugs dispensed in the 22 state-owned pharmacies and decentralized model with drugs dispensed in the 399 municipal pharmacies. Road routes were calculated using the Google Maps Distance Matrix API and Euclidean distance using the haversine formula for the southern hemisphere. A sinuosity index was computed by the quotient between these 2 distances. Differences were evaluated through bivariate analyses and effect size measures were reported. Results: In the centralized model, the mean distance to the pharmacy was 59.5 km (SD 34.1), with a travel time of 1.0 hour (SD 0.5) and 579 residential locations (56.7%) more than 50 km away from the pharmacy, 286 (28.0%) between 25 and 50 km, and 156 (15.3%) less than 25 km. In the decentralized model, the mean distance was 10.8 km (SD 16.6), with a travel time of 0.2 hours (SD 0.3) and 14 locations (1.4%) more than 50 km away from the pharmacy, 96 (9.4%) between 25 and 50 km, and 911 (89.2%) less than 25 km. The decentralized model significantly reduced the sinuosity index. Conclusions: Implementing a decentralized dispensing of the specialized component drugs in the state of Paraná would produce a significant reduction in distance and travel time for patients enhancing drug accessibility. © 2024 International Society for health Economics and Outcomes Research

Goals: Identifying the prevalence and risk factors of childhood dysphonia in children turning 5 years old;and assess the link with the interactional, behavioral, sociodemographic, economic, and biological indicators Method: Analytical, transversal, nested within a birth cohort 5 years after its creation. Original cohort biologic data were recovered from the previous database. The current demographic and personal data were acquired from the official health institutions where the individuals were found. We managed to find 371 preschoolers, both sexes, enrolled in 141 public and private schools. Face-to-face interviews were performed with mothers regarding maternal and child health and biological, sociodemographic, economic, interactional-affective, and behavioral indicators. Speech therapists used the Consensus of Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice authorized for Portuguese for the perceptual-auditory judgment of children's voices. Bivariate and multivariate analyzes of the data were performed. A significance level of 5% (P < 0.05) was considered in all analyses. Results: The prevalence of mild-moderate general dysphonia occurred in 26.4% of the preschoolers assessed with tense, rough, and breathy voice quality;low pitch;strong loudness and laryngeal resonance. There was a contrast between preschoolers with dysphonia, calm temperament, and family income of up to three minimum wages and those without these characteristics. We also have noted that a greater chance of dysphonia occurred in preschoolers with a calm temperament, family income of up to three minimum wages, nocturnal bruxism up to 3 years old and who did not use a pacifier. Conclusion: There was a high prevalence of dysphonia at 5 years old. Biological indicators have an impact on voice, while interactional, behavioral, sociodemographic, and economic indicators have a higher impact.
