Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can be used to temporarily and reversibly modulate brain functions and is an increasingly utilized tool to investigate the relationships between brain and behavior. This study aimed to identify the brain area where tDCS has the greatest effect on vocal quality, vocal range, neuromotor functioning of the larynx, and self-reported vocal effort in vocally healthy individuals. Sixteen adults, non-singers, with a mean age of 22.5 (±1.9) years and no vocal symptoms or brain dysfunction, participated in this double-blinded randomized crossover clinical trial. The participants underwent four anodal tDCS session (20 minutes;2 mA) in targeting different areas—cerebellum, primary motor cortex (M1), primary somatosensory cortex (S1), and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC)—with a 7-day washout period between sessions. Volunteers were evaluated for vocal performance before and after each tDCS session. Voice recordings were taken to assess the following vocal parameters: vocal range profile (VRP) at weak and strong intensities;vocal quality (jitter, shimmer, irregularity, glottal-to-noise excitation ratio, and dysphonia acoustic index) at weak, habitual, and strong intensities;laryngeal diadochokinesis, and self-reported vocal effort using the adapted Borg CR10 scale. M1 stimulation enhanced the VRP by increasing maximum intensity and improving vocal quality, particularly at habitual and strong intensities. Similarly, S1 stimulation improved vocal quality at strong intensities but reduced the VRP by lowering the maximum fundamental frequency. Cerebellum stimulation enhanced neuromuscular control and coordination of the larynx without affecting vocal quality. Additionally, self-reported vocal effort decreased across all stimulated areas following tDCS. Our findings indicate that tDCS applied to different brain areas produces varying effects on vocal parameters. © 2024 The Voice Foundation

Açaí, Euterpe oleracea Mart. is rich in several phytochemical substances with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor activities. The açaí seed is a waste product, being little used in the economy, being relevant to study the antitumor properties of this by-product. This study aims to analyze the effects of hydroalcoholic açaí seed extract in Ehrlich mice model in preventive and treatment schemes. The animals were treated with different concentrations of the extract (100, 300 and 1000 mg/kg) by gavage in preventive (30 days before tumor induction) and intervention (15 days after tumor induction) regimens. In in vivo experiments, the use of the extract at a dose of 1000 mg/kg in preventive regimens reduced tumor volume, decreased tumor weight, maintained the weight of treated animals and induced an immunomodulatory response, with an increase in TNF-α. The treatment also increased the area of tumor necrosis when compared to the control. Our results suggest the antitumor potential of açaí seed extract in in vivo models of breast cancer, contributing to obtain an active drug from a known natural product. In addition, the use of açaí seed residue will contribute to the local economy and sustainability. © 2023

Resistance training is an excellent intervention for obtaining different physiological improvements in the elderly. The present study aimed to investigate the chronic effects of different neuromuscular training on cardiovascular, cardiorespiratory, and walking performance responses in the elderly. One hundred five people (64 women and 41 men) participated in the study, physically active, all over 60 years old. They were randomized to compose three groups: Strength Group, (n = 35), Resistance Group (n = 35), and Control Group, (n = 35). Both experimental groups (Strength Group and resistance group) performed four weeks of adaptation and 12 weeks of specific training. The Strength Group and the resistance group did four weeks adaptation phase and 12 weeks intervention load with 70-85% and 50-70%, respectively. The same exercise program was used in the experimental groups, using the alternating method by segment with the bench press, squat, one-sided curved stroke, leg extension, biceps curl, knee flexion, Triceps forehead. Both strength and resistance groups carried out two weekly sessions with an interval of at least 48 and a maximum of 72 hours. A pre and post-evaluation of resting heart rate (HR), blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), rate pressure product (RPP) was performed, and oxygen absorption (VO2max) and walking performance were estimated through the 1600 test meters. In systolic pressure, there was an improvement for the Strength Group (p=0.007) but not for the resistance group (p=0.172) and control group (p=0.999). The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii as an opportunistic pathogen in wound infections raises significant concerns due to its antibiotic resistance and biofilm-mediated antibiotic tolerance. This underscores the urgent need to explore an alternative approach to effectively managing wound infections caused by MDR A. baumannii . In this study, combining subinhibitory concentrations of curcumin (25 µg/ml) or chitosan (156 µg/ml) with photodynamic therapy-PDT (10 J/cm 2 ) resulted in a significant reduction of planktonic viabilities and biofilm biovolume of MDR A. baumannii clinical isolates in vitro . In murine A. baumannii- associated wound infection, a combination of curcumin (25 µg/ml) or chitosan (156 µg/ml) with PDT (10 J/cm 2 ) resulted in complete bacterial eradication with wound healing at Day 15 of post-treatments with these combination therapies. Our study demonstrated that combining curcumin or chitosan with PDT at their subinhibitory concentrations represents a promising alternative strategy as localized therapy for effectively managing A. baumannii -associated wound infection.

Aims:The aims of the present study were to monitor electromyography activity in the masticatory muscles of individuals with both hemiparesis and Temporomandibular Disorders and determine possible correlations with gender and time elapsed since the stroke ***:A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted involving 50 individuals. Group 1 comprises individuals with complete hemiparesis and Group 2 comprises individuals with incomplete hemiparesis. The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders was used for the diagnosis of Temporomandibular Disorders. To capture the electromyography signal of the masseter and anterior temporal muscles bilateral was used a four-channel acquisition ***:There was a statistically significant difference between the right and left side was found in the electromyography signal to the jaw at rest, both in the group with complete hemiparesis and the group with incomplete hemiparesis. No statistically significant differences in the EMG signal were found between the right and left sides during isometric contraction or isotonic ***:The hemiparesis alters electromyographic signals in the masticatory muscles with the mandible at rest. Negative correlations were found between the electromyography signal and both the male gender and time elapsed since the stroke, demonstrating less electrical activity with a longer time since the neurological event, especially among men.

The inflorescence of Musa paradisiaca, known as "banana heart"is a structure that includes flowers and bracts of banana, commonly used as food source worldwide. The aims of this study were (1) to determine the mineral components of Musa paradisiaca and (2) to compare the obtained results with previously reported data of Recommendation Dietary Allowances (RDAs) and edible plant permissible limits set by FAO/WHO. The samples were digested using microwave-assisted equipment, while elemental contents were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP OES). Metal (Mg, Ca, Cr, Ni, Cu, Fe, and Zn) and nonmetal (S and P) contents were detected. According to RDA, the inflorescences could be excellent sources of Mg, P, Cr, Cu, Zn, and Fe for females, males, and pregnant women, all age 31-50 y, as well as children (4-8 y). Bracts are good source of Zn for male and pregnant women and good source of Fe for children. All the samples contained considerable amounts of Mg, Ca, P, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Fe, which were quite low to induce deleterious effects (UL). FAO/WHO limits for edible plants have not yet been established for S, P, Mg, and Ca, but Ni and Zn are below of those limit values. However, Cr and Cu concentrations are higher than the values established for edible plants and may pose a threat to human health. Farmers should be encouraged by government agencies, not only for sustainability of production but also to ensure the storage and trade of banana tree inflorescence. © 2020 Rafaela Henriques Rosa et al.

The Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system plays a crucial role in clinical planning, offering valuable insights for effectively managing hepatocellular carcinoma. Accurate prediction of BCLC stages can significantly ease the workload on radiologists. However, few datasets are explicitly designed for discerning BCLC stages. Despite the common practice of appending BCLC labels to clinical data within datasets, the inherent imbalance in BCLC distribution is further amplified by the diverse purposes for which datasets are curated. In this study, we aim to develop a BCLC staging system using the advanced Swin Transformer model. Additionally, we explore the integration of two datasets, each originally intended for separate objectives, highlighting the critical challenge of preserving class distribution in practical study designs. This exploration is pivotal for ensuring the applicability of our developed staging system in the designed clinical settings. Our resulting BCLC staging system demonstrates an accuracy of 55.81% (±7.8%), contributing to advancing medical image-based research for predicting BCLC stages.

Deep learning has revolutionized medical imaging, offering advanced methods for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. The BCLC staging system is crucial for staging Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), a high-mortality cancer. An automated BCLC staging system could significantly enhance diagnosis and treatment planning efficiency. However, we found that BCLC staging, which is directly related to the size and number of liver tumors, aligns well with the principles of the Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) framework. To effectively achieve this, we proposed a new preprocessing technique called Masked Cropping and Padding(MCP), which addresses the variability in liver volumes and ensures consistent input sizes. This technique preserves the structural integrity of the liver, facilitating more effective learning. Furthermore, we introduced Re ViT, a novel hybrid model that integrates the local feature extraction capabilities of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) with the global context modeling of Vision Transformers (ViTs). Re ViT leverages the strengths of both architectures within the MIL framework, enabling a robust and accurate approach for BCLC staging. We will further explore the trade-off between performance and interpretability by employing TopK Pooling strategies, as our model focuses on the most informative instances within each bag.

Workflow has become a standard for many scientific applications that are characterized by a collection of processing elements. Particularly, a pipeline application is a type of workflow that receives a set of tasks, which must pass through all processing elements in a linear fashion. However, the strategy of using a fixed number of resources can cause under- or over-provisioning situations, besides not fitting irregular demands. In this context, our idea is to deploy the pipeline application in the cloud, so executing it with a feature that differentiates cloud from other distributed systems: resource elasticity. Thus, we propose Pipel: a reactive elasticity model that uses lower and upper load thresholds and the CPU metric to on-the-fly select the most appropriated number of compute nodes for each stage along the pipeline execution. The results were promising, presenting an average gain of 38% in the application time when comparing non-elastic and elastic executions. © 2019 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Neonatal jaundice is a common health problem seen in 60–80% of newborns. Electronic search in nine databases was done for randomized controlled trials. Twenty seven studies were eligible for quantitative analysis. For neonates requiring phototherapy (PT), in 3rd and 4th days of life, massage and phototherapy was more effective in reducing bilirubin, compared to phototherapy alone. However, this effect became insignificant in the 14th day of life. In contrast, massage with enema and phototherapy significantly reduced bilirubin at the age of 14 days. For neonates not requiring PT, the best reduction was observed with the acupressure massage between the 3rd and 7th days. In the 14th day, massage combined with bathing appears to be the most effective. Massage therapy could be an effective adjuvant to PT in order to reduce the PT duration. However, it did not reduce the requirement for PT. © 2019 Neonatal Nurses Association
