Evaluation of New Jersey's sex offender treatment program at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center: Preliminary results

This study examined 10-year sexual and non-sexual offense recidivism for sex offenders released from New Jersey's general prison system and from the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center (ADTC), New Jersey's correctional facility and treatment center for repetitive-compulsive sexual offenders. The study found that sexual offenders released from the ADTC had significantly lower rates of committing both non-sexual offenses and any offense, compared with the general prison population of sex offenders. For both groups, the 10-year sexual offense reconviction rates were relatively low, 8.6% for the ADTC offenders and 12.7% for the general prison sexual offenders, while reoffense rates for non-sexual offenses were 25.8% and 44.1% for ADTC and general prison sex offenders, respectively.

Background: Obesity and its associated diseases in the 21^st century has led to new public policies with international commitments. Objective: The objective of this review was to examine public initiatives and policies to tackle obesity in Brazil and Portugal over the past two decades, identifying frameworks, guidelines and strategic actions. Methods: Official documents Brazilian and Portuguese public health policies were analyzed for international guidelines from 1999 to 2019. The documents were organized and analyzed by date. Additionally, they were evaluated for frameworks and actions proposed for individuals, communities, and the population across all levels of healthcare. Conclusion: This study shows that Portugal and Brazil have taken different paths when it comes to the creation and implementation of their strategies to manage obesity. In Brazil, actions aimed at promoting healthy eating have been introduced to children and are implemented by many government agencies. Portugal, on the other hand, has provided greater access to individualized healthcare services and has involved different sectors in addressing these issues. © 2021 da Graça da Costa et al.

Neuroinflammation is a common trigger of multiple neuropsychiatric disorders. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration in widely used to induce systemic and neural inflammation in various in vivo animal models. Complementing rodent studies, the zebrafish emerges as a powerful model organism for studying complex neurobehavioral consequences of neuroinflammation. Here, adult fish received intracerebroventricularly administered LPS and were assessed behaviorally in the novel tank, zebrafish tail immobilization (ZTI) and Y-maze tests for locomotor, affective and cognitive responses. We also performed neurochemical and neurogenomic profiling of zebrafish to assess their brain monoamine levels and the expression of selected cytokine-related genes. Overall, LPS-treated zebrafish showed hypolocomotion in the novel tank test, reduced spontaneous alternation in the Y-maze and higher ZTI test immobility, suggesting affective and cognitive deficits, accompanied by elevated serotonin turnover and upregulated pro-inflammatory ( Il1b, tnf ) and anti-inflammatory ( il10 ) cytokine genes. Collectively, these findings parallel rich rodent evidence of central LPS effects, and support zebrafish as a valuable model system for probing the interplay between neuroinflammation and psychiatric disorders, with a specific focus on evolutionarily conserved, shared mechanisms of CNS pathogenesis.

Toward the end of life, older cancer patients with terminal illness often prefer palliative over life-extending care and also prefer to die at home. However, care planning is not always consistent with patients’ preferences. In this article, discussions will be centered on patients’ autonomy of exercising control over their bodies within the current biotechnoscientific paradigm and in the context of population aging. More specifically, the biopolitical strategy of medicine in the context of hospital-centered health care control and of the frail condition of cancer patients in the intensive care unit will be considered in terms of the bioethics of protection. This ethical principle may provide support to these patients by ensuring that they receive appropriate treatment of pain and other physical, psychosocial, and spiritual problems in an attempt to focus attention on the values of the ill person rather than limiting it to the illness. © 2017, © The Author(s) 2017.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most prevalent subtype of lung cancer, often diagnosed at an advanced stage with poor prognosis and limited treatment options. The Desmoglein (DSG) family plays a crucial role in maintaining cell adhesion and tissue integrity. Upregulation of DSG proteins has been implicated in tumorigenesis, invasion, and metastasis across various cancers. However, the role of DSG in lung cancer, particularly as a biomarker influencing the efficacy of anti-cancer drugs, remains unclear. In this study, DSG2 was significantly overexpressed in LUAD tumor tissues and correlated with poor prognosis, as revealed by TCGA database analysis. Additionally, analyses of single-cell sequencing, KEGG, and GSEA multi-omics databases demonstrated that DSG2 modulates multiple oncogenic pathways, particularly the apoptosis pathway, with a strong positive correlation between DSG2 and PTX3 expression. In vitro experiments showed that DSG2 knockdown enhanced gemcitabine-induced apoptosis by downregulating the NFκB/STAT3/PTX3 signaling axis. Furthermore, adding recombinant PTX3 protein in DSG2 knockdown cells restored STAT3 activation, reducing gemcitabine efficacy, indicating that DSG2 contributes to gemcitabine resistance through PTX3-mediated mechanisms. This study identifies DSG2 as a critical mediator of gemcitabine resistance in LUAD through its regulation of the PTX3/NFκB/STAT3 pathway. The findings suggest that targeting DSG2 could enhance the therapeutic efficacy of gemcitabine in LUAD patients, offering a novel therapeutic strategy and biomarker for overcoming chemoresistance in this aggressive cancer subtype. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

Recent decades have seen increasing calls for implementing Indigenous Knowledges (IK) in natural resource management (NRM). However, efforts have been limited by the cultural incommensurabilities between (1) NRM institutions, which are rooted in worldviews that prioritize extraction for dominant cultures and assume dominance over nature and (2) Indigenous worldviews that prioritize kincentric reciprocity with the environment. This manuscript addresses how transforming NRM institutions enables management to better support Indigenous Knowledges and lifeways. This manuscript examines incommensurabilities between NRM institutional cultures and Indigenous cultures, with the value and lifeway of reciprocity as the focal point. Through synthesizing interdisciplinary scholarship and examples from author experiences, we explore how NRM institutions in North America can transform to honour and facilitate reciprocity, especially within efforts to implement IK and support Indigenous lifeways. NRM institutions are cultural products, and in North America were born of colonial histories and cultural roots connected to modern governance and power dynamics. These cultural foundations led to NRM approaches that prioritize maximizing economic growth while guarding against overexploitation. Kincentric reciprocal relations with the environment often emphasize interdependency with more-than-human kin, place-based holistic Knowledges grounded in cultural practices and communal responsibility to cultivate social-ecological abundance for present and future generations. Incommensurabilities between NRM institutional cultures and Indigenous cultures impede efforts to implement IK and support Indigenous lifeways as: (1) rigid institutional structures do not account for Indigenous worldviews and values but instead attempt to fit IK within dominant paradigms; (2) the siloing of NRM leads to the piecemealing and invalidation of IK at the expense of Knowledge Holders and (3) ineffective public eng

Derivatives (halogen, nitro and amino) of 8-hydroxyquinoline with highly potent antimicrobial and antioxidant activities

8-Hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) compounds have been reported to possess diverse bioactivities. In recent years, drug repositioning has gained considerable attention in drug discovery and development. Herein, 8HQ (1) and its derivatives (2-9) bearing various substituents (amino, nitro, cyano and halogen) were investigated for their antimicrobial against 27 microorganisms (agar dilution method) and antioxidant (DPPH method) activities. The parent 8HQ (1) exerted a highly potent antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria including diploid fungi and yeast with MIC values in the range of 3.44-13.78 μM. Moreover, the halogenated 8HQ, especially 7-bromo-8HQ (4) and clioquinol (6), displayed a high antigrowth activity against Gram-negative bacteria compared with the parent compound (1). Apparently, the derivatives with a relatively high safely index, e.g., nitroxoline (2), exhibited strong antibacterial activity against Aeromonas hydrophila (MIC=5.26 μM) and selectively inhibited the growth of P. aeruginosa with the MIC value of 84.14 μM;cloxyquin (3) showed a strong activity against L. monocytogenes and P. shigelloides with MIC values of 5.57 and 11.14 μM, respectively. Most compounds displayed an antioxidant activity. Specifically, 5-amino-8HQ (8) was shown to be the most potent antioxidant (IC₅₀=8.70 μM) compared with the positive control (α-tocopherol) with IC₅₀ of 13.47 μM. The findings reveal that 8HQ derivatives are potential candidates to be further developed as antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. © 2016 The Authors.
