Integrated marketing communication in hospitality SMEs: analyzing the antecedent role of innovation orientation and the effect on market performance

Integrated marketing communication (IMC) process is considered a way to develop a long-term relationship with the organization’s stakeholders and increase its results, besides that, there is still not a clear understanding of factors that have a positive influence on it. As a strategic process that involves the whole organization we believe that strategic orientations can either act as drivers or impediments of this process, specifically, we test the influence of Innovation Orientation (OI) in that process and find out that it be a driver of such process, we also confirm the positive influence of the IMC process in the marketing performance. To do so, we conducted a survey with 250 SMEs of the hospitality sector. Our study contributes both to the IMC and OI literature once that it provides evidence that IMC can be an important tool to help managers to increase marketing performance and that OI can influence process beyond those directly related to innovations, by doing so we broaden the scope of IO and increase the importance of IMC showing that managers can influence their company’s culture towards innovativeness to improve their communication process and in this way achieve greater marketing results. © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

How do reward personalization options influence the public’s willingness to participate in innovation projects? Insights from crowdfunding in Industry 5.0

Purpose: This study aims to examine the influence of reward personalization on financing outcomes in the Industry 5.0 era, where reward-based crowdfunding meets the personalized needs of individuals. Design/methodology/approach: The study utilizes a corpus of 218,822 crowdfunding projects and 1,276,786 reward options on Kickstarter to investigate the effect of reward personalization on investors’ willingness to participate in crowdfunding. The research draws on expectancy theory and employs quantitative and qualitative approaches to measure reward personalization. Quantitatively, the number of reward options is calculated by frequency;whereas text-mining techniques are implemented qualitatively to extract novelty, which serves as a proxy for innovation. Findings: Findings indicate that reward personalization has an inverted U-shaped effect on investors’ willingness to participate, with investors in life-related projects having a stronger need for reward personalization than those interested in art-related projects. The pledge goal and reward text readability have an inverted U-shaped moderating effect on reward personalization from the perspective of reward expectations and reward instrumentality. Originality/value: This study refines the application of expectancy theory to online financing, providing theoretical insight and practical guidance for crowdfunding platforms and financiers seeking to promote sustainable development through personalized innovation. © 2024, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Effects of sentiment discreteness on MOOCs’ disconfirmation: text analytics in online reviews

In Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), online reviews serve as a basis for teachers to improve their courses. The disconfirmation effect of online reviews, i.e. the inconsistency between the level of attention paid to a course factor and the actual weight of that factor’s influence on learner satisfaction, leads to erroneous judgments by teachers. Based on the two-factor theory of emotion, 4,070 courses and 165,705 online reviews are adopted as a corpus to identify the effect of learner sentiment on the disconfirmation effect. The empirical results show that there is a significant disconfirmation effect for negative reviews, but not for positive ones. A fine-grained analysis on negative sentiment finds that reviews containing more sadness and anger sentiments have a stronger disconfirmation effect. A comparison of course types reveals that the disconfirmation effect is stronger for instrument-based courses than that for knowledge-based and practice-based ones. In addition, negative word-of-mouth weakens the disconfirmation effect of sadness and anger reviews and enhances the disconfirmation effect of positive reviews. Further, learner’s reputation weakens the disconfirmation effect of sadness reviews and enhances the disconfirmation effect of positive and anger reviews. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

This paper evaluates the performances and dynamics of productivity changes of 38 airlines from different regions of the world between 2015 and 2019, assessing the effects of business model, alliance membership, the economic development level of the home country, and size on the operational performance of the airlines. In this regard, first, constant returns to scale (CRS) and variable returns to scale (VRS) input-oriented data envelopment analysis (DEA) models with three inputs and two outputs are implemented. The input-oriented CRS model super-efficiency DEA is also used to discriminate between efficient airlines. The Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) estimates efficiency dynamics across time. Further, the determinants of operational efficiencies are assessed by applying Mann-Whitney rank-sum tests. The analysis results show that most airlines suffer from scale inefficiency. MPI signifies productivity deterioration in airlines’ performance. It is found that low-cost carriers (LCC) have performed better than full-service carriers and alliance member airlines are less efficient than non-member airlines. Additionally, developed country airlines show better performance than their emerging country counterparts. Lastly, the size of airlines measured in available seat kilometers (ASK) is found to have no statistically significant effect on performance. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Positional decisions are influenced by context. We argue here that the peculiarities of such contexts boil down to choices in the domain of gains versus choices in the domain of losses. A total of 420 people completed one gain domain questionnaire and 445 completed one loss domain questionnaire. The survey evidence suggests that positional choices in the domain of gains shift to nonpositional choices in the domain of losses. This implies that losses are personal rather than positional. The literature identifies several contexts and the contribution of this paper is to condense them all into a single framework. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

Technology-driven consumption: digital natives and immigrants in the context of multifunctional convergence

This study seeks to identify the characteristics of in-car technological devices featuring convergence, such as multimedia systems, that influence the intention of digital immigrant and digital native consumers to use current vehicles. Drawing on the concepts of ease of use, hedonic and utilitarian characteristics, social values, and identification with self, the perceptions of values in the two groups of users are analyzed. This study adopts a qualitative approach, using netnography, content analysis, and semi-structured interviews. The results indicate that the influence of the digital age is present in both consumer profiles. Although digital immigrants have more difficulties in learning, they strive to understand digital experiences and demonstrate a high sense of responsibility in terms of traffic safety. Although the lives of digital natives are based on digital knowledge, they are less concerned than are digital immigrants with the safety precautions that must be adopted when using technologies embedded in cars. © 2019 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Disentangling the Difficulties in Cross-National Practice Adoption: The Role of Perception of Institutional Logics

Purpose – This paper aims to theorize how importation, a form of international practice transfers in which firms adopt practices developed by foreign organizations, is fundamentally problematic and thus gives rise to distinctive difficulty. Design/methodology/approach – Conceptual study. Findings – Due to importation’s nature as cross-national and inter-organizational transfer, adopters tend to lack perception of cultural misfit between the foreign practice and the adopting organization. We develop a framework for the consequences of such bounded perception. Research limitations/implications – We limit scope of our framework to the case where cultural misfit involves conflicting institutional logics. Practical implications/Social implications – This paper proposes that adopters’ initial perceptions of logics underlying the foreign practice and the adopting organization can result in fundamental problems and affect subsequent organizational learning and adaptation. Originality/value – This study provides contextual as well as cognitive analysis of source of difficulty in cross-national practice adoption. © 2022, Kung-Hwa Management Foundation. Health education aims to change unhealthy behaviors and promote population health. However, limited teaching time and standardized materials pose challenges, prompting elementary school teachers to explore technology-enhanced teaching strategies. To cultivate proper health attitudes and behaviors among elementary school students, many researchers have widely used e-books to teach health education-related courses. Many studies have proven interactive e-books to be effective in aiding both teaching and learning. However, despite the continuous innovation of e-books in educational applications, the long-term effects of e-books have yet to be investigated, since learning memory only responds to short-term memory effects. Therefore, this study attempts to develop a sequential multi-level prompting strategy for e-book learning in a mobile learning environment for tablet computers. Students from two primary school classes were recruited for the empirical study. The experimental group used a sequential multi-level, prompting-based e-book to learn, while the control group used a conventional e-book learning approach. According to the study’s results, the proposed learning strategies were found to improve the learning achievement of primary school students for cardiovascular disease, guide students in building knowledge, develop thinking and problem-solving skills, and help students transform their learning from short-term to long-term memory through post-testing of problem-solving delays. It is certain that sequential multi-level prompting strategies can help younger learners better understand and remember learning content and apply the knowledge they have gained to develop correct health attitudes. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

Building a case for communities of practice as drivers of innovative teaching in English medium instruction context

While innovative teaching behavior is a promising type of competency that can equip faculty members with the necessary capability to adapt their teaching to fit their specific teaching context, how to achieve it remains underexplored. This study explored ten faculty members’ perceptions of the kind of values pertaining to innovative teaching behavior in English medium instruction (EMI) settings created by the co-participatory learning opportunities provided by their EMI community of practice (CoP). Using semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis underpinned by the value creation framework, we identified three themes illustrating faculty members’ conceptualization of (1) prospects of value creation associated with membership in the community, (2) attained values, created through participating in the CoP, and (3) aspirational values, needed to sustain the community. Expectations of gains in professional development and peer support motivated members to join the community, and the values attained through co-participatory learning were underpinned by a sense of camaraderie and psychological safety that the community offered its members. Language-related support for developing English competencies and tailored support towards EMI issues constituted the main aspirational values members sought to gain. Finally, organizational support was highlighted as a crucial ingredient for sustaining the community’s activities. The implications of the results with respect to sustainable development of a faculty member’s innovative instructional practices are discussed.
