Research into mechanically interlocked luminescent molecules (MILMs), which is the overlapping of mechanically interlocked molecules and luminescent molecules, has intensified over the past few decades. These studies have tapped into and exploited the benefits of mechanically interlocked structures to achieve outstanding and stimulus-responsive optical characteristics, resulting in the synthesis of new types of luminescent systems and exploring their potential uses in different applications. This review describes the salient attributes of MILMs and showcases some of the latest advancements in this field of research.

Kombucha tea is a fermented tea that produced by acetic acid bacteria and yeast. In this study, the kombucha tea from white, green and black tea was studied for its microbial composition, chemical profile, and biological activities during 15-day fermentation period. HPLC analysis revealed key organic acids, including acetic, gluconic, and glucuronic acids in kombucha tea. In this study, white tea kombucha showed the highest glucuronic acid content. Green tea kombucha demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity by ABTS and FRAP assays. Moreover, white tea kombucha exhibited the strongest DPPH scavenging activity and high phenolic content. Additionally, kombucha tea could inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, including Escherichia coli, E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, and Vibrio cholerae. Furthermore, green tea kombucha significantly inhibited nitric oxide production on LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells and demonstrated the strongest anti-inflammatory effect. These findings highlight a potential of kombucha tea as a functional beverage with antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Coastal areas are very dynamic and fragile environment, demanding for policies to preserve these areas as materialized in the Resilient Coastal Development program (PKPT) by the Indonesian government. Amongst the targeted area was Timbulsloko Village in Sayung District, Demak Regency, which coastal areas is severely damaged by erosion. This article analyzed the development of the Coastal Community Group (CCG) related to the PKPT program in Timbulsloko village, especially in how the group is empowered to increase the community's resilient in facing the disaster. This study, applied an analytical descriptive method, used the development of the CCG as phenomenon. Primary data was collected through observation and in-depth interviews with stakeholders, accompanying the secondary data. The result shows that the PKPT funding was mostly spent on infrastructure development and used for project management, not for optimizing local economic empowerment. After the completion of the PKPT, there are no actions or following programs to keep the physical results constructed by the CCG. Accordingly, the orientation towards the CCG building capacity for Timbulsloko community's ecological resilience had not been optimally implemented. This study recommended a "putting the last first" policy approach to preparing the local community. The government must play a stronger role in encouraging a self-help local group for strong human development. © 2018 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

Streptococcus iniae (S. iniae) has become an important aquatic pathogen to cause serious streptococcosis outbreaks in cultured fish species, thus resulting in great economic losses in the worldwide aquaculture industry. Although vaccination has been so far an effective strategy to alleviate the threats of streptococcosis, antigenic variations displayed by different strains/isolates of S. iniae have brought about a severe challenge in the vaccine development. In the present study, three local S. iniae isolates, MML SI-007, MML SI-018 and MML SI-148, were first evaluated for their virulence in tilapia. Proteomics was then performed to analyze protein profiles between the highly virulent isolate (MML SI-007) and lowly virulent isolate (MML SI-018) in order to identify important virulence factors/antigens shared by different isolates. After proteomics, eleven proteins that displayed more than four times the differences in expression between MML SI-007 and MML SI-018 were identified. Two proteins, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), were selected to be vaccine candidates for respectively cloning their genes and expressing their recombinant proteins, rGAPDH and rSOD. After peritoneal vaccination in tilapia, mixed recombinant proteins (rGAPDH + rSOD) elicited significantly higher serum titers and lymphocyte proliferation than individual recombinant proteins (rGAPDH or rSOD). In addition, maximum production of IL-6 in the head kidney was detected in fish peritoneally vaccinated with mixed recombinant proteins. More importantly, 84% (21/25) of tilapia peritoneally vaccinated with mixed recombinant proteins survived at least four weeks after a lethal peritoneal challenge of heterologous S. iniae (MML SI-148). Citizenship, Compassion, the Arts: People Living with Mental Illness Need a Caring Community

Furthering social inclusion for marginalised members of society demands advocacy efforts focussed on holistic citizenship. Harnessing compassion, the arts can activate four component elements: narratives, actual stories and voices of members of a society;encounters, opportunities for dialogue among members of a society;reflection, values clarification and self-awareness and community, spaces that allow for creative engagement. This theoretical framework is demonstrated in an 18-month campaign designed to promote social inclusion by decreasing stigma and increasing public awareness of people living with mental illness in Hong Kong. The programme utilised an art exhibition created by people living with mental illness, guided relational viewing art-making workshops for the general public, and collaborative art-making opportunities. Integrating compassion and the arts into the citizenship framework provided participants with opportunities to engage with one another, clarify misconceptions and arrive at meaningful social policy programmatic initiatives. © 2018 Council for Social Development.

Background: We aimed to develop and validate multimodal models integrating computed tomography (CT) images, text and tabular clinical data to predict poor functional outcomes and in-hospital mortality in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). These models were designed to assist non-specialists in emergency settings with limited access to stroke specialists. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 527 patients with ICH admitted to a Japanese tertiary hospital between April 2019 and February 2022 was conducted. Deep learning techniques were used to extract features from three-dimensional CT images and unstructured data, which were then combined with tabular data to develop an L1-regularized logistic regression model to predict poor functional outcomes (modified Rankin scale score 3–6) and in-hospital mortality. The model's performance was evaluated by assessing discrimination metrics, calibration plots, and decision curve analysis (DCA) using temporal validation data. Results: The multimodal model utilizing both imaging and text data, such as medical interviews, exhibited the highest performance in predicting poor functional outcomes. In contrast, the model that combined imaging with tabular data, including physiological and laboratory results, demonstrated the best predictive performance for in-hospital mortality. These models exhibited high discriminative performance, with areas under the receiver operating curve (AUROCs) of 0.86 (95% CI: 0.79–0.92) and 0.91 (95% CI: 0.84–0.96) for poor functional outcomes and in-hospital mortality, respectively. Calibration was satisfactory for predicting poor functional outcomes, but requires refinement for mortality prediction. The models performed similar to or better than conventional risk scores, and DCA curves supported their clinical utility. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness, affecting 200 million people worldwide. To identify genes that could be targeted for treatment, we created a molecular atlas at different stages of AMD. Our resource is comprised of RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and DNA methylation microarrays from bulk macular retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)/choroid of clinically phenotyped normal and AMD donor eyes (n = 85), single-nucleus RNA-seq (164,399 cells), and single-nucleus assay for transposase-accessible chromatin (ATAC)-seq (125,822 cells) from the retina, RPE, and choroid of 6 AMD and 7 control donors. We identified 23 genome-wide significant loci differentially methylated in AMD, over 1,000 differentially expressed genes across different disease stages, and an AMD Müller state distinct from normal or gliosis. Chromatin accessibility peaks in genome-wide association study (GWAS) loci revealed putative causal genes for AMD, including HTRA1 and C6orf223. Our systems biology approach uncovered molecular mechanisms underlying AMD, including regulators of WNT signaling, FRZB and TLE2, as mechanistic players in disease. © 2023 The Authors

Neighborhood effects on integrative organizational practices in five global cities

Organizational practices, such as interacting with and advocating for constituents or engaging in event hosting and collaboration, are critical to integration—creating connections across lines of difference. However, these practices are unevenly distributed across neighborhoods and shaped by neighborhood characteristics. Here, connecting organizational and neighborhood-level data, this study explores how neighborhood affluence (income) and heterogeneity (migrant population share) affect the integrative practices among civil society organizations. Using unique survey data from five global cities, we analyze the organizational practices of 863 civil society organizations in 536 neighborhoods. We find that social integration practices—connecting people to each other—are more prevalent in poorer neighborhoods. Conversely, systemic integration practices—connecting people and organizations to other organizations in the ecosystem—are more common in heterogeneous neighborhoods, especially when they are affluent. These findings shed light on the role of organizations in promoting social cohesion and economic development as well as disparities in integrative practices among neighborhoods.

Extant public administration network literature tend to conceptualize and measure relationships in networks based on the premise that the nodes and ties in networks lie on a single-level horizontal structure. The purpose of the current study is to suggest that networks are inevitably multi-level and multi-dimension structures and propose a multi-level multi-dimension network model (MLMD). More specifically, network relationships such as within-level, inter-level, and inter-sector are offered to depict the multi-layered and multi-sectoral nature of the network relationships among the government and non-government actors. For empirical analysis, the current study constructs a hypothetical network to describe MLMD. © 2017, Springer Science+Business Media New York.
