The Superconducting Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center, a DOE National Quantum Information science Research Center, has conducted a comprehensive and coordinated study using superconducting transmon qubit chips with known performance metrics to identify the underlying materials-level sources of device-to-device performance variation. Following qubit coherence measurements, these qubits of varying base superconducting metals and substrates have been examined with various nondestructive and invasive material characterization techniques at Northwestern University, Ames National Laboratory, and Fermilab as part of a blind study. We find trends in variations of the depth of the etched substrate trench, the thickness of the surface oxide, and the geometry of the sidewall, which when combined, lead to correlations with the T1 lifetime across different devices. In addition, we provide a list of features that varied from device to device, for which the impact on performance requires further studies. Finally, we identify two low-temperature characterization techniques that may potentially serve as proxy tools for qubit measurements. These insights provide materials-oriented solutions to not only reduce performance variations across neighboring devices, but also to engineer and fabricate devices with optimal geometries to achieve performance metrics beyond the state-of-the-art values. © 2025, CC BY.

In distributed simulation, the purpose of multi-resolution methods is to allow simulation integration getting consis- tent views of different resolutions. In these methods, chal- lenges in the treatment of aggregation and disaggregation can be found, such as synchronization of events and objects, and data reliability when occurs a change of resolu- tion. Doctrines are the basis for operations involving different resources (human and material) with different roles to succeed in operation, and multi-resolution in distributed simulation can take advantage of this factor to ensure the reliability of aggregation and disaggregation processes. The aim of this paper is to propose a new strategy for treatment of multi-resolution, which builds converting rules from doctrine dynamic rules. The multi-resolution converter uses dynamic rules to describe aspects of the doctrine in the ag- gregation and disaggregation processes, increasing the reliability of multi-resolution distributed simulations. This strat- egy was implemented on a High Level Architecture (HLA) federation with virtual and constructive Commercial Off- The-Shelf (COTS) simulators. The experiments showed the exibility of this strategy on managing different doctrines. © 2017 ACM.

Inter-organizational Global Software Development (GSD) has become a common reality for many projects. It is well established that distance makes difficult to interact and to cooperate effectively. Scrum, a consolidated Agile methodology, emphasizes communication, reduces coordination and control overhead and has been increasingly used in a distributed fashion. Successfully planning and managing the combined use of GSD and Scrum is a complex task and requires carefully planning. Despite the importance and complexity of this type of problem, there seems to be a lack of reports, in the literature, of models that could support managers dealing with these decision contexts. This paper presents a multi-criteria decision model for planning and fine-tuning such project plans. This model was developed using cognitive mapping and MACBETH [1]. The application of the model is demonstrated, followed by conclusion and future work. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

Distributed Software Development (DSD) projects have become a common reality for many organizations. Scrum is a consolidated Agile methodology and has been increasingly used in a distributed fashion. As distance makes difficult to interact and to cooperate effectively, it is paramount to use methodologies like Scrum that emphasizes communication, reduces coordination and control overhead. Successfully planning and managing the combined use of DSD and Scrum is a complex task and requires carefully planning. Despite the importance and complexity of this type of problem, there seems to be a lack of reports, in the literature, of models that could support managers dealing with such decision context. This paper applies a multi-criteria decision model on the choice of DSD Scrum project plans that have a better chance of success. The model, presented in [1], was developed using cognitive mapping and MACBETH[2]. The application of the model is demonstrated, followed by conclusion and future work. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

computer games continue to present challenging experimental fields for developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) models. With Case-Based Reasoning and Clustering, this work proposes novel cases and clusters-based reuse criteria for implementing card-playing agents with diversified playing skills. Using the game of Truco, a common game in South America, we detail how game actions are reused from past cases selected as query answers for given game problems. In doing so, the majority rule, the probability-based lottery, the probability of victory, and the number of points won reuse policies are used to select a cluster of cases. Then these policies are also used to select game actions from the cases within the selected cluster. Investigating the combined exploration of reuse policies, experiments of different natures evaluate the performance of implemented Truco bots disputing matches against each other. Players in these tournaments are equipped with varied policies and use case bases constructed differently. © 2023 IEEE.

Context-Aware Computing aims at making computing systems able to capture context information and to adapt to it, providing context-related services and information to users. Context is any information used to characterize in some sense a person, object, or place of interest for a given user or application. Initial definitions of context-aware computing date from twenty years ago, but until now it was not yet fully made available to end users. This paper proposes a generic model of a context manager for general-purpose operating systems, alongside with its implementation and first evaluation results. This model includes methods for building, storing, and managing contexts, and an API to make such information available to applications and users.

This paper presents a distributed data mining technique based on a multiagent environment, called SMAMDD (multiagent system for distributed data mining), which uses model integration. Model integration consists in the amalgamation of local models into a global, consistent one. In each subset, agents perform mining tasks locally and, afterwards, results are merged into a global model. In order to achieve that, agents cooperate by exchanging messages, aiming to improve the process of knowledge discover generating accurate results. The multiagent system for distributed data mining proposed in this paper has been compared with classical machine learning algorithms which are based on model integration as well, simulating a distributed environment. The results obtained show that SMAMDD can produce highly accurate data models

OMG has published an unreliable multicast specification for distributed applications developed in CORBA (UMIOP). This mechanism can be implemented based on IP Multicast, a best-effort protocol, which provides no guarantees about the message delivery. However, many fault-tolerant or groupware applications demand more restrictive agreement and ordering guarantees (for instance, reliable multicast with FIFO, causal or total ordering) from the available support for group communication. OMG has not yet provided any specification for supporting those requirements. This paper presents an important contribution towards this direction. We proposed the ReMIOP, an extension to the UMIOP/OMG protocol, for the conception of a reliable multicast mechanism in CORBA middleware. Performance measures comparing ReMIOP, UMIOP and UDP sockets for IP multicast communication are presented in order to evidence the costs for adding reliable and unreliable multicast in middleware level. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

This paper presents a trust model that aggregates multiple sources of information, such as: testimonies, context, social information, preconception, reputation, and proposes a new data structure, called Dossier. The aim is to raise the success rate that consumer agents have when contracting provider agents. To reach this objective we make two hypotheses: (i) every consumer agent is able to measure and inform the quality of a service they receive from a provider agent; (ii) the Dossier is a data structure that allows the evaluated agent himself to keep locally the history of feedbacks received without modification or omission that benefits him. The model-that uses the Dossier structure-reduces some weak points of trust models that rely on the direct interaction between provider and consumer agents (direct trust) or those that rely on testimony obtained from client agents (indirect trust). The Dossier model allows us effectively to use the agent approach to build decentralized IT solutions, where control and data-of every application encapsulated in an agent-can actually be distributed logically and physically. The comparative analysis showed that the Dossier model has a behavior equivalent to or superior to the considered models (FIRE, TRAVOS, MARSH and Central) and that such a model can make the agents more efficient in choosing their partners. The reason for this is that the reputation of a given service provider agent is based on the reputation it has among the totality of consumer agents that used its services.

OMG published a draft specification for a reliable ordered multicast inter-ORB protocol to be used by distributed applications developed in CORBA (ROMIOP). This specification was made to attend the demand of applications that needed more restrictive guarantees on reliability and ordering, since there already has a specification without these resources (UMIOP). This paper presents how ROMIOP was implemented, as well as modifications that were made on the specification to make possible to implement it according to the ETF (Extensible Transport Framework) specification. Performance measures were made comparing ROMIOP with others protocols, like UMIOP, to show its characteristics and its cost. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
