We present a model for the certification of trust in multi-agent systems based on encryption. The objective is to raise the level of efficiency that client agents have when contracting specialized service agents. We make three hypotheses: (i) client agents are able to measure and inform the quality of a service they receive from a service agent; (ii) distributed certificate control is possible because every service agent stores the certificates it receives from its client agents and, (iii) the content of a certificate can be considered safe as long as the public and private keys used to encrypt the certificate remain safe. This approach reduces some weak points of trust models that rely on the direct interaction between service and client agents (direct trust) or those that rely on testimony obtained from client agents (propagated trust). Simulation showed that encrypted certificates of trust improved the efficiency of client agents when choosing their service provider agents. The reason seems to be that the reputation of a given service provider agent is based on the reputation it has among the totality of client agents that used its services.

The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm aims to bring continuous interaction between small embedded devices and humans. The IoT has the potential to affect our daily lives and bring many benefits to society. Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWAN) is a new IoT technology that offers long distance connectivity for a massive number of devices. LPWAN is a promising solution to enable complex IoT scenarios, such as smart cities and smart healthcare. LoRa is currently one of the leading LPWAN solutions available for public use. Due to the great number of connected devices and, in some cases, sensitive data transmitted in IoT networks, security is one of the main concerns in LPWAN. In this paper, we focus on the issues of key management in LoRaWAN. We propose a secure architecture for key management based on private blockchain and smart contracts in order to increase the levels of security and availability in LoRaWAN environments. In order to show the feasibility of the proposed architecture, a working prototype was implemented using open-source tools and commodity hardware.

Organizing music activities for the elderly is another way that supports their well-being. Angklung, an Indonesian musical instrument, has been used for music activities for the elderly in Thailand with the hand signs method. Unfortunately, music activity is not widely used because the experts with the hand sign skills are few and not enough for demanding in the aging healthcare. At the same time, technologies of remote systems using the Internet of Things (IoT) have been developed to assist the elderly in supporting and improving their quality of life. This paper will introduce 'Angklung Smart Band,' an IoT-based system to support Angklung music activities for the elderly in Thailand. This work aims at setting up Angklung music activities for the elderly by using technology instead of hand signs. The system is composed of a web application, IoT devices, and Angklung musical instruments connected together via a wireless network. We did a preliminary study with the experts to improve experiences and system performance. After that, we asked the music experts to use the smart band to conduct the music activities experiment with the elderly for three days and give us feedback. The results found that the smart band could assist the Angklung music experts and help with the shortage of music expertise in aged care facilities or nursing homes. © 2022 IEEE.

Potential of intrusion during smart meter data collection is an important problem for household privacy in next-generation smart homes. There are various privacy protection methods such as hiding the real usage with renewable batteries (RBs) and encrypted communication. There are privacy threats due to the detection of the energy transfer through RBs while encryption-based methods result in high computational complexity. In this study, a novel privacy improvement mechanism is proposed based on the routing of energy through multiple smart meters among multiple houses in a neighborhood. The optimization of privacy based on uniform randomization is theoretically modeled and some heuristic solutions are presented. In this method, energy transfer is randomly distributed among multiple smart meters, real usage of a house is buffered with the RB and smart meter indices are randomly selected. In numerical simulations, privacy improvement is shown by utilizing the random selection of smart meter indices for randomizing the energy routing and the buffers of RBs. Furthermore, energy privacy (EP) metric validating the simulation results is defined. Energy routing with multiple smart meters provides a practical and low complexity privacy protection mechanism for next-generation smart grid architectures.

Social networks provide a new way of communication that still preserves our human social interaction. Due to the widespread use of mobile devices, people tend to use their smartphone or tablet as the main way to make that interaction. Furthermore, applications developed to these devices are fostering the use of contextual information, such as the location of the user. In this way, this article proposes Mingle, a model for a spontaneous social network targeted at mobile devices. In our proposal, the social network is spontaneous, i.e. involves only people that are physically present in a specific location. Besides presenting the model, we show a developed prototype using Android-based devices. We evaluated Mingle employing two strategies, a usage case and a performance evaluation. The results were encouraging and show the potential of deploying Mingle in real situations.

Protein structure prediction in three dimensions represents a fundamental challenge in Structural Bioinformatics. Leveraging problem-specific information such as fragment insertion, secondary structure, and contact maps can significantly enhance the exploration of the search space. In this study, an evolutionary algorithm is introduced, which incorporates such problem information for protein structure prediction. The proposed method employs a dynamic speciation technique alongside fragment insertion to foster population diversity. To ensure a rich variety of fragments, a fragment library is constructed using the Rosetta Quota protocol. Additionally, information from contact maps and secondary structure is integrated into two selection strategies to facilitate a more thorough exploration of the conformational search space. The results of an experimental evaluation involving 9 proteins are presented, demonstrating competitive performance compared to existing literature. Evaluation metrics include RMSD, GDT, and processing time.

We aim at dimensioning fixed broadband microwave wireless networks under unreliable channel conditions. As the transport capacity of microwave links is prone to variations due to, e.g., weather conditions, such a dimensioning requires special attention. It can be formulated as the determination of the minimum cost bandwidth assignment of the links in the network for which traffic requirements can be met with high probability, while taking into account that transport link capacities vary depending on channel conditions. The proposed optimization model represents a major step forward since we consider dynamic routing. Experimental results show that the resulting solutions can save up to 45% of the bandwidth cost compared to the case where a bandwidth over-provisioning policy is uniformly applied to all links in the network planning. Comparisons with previous work also show that we can solve much larger instances in significantly shorter computing times, with a comparable level of reliability.
