Software-Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm has decoupled data and control planes on traditional networks. In this context, a logically-centralized controller, with full knowledge on network resources and traffic loads, executes routing algorithms to identify forwarding paths, while networking resources (switches and routers) just work on packet forwarding. This work contributes by executing and characterizing a well-know distributed application, NAS parallel benchmark, atop an SDN-based data center. A comparison with different flow routing algorithms is presented, highlighting that an application can reduce its runtime when applying a multi-path routing.

Symbiotic relationships are one of several phenomena that can be observed in nature. These relationships consist of interactions between organisms and can lead to benefits or damages to those involved. In an optimization context, symbiotic relationships can be used to perform information exchange between populations of candidate solutions to a given problem. This paper presents an information exchange model inspired by symbiotic relationships and applies the model to unconstrained single-objective continuous optimization problems. The symbiotic relationships are modelled using the Pareto dominance criteria inside a computational ecosystem for optimization. The Artificial Bee Colony algorithm is used to compound the populations of the ecosystem. Four models of relationships are analyzed: slavery, competition, altruism and mutualism. Thirty unconstrained single-objective continuous benchmark functions with high number of dimensions (d = 200) are tested and obtained results compared. Results suggest that the proposed model for information exchange favors the balance between exploration and exploitation leading to better results.

This study aimed the analysis of the positional and geometric accuracy of objects in orthomosaics obtained through different unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) data processing software covering an area located within Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos - UNISINOS in São Leopoldo, RS. A total of nine ground control points (GCP) and twenty checkpoints were surveyed in order register and classify the processed orthomosaics according to the cartographic accuracy standard - Padrão de Exatidão Cartográfica (PEC). Four software was employed to process the UAV data: Pix4D mapper, Agisoft PhotoScan, Menci APS and Bentley Context Capture. The results obtained from each software were compared and identified the smallest distortions when processing with and without ground control points. The flight was executed at a height of 90m with 60% sidelap and 80% overlap using an ST800 UAV equipped with a Sony NEX-7 small format non-metric camera with 24 megapixels resolution. The software GeoPEC was used to classify the orthomosaics according to PEC. For data processed with ground control points all orthomosaics were classified “Class A” in 1/500 scale, however, only Menci APS did not present a trend line via t-student test. On the other hand, Menci APS presented the worst results without the ground control points. In processing with GCP, all orthomosaics obtained optimum results with an approximated error of 2,5 m2 about 0,03% of the area. © 2018 IEEE

The popularization increase of MMORPGs demands new technological approaches to supply users’ requirements with a lower cost of computational resources. Designing these architectures, from the network point of view, is relevant and impacts these games’ success. We analyze and identify the computational resources consumed by the architectures Rudy, Salz, and Willson, which are microservices architectures elaborated for MMORPGs. These architectures were analyzed and tested using automated clients on the architectures deployed in our private computational cloud to identify resource bottlenecks. We conclude the performance, from the point of view of response time, is related to better use of CPU, either by data storage microservices or by data processing microservices. In addition, the application of queuing systems or barriers to manage access or minimize the consumption of an internal service proved feasible, directly impacting the flow of data through the architecture.

Analysis of human mobility behavior in Smart Cities and Smart Environments: A systematic literature review and taxonomy

The analysis of human mobility behavior through computational techniques finds applications in various domains and provides valuable insights for urban planning, transportation services, and a deeper understanding of human interactions in Smart Cities and Smart Environments. In this scenario, this study presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with the following main question: How are computational techniques being used to analyse human mobility behavior in Smart Cities and Smart Environments? A total of 5989 articles were initially found and filtered, resulting in 56 articles reviewed. As the main contributions, this study provides responses to 19 research questions. A list of the challenges and the computational techniques identified is provided. The algorithms, machine learning techniques and data-sources used by the reviewed studies are also presented and organized through taxonomies. A comprehensive discussion of the identified techniques is conducted, finishing with a compilation of challenges, open issues and research opportunities. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that reviewed human mobility behavior covering a wide range of scenarios, including urban mobility, public transport, points and regions of interest, ridesharing, bike-sharing, traffic analysis, driving behavior, electric vehicle charging stations planning, mobility on demand, crowd analysis and others.

Stroke is an injury that affects the brain tissue, mainly caused by changes in the blood supply to a particular region of the brain. As consequence, some specific functions related to that affected region can be reduced, decreasing the quality of life of the patient. In this work, we deal with the problem of stroke detection in Computed Tomography (CT) images using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) optimized by Particle Swarm optimization (PSO). We considered two different kinds of strokes, ischemic and hemorrhagic, as well as making available a public dataset to foster the research related to stroke detection in the human brain. The dataset comprises three different types of images for each case, i.e., the original CT image, one with the segmented cranium and an additional one with the radiological density's map. The results evidenced that CNN's are suitable to deal with stroke detection, obtaining promising results. © 2018 IEEE.

We investigate here the potential of the spectroscopy in the identification and quantification of mixtures of kaolinite and goethite from the Continuum Removal (CR) of the spectra in the short-wave infrared. For this purpose, spectral measurements of the kaolinite, goethite, and controlled mixtures of these minerals were systematically performed. The continuum of the results were removed, the depth of the kaolinite diagnostic absorption was calculated and compared with a spectral library. It was possible to identify the kaolinite with high determination coefficient (R2>0.95) when its proportion reaches at least 60% in the mixture. For quantification purposes, it was possible to quantify kaolinite using the diagnostic absorption feature depth in the CR with a coefficient of determination of 0.99. © 2017 IEEE.

Demand generation is crucial for organizations, supplying sales teams with well-qualified commercial opportunities. Despite the wide variety of existing opportunity qualification methodologies, the subjective nature of experts' final evaluation remains an obstacle to efficiency and productivity in the business process. This research investigated how Fuzzy Set Theory and Fuzzy Logic could be applied to the BANT methodology for qualifying commercial opportunities, aiming to replace these deliberative evaluations by experts to increase the sales cycle performance. A fuzzy inference system was developed to emulate the assessments of the experts. The analysis of the ratings obtained after processing a sample of commercial opportunities from 2022 and 2023 confirmed the system's effectiveness in aligning with expert perceptions. While the study indicated room for refinements in the model, the findings underscore the potential to streamline the qualification of opportunities and improve sales cycle performance. © 2024 The Authors.

One of the main objectives in multimodal optimization is to find multiple optima solutions in a search space. Hence, population-based metaheuristics are suitable for this class of problems but their loss of diversity while converging may become a problem when tracking multiple optima. In this paper, we propose the use of a cluster-based external archive maintenance strategy along with the jDE algorithm, namely NCjDE-HJ ar . The DBSCAN algorithm is employed to group candidate solutions in an external archive representing multiple peaks that will feed the Hooke-Jeeves local search algorithm. Also, the Michalewicz mutation strategy is applied to refine the solutions found by the jDE algorithm. The proposed approach is compared with five state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of peak ratio and the results obtained show that the proposed modifications favor the finding more multimodal peaks.

A contemporaneous data center (DC) hosts multiple competitive network data flows from different applications, sharing the intermediate switches capacities. In this context, congestion control and avoidance on Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) are critical tasks to ensure the quality of service for hosted applications. Specifically, Software Defined Networking (SDN) created an opportunity to avoid congestion once the centralized controller can gather ongoing and historical information from all network switches and flows. However, the data gathered is enormous, and fast-computing algorithms are crucial for decision-making. In this sense, this work proposes Reinforcement Learning- and SDN-aided Congestion Avoidance Tool (RSCAT), which uses data classification to determine if the network is congested and actor-critic reinforcement learning to find better TCP parameters. Our experimental analysis shows RSCAT could decrease the Flow Completion Time (FCT) of DCTCP and CUBIC variants in several cases without requiring any software update on DC end-points.
