This paper introduces CompressedMediQ, a novel hybrid quantum-classical machine learning pipeline specifically developed to address the computational challenges associated with high-dimensional multi-class neuroimaging data analysis. Standard neuroimaging datasets, such as large-scale MRI data from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative and Neuroimaging in Frontotemporal Dementia, present significant hurdles due to their vast size and complexity. CompressedMediQ integrates classical HPC nodes for advanced MRI pre-processing and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-PCA-based feature extraction and reduction, addressing the limited-qubit availability for quantum data encoding in the NISQ era. This is followed by Quantum Support Vector Machine (QSVM) classification. By utilizing quantum kernel methods, the pipeline optimizes feature mapping and classification, enhancing data separability and outperforming traditional neuroimaging analysis techniques. Experimental results highlight the pipeline’s superior accuracy in dementia staging, validating the practical use of quantum machine learning in clinical diagnostics. Despite the limitations of NISQ devices, this proof-of-concept demonstrates the transformative potential of quantum-enhanced learning, paving the way for scalable and precise diagnostic tools in healthcare and signal processing.

Nowadays, data has become an invaluable asset to entities and companies, and keeping it secure represents a major challenge. Data centers are responsible for storing data provided by software applications. Nevertheless, the number of vulnerabilities has been increasing every day. Managing such vulnerabilities is essential for building a reliable and secure network environment. Releasing patches to fix security flaws in software is a common practice to handle these vulnerabilities. However, prioritization becomes crucial for organizations with an increasing number of vulnerabilities since time and resources to fix them are usually limited. This review intends to present a survey of vulnerability ranking techniques and promote a discussion on how multi-objective optimization could benefit the management of vulnerabilities risk prioritization. The state-of-the-art approaches for risk prioritization were reviewed, intending to develop an effective model for ranking vulnerabilities in data centers. The main contribution of this work is to point out multi-objective optimization as a not commonly explored but promising strategy to prioritize vulnerabilities, enabling better time management and increasing security. Wearable devices have emerged from the evolution of communication and information technology, along with the miniaturization of electronic components. These devices monitor the user's physiology on a periodic basis and generally have low battery autonomy. This article proposes the Odin system, a multi-agent system that performs real-time analysis of physiological data in order to adapt the collection according to the user's health condition. Two types of adaptation were proposed in terms of adapting the collection. The first, wait-time adaptation (WTA), consists of collecting physiological data through a sensor defined as the main sensor, where the frequency of the collection is based on the user's condition. Meanwhile, the second, paused sensors adaptation (PSA), manages the activation status of secondary sensors when the main sensor suggests a possible risk to the user's health. An evaluation was implemented through two steps. First, a simulation was performed with requests control to optimize the parameters of the data collection. These results showed an increase of 214% in battery life in the adaptive scenario compared to one with no adaptivity. Second, Odin's adaptivity was evaluated in terms of a real dataset, which allowed for the reduction of the number of requests. This reduction optimized the battery consumption, with a 66% improvement over data collection with no adaptivity. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.

New sensors aboard recently launched satellites have induced the development of several measures aimed to indicate the presence of many materials over the Earth. Karsts are places rich in carbonate rocks and present large economic and environmental importance. This paper aimed at assessing the performance and consistency of different carbonate estimators derived from orbital images acquired over a controlled karst area. Experiments were assisted by a multi-scaled reference data built through a high spatial resolution Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) image acquired over the selected area. Results show a considerable unconformity among selected measures and better performance presented by indices exploiting measures along visible and infrared spectral regions.

One of the main objectives in multimodal optimization is to find multiple optima solutions in a search space. Hence, population-based metaheuristics are suitable for this class of problems but their loss of diversity while converging may become a problem when tracking multiple optima. In this paper, we propose the use of a cluster-based external archive maintenance strategy along with the jDE algorithm, namely NCjDE-HJ ar . The DBSCAN algorithm is employed to group candidate solutions in an external archive representing multiple peaks that will feed the Hooke-Jeeves local search algorithm. Also, the Michalewicz mutation strategy is applied to refine the solutions found by the jDE algorithm. The proposed approach is compared with five state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of peak ratio and the results obtained show that the proposed modifications favor the finding more multimodal peaks.

Protein Structure Prediction (PSP) problem is an open problem in bioinformatics and, as the problem scales, complexity and processing time increases. In this way, robust methods and massively parallel architectures are required. This paper presents a GPU-based hybrid algorithm, named cuHjDE, to handle the 2D-AB off-lattice PSP problem. The cuHjDE is composed of the jDE algorithm and the Hooke-Jeeves local search algorithm. An important feature present in the cuHjDE algorithm is the use of a crowding mechanism to avoid premature convergence promoting diversification in the search space. The proposed algorithm is compared with four state-of-the-art algorithms in both artificial and real proteins. Also, the impact of using GPU is analyzed. Experimental results point out that the proposed approach is competitive in artificial sequences and achieved new best results for all real sequence proteins.

Network configuration, performance, and congestion impact the Quality of Service (QoS) of Moodle Learning Management System (LMS). Moreover, LMSs composing modules have different QoS demands for each activity. Upon a network, they compete for resources with applications for social media, streaming, chat, cloud file synchronization, games, among others. Eventually, the network congestion can leave the LMS service unavailable for students and professors. Recently, the popularization of Software Defined Networks (SDN) revolutionized the network management. We propose SDN4Moodle, a toolset to increase the QoS of Moodle services. SDN4Moodle was implemented in conformity to Moodle's plugin guidelines, and it is controlled by internal Moodle events. Each action performed by a Moodle's user is dynamically translated into network forwarding rules, and switches configuration. Our experimental results indicates SDN4Moodle, an open-source system, efficiently achieves flows isolation and bandwidth control on shared networks. © 2018 IEEE.

Hydrological models are extensively used in applications such as water resources, climate change, land use, and forecast systems. The focus of this paper is performance optimization of the MGB hydrological model, which is widely employed to simulate water flows in large-scale watersheds. The optimization strategies that we selected include AVX-512 vectorization, thread-parallelism on multi-core CPUs (OpenMP), and data-parallelism on many-core GPUs (CUDA). We conducted experiments for real-world input datasets on state-of-the-art HPC systems based on Intel's Skylake CPUs and NVIDIA GPUs. In addition, a Roofline model characterization for these datasets confirmed performance improvements of up to 37.5x on the most time-consuming part of the code and 8.6x on the full MGB model. The work proposed herein shows that careful optimizations are needed for hydrological models to achieve a significant fraction of the performance potential in modern processors.

Elasticity is one of the most important features of cloud computing, referring to the ability to add or remove resources according to the needs of the application or service. Particularly for High Performance computing (HPC), elasticity can provide a better use of resources and also a reduction in the execution time of applications. Today, we observe the emergence of proactive initiatives to handle the elasticity and HPC duet, but they present at least one problem related to the need of a previous user experience, large processing time or completion of parameters. Concerning the aforesaid context, this paper presents ProElastic – a lightweight model that uses proactive elasticity to drive resource reorganisation decisions for HPC applications. Our idea is to explore both performance and adaptivity at middleware level in an effortless way at user perspective. Network-aware container scheduling in multi-tenant data center

Network management on multi-tenant container-based data center has critical impact on performance. Tenants encapsulate applications in containers abstracting away details on hosting infrastructures, and entrust data center management framework with the provisioning of network Quality-of-Service requirements. In this paper, we propose a network-aware multi-criteria container scheduler to jointly process containers and network requirements. We introduce a new Mixed Integer Linear programming formulation for network-aware scheduling encompassing both tenants and providers metrics. We describe two GPU-accelerated modules to address the complexity barrier of the problem and efficiently process scheduling requests. Our experiments show that our scheduling approach accounting for both network and containers outperforms traditional algorithms used by containers orchestrators. Copyright © 2019, The Authors.
