The development of steels requires multiples manufacturing steps and involves a high number of variables and non-linear processes. Although there are data-driven models used to predict such steels’ mechanical properties, their design often requires specialized Machine Learning knowledge, hampering the application of such models. In this paper, an Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) framework, namely Auto-Keras, was employed to generate and train a data-driven model on a steel data-set through Neural Architecture Search. This paper proposes predicting the mechanical properties of steels applying Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) as a multivariate regression problem using AutoML. The results show that even with a vast parameter search space, it is possible to generate ANNs with different architectures that provide high performance with free and open-source AutoML. Three ANNs with different activation functions were optimized using Auto-Keras and compared. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Computer vision systems allow digital reconstruction of targets by capturing information through remote sensors such as video cameras and scanners. In this context, the objective of this work was to evaluate the capacity and quality of three-dimensional reconstruction of static targets using the ZED stereoscopic camera. For this goal, we took images of several environments and objects with different surfaces, textures, lighting, distances and acquisition speeds. The results were compared with high-density and high precision point clouds obtained from the targets using a Leica Viva TS15 total station. The data were processed in the CloudCompare software to calculate the displacement between the models generated by the camera and the total station. Under certain circumstances, this technology is able to reconstruct three-dimensional objects and environments with an error of a few centimeters. © 2018 IEEE.

In Infrastructure as a Service clouds, customers lease virtual resources (e.g., CPU, memory, network) offered by cloud providers, paying for the allocated capacity of resources, regardless of their effective use. In this context, it is in the interest of the customers to reserve resources with sufficient capacity so that their applications achieve good performance while, at the same time, minimizing their expenses with idle capacities. The correct provisioning of resources is also invaluable to providers, who seek to maximize the resource usage of their physical infrastructures, avoiding spending maintenance costs with unused hardware such as high capacity servers and networking devices. We introduce Escada, a novel model for network bandwidth prediction to guide the provisioning of virtual machines. Escada is application-oblivious and dynamically adapts to changes in a virtual machine workload profile. The network flows of a virtual machine are monitored and used to estimate its total required bandwidth over a time period. A prediction algorithm is then applied to the entire history of estimates to predict the virtual machine future required bandwidth. Our experimental evaluation shows that the estimates provided by Escada are useful for guiding the prediction of network bandwidth requirements, providing accurate bandwidth estimates even when the network is under-provisioned. Furthermore, Escada correctly adjusts its prediction algorithm faster than the state-of-the-art model and predicts more reliably during the adjusting period. © 2017 IEEE.

This paper discusses an approach to generate VHDL descriptions from high-level specifications, specifically UML/MARTE models that include aspect-oriented semantics. Standard UML diagrams describe the handling of functional requirements, whereas crosscutting concerns associated with the non-functional requirements are handle by aspects. UML-to-VHDL transformation is performed automatically by a script-based code generation tool named GenERTiCA. For that, mapping rules scripts define how to generate VHDL constructs from model elements, including the implementation of aspects adaptations. The generated VHDL description does not require any manual modification, in order to be fully synthesized onto a FPGA device. Some case studies have been performed to evaluate the proposed approach, however, this paper discusses the line-following robot implemented as a FPGA-based embedded system. An improvement in system design has been obtained, namely an increase in system performance and a better utilization of FPGA reconfigurable resources. Such positive results are related to a better modularization of components achieved by using the proposed high-level approach.

This work aims to assist the design of FPGA-based embedded system by extending the AMoDE-RT approach in order to support automatic generation of VHDL descriptions from high-level specification of embedded systems. This paper discusses the handling of non-functional requirements using concepts from Aspect-Oriented Software Development (AOSD) paradigm. The proposed approach promotes the specification of platform-independent aspects in UML/MARTE model, which is later used to generate the system VHDL description. A set of mapping rules has been created to implement the model-level aspects using VHDL constructs/statements. GenERTiCA tool has been extended to allow the UML-to-VHDL automatic transformation, including the weaving of aspects adaptations code into the generated VHDL description. Such an approach allows not only the generation of a fully sinthesizable VHDL description, but also the reuse of aspects in distinct implementation technologies. The obtained results show an increase in system performance and a better utilization of FPGA configurable resources due to the improved components modularization. These results indicate the practicability of full translation of platform-independent aspects into VHDL, opening room for gains in embedded real-time system design, including reuse and design effort reduction.

Tetris is a very popular game, having sold more than 450 millions units according to Forbes and it is also a very popular research subject in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Computational Intelligence. This work has two main goals. The first goal consists of providing a standardized testing scenario based on an Emulator to run the Original Tetris Game. The second goal is to test several feature sets found in the literature in the proposed Real Coded Genetic Algorithm Based Agent. The results obtained showed the viability of having an agent playing the Original Tetris Game.

This paper presents a genetic algorithm for resource scheduling in service discovery to MANETs operating in emergency scenarios. The shared resources could be ambulances or support cars. Through an appropriate model for scheduling resources, we aim to attend the greatest number of victims in the affected area. Performance evaluation results on the Network Simulator NS-3 confirm the effectiveness of genetic algorithm for resource scheduling when compared to the A-Star algorithm which is simple heuristic method, that prioritizing paths that seem to be leading closer to the goal.

Fuzzy logic is used in many applications from industrial process control to automotive applications, including consumers trend forecast, aircraft maneuvering control and others. Considering the increased interest in using of multi-rotor aircrafts (usually called drones) for many kinds of applications, it is important to study new methods to improve multi-rotor maneuverability while controlling its stability in a proper way. Controlling the flight of multi-rotors, specially those equipped six rotors, is not a trivial task. When considering the design of such a control systems, traditional approaches such as PD/PID are very difficult to design, in spite of being easily implementable. This work proposes an approach based on multiple interconnected fuzzy controllers, aiming to control the various aspects related to maneuverability of a hexacopter carrying a free payload forming a pendulum. The behavior produced by such a control system has been simulated on a well-known robotics simulation environment and analyzed in terms of flight stability, as well as roll, pitch and yaw movements. The results show the feasibility of the proposed approach in keeping the hexacopter flying in a stable way.

In the quest to engage and motivate users on the use of mobile applications, the gamification concept has been excelling in the market since incorporates game elements in a non-game context. Scoring systems, challenges, competitions and badges, are some of the elements implemented in many fields, such as health, education, ecological awareness, among others. In this context, this study aimed to systematically review available literature to identify gamification strategies used in mobile applications. A search was conducted in ACM, Science Direct and Scopus databases, from March to June 2016. A total of 402 studies were found, 23 of which met the eligibility criteria. The results demonstrated the heterogeneity of gamification elements being used and the impact they caused in the applications, especially as a motivational factor for users. This study provides the basis for future research on gamification methods and emphasizes the importance of this concept to increase engagement and provide enjoyment to users.

Network configuration, performance, and congestion impact the Quality of Service (QoS) of Moodle Learning Management System (LMS). Moreover, LMSs composing modules have different QoS demands for each activity. Upon a network, they compete for resources with applications for social media, streaming, chat, cloud file synchronization, games, among others. Eventually, the network congestion can leave the LMS service unavailable for students and professors. Recently, the popularization of Software Defined Networks (SDN) revolutionized the network management. We propose SDN4Moodle, a toolset to increase the QoS of Moodle services. SDN4Moodle was implemented in conformity to Moodle's plugin guidelines, and it is controlled by internal Moodle events. Each action performed by a Moodle's user is dynamically translated into network forwarding rules, and switches configuration. Our experimental results indicates SDN4Moodle, an open-source system, efficiently achieves flows isolation and bandwidth control on shared networks.
