Cloud computing provides computational resources (processing, storage, software, network) to users in a scalable and dynamic way over the Internet. The use of these resources are impacted by issues related to privacy, security and trust. In this sense, this paper presents a trust reputation architecture applied in the cloud computing environment. The reputed trust is based on two trust indicators: objective and subjective ones. The objective trust indicator is based on the historical QoS indicators of a cloud provider. Then, the subjective trust indicator is composed of the users' feedbacks to the cloud providers. In order to evaluate the proposed architecture, simulations were performed using a P2P Network Simulator in order to emulate cloud providers and their clients. The evaluation results show the architecture applicability with low overhead.

Virtualization allows for more efficient hardware usage by allowing several instances of Operating Systems (OSs) or Virtual Machines (VMs) to run on a physical server. Containers are a subset of lightweight virtualization and reduce the overhead of virtualizing an entire OS by sharing the server's OS with the virtualized instances. Moreover, containers work closer to hardware than VMs and are similar to Linux processes, however, this limits connectivity freedom since processes do not have access to network addressing. To resemble container's communication to that of conventional networks we use network drivers. Studies show that in processing- or memory-bound scenarios, containers perform better than VMs, but in network-bound scenarios they achieve less performance. This work analyzes performance of networking implementations for Docker in different container allocations and workload scenarios.

A contemporaneous data center (DC) hosts multiple competitive network data flows from different applications, sharing the intermediate switches capacities. In this context, congestion control and avoidance on Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) are critical tasks to ensure the quality of service for hosted applications. Specifically, Software Defined Networking (SDN) created an opportunity to avoid congestion once the centralized controller can gather ongoing and historical information from all network switches and flows. However, the data gathered is enormous, and fast-computing algorithms are crucial for decision-making. In this sense, this work proposes Reinforcement Learning- and SDN-aided Congestion Avoidance Tool (RSCAT), which uses data classification to determine if the network is congested and actor-critic reinforcement learning to find better TCP parameters. Our experimental analysis shows RSCAT could decrease the Flow Completion Time (FCT) of DCTCP and CUBIC variants in several cases without requiring any software update on DC end-points.

In this paper we present the use of participatory design in a public health management system, called PRONTO, that is being developed in Brazil. This system involves a partnership between the city hall and the university of Blumenau and it is being developed by the Development Laboratory and Transfer of Technology. The project involves a health network with 64 units of family health, 8 ambulatories and 1 polyclinic. The paper describes the experience in the project phase of the Multidisciplinary Treatment System module and presents the obtained results.

Software supply chain security: a systematic literature review

In recent years, software supply chain security has attracted significant research attention. This research subject is concerned both with the security of infrastructures used to build software and deliver it to end users and with the security of software that contains external dependencies such as third-party packages and libraries, and its chief goal is to ensure that no vulnerabilities are introduced in the path between developers and users. This paper presents a Systematic Literature Review to identify knowledge gaps in software supply chain security. For this, we considered studies published between 2012 and 2023 in the search engines of IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, Engineering Village, Scopus, and arXiv. Of the 2051 studies obtained in the primary survey, only 85 are relevant for this research. Analyzing the studies, we observed gaps such as little discussion of software supply chains that involve cloud components, few proposals focused on the software distribution process, and a lack of use of threat modeling frameworks to help identify threats to the supply chain and validate the results. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

This work aims to assist the design of FPGA-based embedded system by extending the AMoDE-RT approach in order to support automatic generation of VHDL descriptions from high-level specification of embedded systems. For that, this work proposes a new set of mapping rules to translate UML/-MARTE elements into VHDL constructs, allowing the generation of fully synthesizable descriptions, including the embedded system structure and behavior. The proposed mapping rules have been implemented in GenERTiCA tool, which is used in AMoDE-RT to generate source code from UML/MARTE models, enabling the UML-to-VHDL automatic transformation. The proposed approach has been validated using a valve control system as case study. The obtained results show a decrease in FPGA used area, as well as a small impact on system performance. These results indicate the practicability of a full translation from UML elements into VHDL, opening room for specifying the system behavior using higher abstraction levels even for FPGA-based embedded system implementation.

Virtual infrastructures (VIs) consolidated the dynamic provisioning of computing and communication resources. A VI is a set of virtual machines interconnected by virtual links and switches/routers. Infrastructure providers (InPs) manage the physical substrates in which virtual resources requested by VIs (such as CPU, disk, memory, bandwidth) are reserved and allocated. Resource allocation is a complex problem that needs to satisfy different goals: users expect to run their applications on survivable VIs, while InPs aim to maximize profits, minimize costs and reduce substrate fragmentation. However, there is a dichotomy between minimizing substrate fragmentation, by co-locating VIs, and maximizing VI survivability, by sparsely allocating resources in order to decrease the impact of substrate failures. In this context, this paper discusses VI survivability and its impact on substrate fragmentation. We propose a mixed integer linear programming model to allocate resources considering the joint coordination of fragmentation and survivability. Experimental results suggest that it is possible to enhance VI survivability without significantly impacting substrate fragmentation.

Towards to Characterization of Network Management Traffic in OpenStack-Based Clouds

OpenStack is versatile and popular, allowing full customization for creating private or public IaaS clouds. This work addresses a network traffic analysis and characterization for the management domain inside OpenStack clouds. We conduct an induced lifecycle to execute virtual machine (VM)-related tasks, measure the traffic, and identify the services behind the traffic generated by these operations. Also, we analyze the impact of different images of operating systems (OSs) and VM’s flavor in the measured traffic. Moreover, we observe that predicting the volume of network traffic from operations, such as creation and shelving instances of VMs, helps estimate bandwidth boundaries, avoiding bottlenecks, for example. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Relying only on behaviors that emerge from simple responsive controllers; swarms of robots have been shown capable of autonomously aggregate themselves or objects into clusters without any form of communication. We push these controllers to the limit, requiring robots to sort themselves or objects into different clusters. Based on a responsive controller that maps the current reading of a line-of-sight sensor to a pair of speeds for the robots' differential wheels, we demonstrate how multiple tasks instances can be accomplished by a robotic swarm. Using the dividing rectangles approach and physics simulation, a training step optimizes the parameters of the controller guided by a fitness function. We conducted a series of systematic trials in physics-based simulation and evaluate the performance in terms of dispersion and the ratio of clustered robots/objects. Across 20 trials where 30 robots cluster themselves into 3 groups, an average of 99.83% of them were correctly clustered into their group after 300 s. Across 50 trials where 15 robots cluster 30 objects into 3 groups, an average of 61.20%, 82.87%, and 97.73% of objects were correctly clustered into their group after 600 s, 900 s, and 1800 s, respectively. The object cluster behavior scales well while the aggregation does not, the latter due to the requirement of control tuning based on the number of robots.

Recently, with popularisation of video streaming service, new video distribution technologies have been created. Currently, one of the most promising ones is the Moving Picture Expert Group Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP or MPEG-DASH. Even so, with the limitation of the TCP/IP network structure, the end user Quality of Experience (QoE) may be affected. One issue that can affect user QoE is the workload of content distribution servers. Thus, the unbalancing of server's workload comprising user's attendance can lead to a content server provider non optimised choice. This work presents two load-balancing solutions between MPEG-DASH video servers based on Software-Defined Networks, using as a balancing workload metric the throughput of the content server as well as the CPU load.
