Relation between diarrhea and infection by protozoans in dairy calves

Infections caused by protozoa often cause diarrhea in newborn calves, leading to high economic losses to dairy farms, diarrhea, often characterized by malabsorption of nutrients, may lead to malnutrition, weight loss, and high mortality rates. Diarrhea is a common clinical sign found in the first days of a calf life in many dairy and beef cattle farms. Therefore, the aim of our study was to verify if during the first 60 days of live, there was a relationship between the presence of Eimeria, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and the occurrence of diarrhea in calves, and the association of age and parasite presence. In this study, newborn calves were selected from farms with history of protozoa infections and diarrhea. A total of 26 calves were used in the study, 18 were positives for Giardia spp., 17 for Emeria spp., and 21 for Cryptosporidium spp., considering single and mixed infections. Furthermore, the survival rate of calves due to the presence of diarrhea was significantly different compared to the group without diarrhea, for all three protozoa. In addition, according to this study, it is possible to indicate that the occurrence of diarrhea is highly correlated to the presence of Giardia sp., leading to economic losses due to a low performance and weight gain of infected animals. © 2017, Springer-Verlag London.

Proteins are base molecules present in live organisms. The study of their structures and functions is of considerable importance for many application fields, particularly for the pharmaceutical area. This paper presents a multi-objective model to the Protein Structure Prediction problem, using three objectives: energy score, secondary structure information, and contact maps information. A BRKGA method is used as a global optimizer and adapted to work with multiple objective problems. Also, the MUFOLD-CL clustering method is applied to select a single predicted structure. Experiments were carried out to analyze the proposed model performance using state-of-the-art ab initio algorithms for comparison. Results obtained indicate that the proposed approach is competitive in terms of RMSD and GDT metrics.

One of the main objectives in multimodal optimization is to find multiple optima solutions in a search space. Hence, population-based metaheuristics are suitable for this class of problems but their loss of diversity while converging may become a problem when tracking multiple optima. In this paper, we propose the use of a cluster-based external archive maintenance strategy along with the jDE algorithm, namely NCjDE-HJ ar . The DBSCAN algorithm is employed to group candidate solutions in an external archive representing multiple peaks that will feed the Hooke-Jeeves local search algorithm. Also, the Michalewicz mutation strategy is applied to refine the solutions found by the jDE algorithm. The proposed approach is compared with five state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of peak ratio and the results obtained show that the proposed modifications favor the finding more multimodal peaks.

Face recognition (FR) systems based on populationbased heuristics algorithms is common nowadays. Depends on the approach, there is a need for tuning parameters in preprocessing step using optimization algorithms. Regarding FR challenges, the illumination variation is one of the critical factors. The homomorphic filter (HF) is one of the methods that can compensate ination aiding to stabilize the face images obtained under different lighting conditions. However, the HF requires some optimal parameters which can be possibly determined through optimization process. Based on this context, in this paper, we attempt to investigate the application of two population-based algorithms, the Jaya and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), in order to optimize the HF parameters in CMU-PIE and BIOINFO face databases. The high performance of both algorithms shows that they are suitable to compensate the illumination variation achieving 100% and 91.3% recognition rates on CMUPIE and BIO-INFO, respectively.

Protein Structure Prediction (PSP) problem is an open problem in bioinformatics and, as the problem scales, complexity and processing time increases. In this way, robust methods and massively parallel architectures are required. This paper presents a GPU-based hybrid algorithm, named cuHjDE, to handle the 2D-AB off-lattice PSP problem. The cuHjDE is composed of the jDE algorithm and the Hooke-Jeeves local search algorithm. An important feature present in the cuHjDE algorithm is the use of a crowding mechanism to avoid premature convergence promoting diversification in the search space. The proposed algorithm is compared with four state-of-the-art algorithms in both artificial and real proteins. Also, the impact of using GPU is analyzed. Experimental results point out that the proposed approach is competitive in artificial sequences and achieved new best results for all real sequence proteins.

This work aims to assist the design of FPGA-based embedded system by extending the AMoDE-RT approach in order to support automatic generation of VHDL descriptions from high-level specification of embedded systems. This paper discusses the handling of non-functional requirements using concepts from Aspect-Oriented Software Development (AOSD) paradigm. The proposed approach promotes the specification of platform-independent aspects in UML/MARTE model, which is later used to generate the system VHDL description. A set of mapping rules has been created to implement the model-level aspects using VHDL constructs/statements. GenERTiCA tool has been extended to allow the UML-to-VHDL automatic transformation, including the weaving of aspects adaptations code into the generated VHDL description. Such an approach allows not only the generation of a fully sinthesizable VHDL description, but also the reuse of aspects in distinct implementation technologies. The obtained results show an increase in system performance and a better utilization of FPGA configurable resources due to the improved components modularization. These results indicate the practicability of full translation of platform-independent aspects into VHDL, opening room for gains in embedded real-time system design, including reuse and design effort reduction.

A smart urban mobility considers the technological-based development in transport systems, services and their use to improve the movement of people and goods inter or intra-cities. Cities increasingly face problems caused by traffic and need to find solutions to improve mobility and to reduce congestion and pollution. In this paper, we present a Passenger Counting Scheme into buses. Embedded counting algorithms based on Computer Vision are proposed to count passenger arrivals and departures in real time. Experiments in a real scenario expose that the proposed scheme achieved a high percentage of success in passenger count.

Integrity of Cyber-Physical Discrete Event Systems under covert actuator attacks

The connectivity requirements brought by Industry 4.0 pose new challenges for cyber-physical systems (CPS), such as the strengthening of their resilience against cyberattacks. In this paper, we use the discrete event systems (DES) formalism to develop an approach that aims to protect CPS from covert actuator attacks using event permutation maps. In this approach, properly selected controllable events are permuted on the plant's site so that attacks on actuators do not have the impact on the plant as expected by the intruder and unsafe states are avoided. Furthermore, a property termed AE-protectability is presented to characterize the necessary and sufficient conditions for the system to be protected against such attacks through event permutations. The proposed approach is applied to a case study where the Identification of the attack is done without causing damage while maintaining the integrity of the system.

The efficient management of resources after a disaster, must take place within a short time and efficiently. Therefore, resource scheduling protocol which shares resources among the victims, respecting time constraints, is decisive. In disaster scenarios, communication infrastructure is usually damaged and a commonly used solution for ensuring connectivity between victims and providers is Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET). Fire brigade and ambulances might be insufficient if the number of victims is high. Hence, in order to provide an efficient resource scheduling approach that cares about the energy consumption, the number of requesters attended and the processing time, we present a Scheduling Resource protocol. Thus, to reduce the provider dislocation time and increase the number of victims attended the protocol was modeled based on Genetic Algorithms. Results show that this approach maintains the trade-off between the number of victims attended, therefore, minimize the energy consumption.

In Infrastructure as a Service clouds, customers lease virtual resources (e.g., CPU, memory, network) offered by cloud providers, paying for the allocated capacity of resources, regardless of their effective use. In this context, it is in the interest of the customers to reserve resources with sufficient capacity so that their applications achieve good performance while, at the same time, minimizing their expenses with idle capacities. The correct provisioning of resources is also invaluable to providers, who seek to maximize the resource usage of their physical infrastructures, avoiding spending maintenance costs with unused hardware such as high capacity servers and networking devices. We introduce Escada, a novel model for network bandwidth prediction to guide the provisioning of virtual machines. Escada is application-oblivious and dynamically adapts to changes in a virtual machine workload profile. The network flows of a virtual machine are monitored and used to estimate its total required bandwidth over a time period. A prediction algorithm is then applied to the entire history of estimates to predict the virtual machine future required bandwidth. Our experimental evaluation shows that the estimates provided by Escada are useful for guiding the prediction of network bandwidth requirements, providing accurate bandwidth estimates even when the network is under-provisioned. Furthermore, Escada correctly adjusts its prediction algorithm faster than the state-of-the-art model and predicts more reliably during the adjusting period. © 2017 IEEE.
