Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly central to the development of generative AI across diverse fields. While some anticipate these models may mark a step toward artificial general intelligence, their ability to handle complex causal reasoning remains unproven. Causal reasoning is essential for true general intelligence, particularly at Pearl’s interventional and counterfactual levels. In this work, we introduce ***, a dataset of over 8,000 natural causal questions in Portuguese, collected from real human interactions. Built upon a novel three-axis taxonomy, *** categorizes questions by causal intent, action requirements, and the level of causal reasoning needed (associational, interventional, or counterfactual). Our findings from evaluating ***’s seed questions with GPT-4o reveal that this LLM faces challenges in handling interventional and relation-seeking causal queries. These results suggest limitations in using GPT-4o for extending causal question annotations and highlight the need for improved LLM strategies in causal reasoning. *** provides a foundation for advancing LLM capabilities in causal understanding, particularly for the Portuguese-speaking world. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.

This paper presents an event-driven cloud-based serverless architecture for a remote patient monitoring system. The architecture is designed to be scalable, resilient, and cost-effective, and leverages managed cloud services to handle load variations and service faults. To evaluate the architecture, we conducted comprehensive capacity, scalability, and resilience tests. The test results show that the architecture can meet the performance, scalability, and reliability requirements of a remote patient monitoring system. Additionally, a detailed analysis of operational costs in the cloud confirms the cost-effectiveness of the solution and highlights practical opportunities for improvements.

Towards Emotionally Intelligent Software Engineers: Understanding Students’ Self-Perceptions After a Cooperative Learning Experience

[Background] Emotional Intelligence (EI) can impact Software Engineering (SE) outcomes through improved team communication, conflict resolution, and stress management. SE workers face increasing pressure to develop both technical and interpersonal skills, as modern software development emphasizes collaborative work and complex team interactions. Despite EI’s documented importance in professional practice, SE education continues to prioritize technical knowledge over emotional and social competencies. [Objective] This paper analyzes SE students’ self-perceptions of their EI after a two-month cooperative learning project, using Mayer and Salovey’s four-ability model to examine how students handle emotions in collaborative development. [Method] We conducted a case study with 29 SE students organized into four squads within a project-based learning course, collecting data through questionnaires and focus groups that included brainwriting and sharing circles, then analyzing the data using descriptive statistics and open coding. [Results] Students demonstrated stronger abilities in managing their own emotions compared to interpreting others’ emotional states. Despite limited formal EI training, they developed informal strategies for emotional management, including structured planning and peer support networks, which they connected to improved productivity and conflict resolution. [Conclusion] This study shows how SE students perceive EI in a collaborative learning context and provides evidence-based insights into the important role of emotional competencies in SE education. The high growth of companies in recent years has caused the transformation of local markets into global ones. The software industry is not stranger to this transformation and has been looking for effective ways to work in a distributed scenario. A critical activity in distributed projects concerns the assignment of tasks to remote teams. This is a multicriteria decision-making problem and can be supported by Verbal Decision Analysis approaches. This paper describes an approach based on Verbal Decision Analysis methods to aid decision on factors that influence the assignment of tasks to distrubuted teams. The approach is based on the ORCLASS and ZAPROS III-i methods. The first results showed that factors such as 'low turnover rate' and 'team maturity' are among those considered more important, and the factors 'personal trust', 'low labor cost', 'cultural similarities' and 'time zone' were considered less relevant in DSD context. © 2017 AISTI.

The Nesting Problems are a special class of cutting and packing (C&P) problems in which a set of items with arbitrary geometry must be positioned in a surface with a non-fixed length, aiming a minimization of the require area for allocation of all given demand. It is commonly applied in industries that operate in various types of manufacturers and exporters activities (e.g., shipbuilding, clothes, and glass). In this work, we propose a parallel biased random-key genetic algorithm with multiple populations (μ-BRKGA) to the Nesting Problems using a collision-free region (CFR) concept as position method, intending at a more efficient and fastest layout compaction to get "good" solutions. The problem layout of the proposed algorithm, a solution, is represented for placement order in the surface and the corresponding orientation. As the way of to evaluate our (μ-BRKGA) algorithm, computational tests using benchmark instances were applied, discussed and compared with different existing literature methods.

The launch of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software on the market requires careful planning, which incorporates a requirements prioritization process. Although there are numerous prioritization techniques, few satisfy quality criteria such as scalability, efficiency and ease of use. This research presents a survey of COTS software requirements prioritization to be potentially used by thousands of users. The HCV (Hierarchical Cumulative Voting) requirements prioritization technique was addressed and applied through a web questionnaire directly to potential users. At the end, 80 respondents sent the questionnaire and a score of requirements in ratio scale of measurement was obtained. It was found that the technique applied can respond positively to the needs and characteristics of Market-Driven Software Development, in similar situations to those described. © 2016 IEEE.

Manage the company process faster as possible and in the automated way has been one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century. Companies are constantly looking for the improvement of its processes in order to achieve a competitive advantage in the market and the reduction of internal costs. This challenge is particularly strong in government companies providing utility services to the population. The company Cagece (one basic sanitation company of the Brazilian government) know this problem and the difficulties it generated. In this paper, we present in a systematic way, a little about the problem, the suggested solution, and the results collected through the relationship disciplines of Software Engineering and BPM in order to show the innovation applied and to guide companies that search improvements in their processes. Artificial Intelligence techniques based on Machine Learning algorithms, Neural Networks and Naïve Bayes can optimise the diagnostic process of the SARS-CoV-2 or Covid-19. The most significant help of these techniques is analysing data recorded by health professionals when treating patients with this disease. Health professionals' more specific focus is due to the reduction in the number of observable signs and symptoms, ranging from an acute respiratory condition to severe pneumonia, showing an efficient form of attribute engineering. It is important to note that the clinical diagnosis can vary from asymptomatic to extremely harsh conditions. About 80% of patients with Covid-19 may be asymptomatic or have few symptoms. Approximately 20% of the detected cases require hospital care because they have difficulty breathing, of which about 5% may require ventilatory support in the Intensive Care Unit. Also, the present study proposes a hybrid approach model, structured in the composition of Artificial Intelligence techniques, using Machine Learning algorithms, associated with multicriteria methods of decision support based on the Verbal Decision Analysis methodology, aiming at the discovery of knowledge, as well as exploring the predictive power of specific data in this study, to optimise the diagnostic models of Covid-19. Active mobility is becoming an essential component of the green transition in modern cities. However, the challenge of designing an efficient network of protected bike lanes without disrupting existing road networks for motorised vehicles remains unsolved. This paper focuses on the specific case of Milan, using a network approach that considers street widths to optimise the placement of dedicated bike lanes at the edges of the network. Unlike other network approaches in this field, our method considers the actual shapes of the streets, which introduces a realistic aspect lacking in current studies. We used these data to simulate cycling networks that maximise connectivity while minimising the impact of bike lane placement on the drivable network. Our mixed simulation strategies optimise for edge betweenness and width. Furthermore, we quantify the impact of dedicated bike lane infrastructure on the existing road network, demonstrating that it is feasible to create highly effective cycling networks with minimal disruption caused by lane width reductions. This paper illustrates how realistic cycling lanes can be simulated using road width data and discusses the challenges and benefits of moving beyond one-dimensional road data in network studies. Human hearing is an important sense, which complements the other senses, and is essential for children to begin to acquire basic concepts of the world;however, in severe cases of disability, children become marginalized from these benefits. An example of this is with music, a deaf individual is to be able to perceive it. With this in mind, we developed a novel medical expert system based on virtual reality, called Toc-Tum mini-games, applying basic concepts of music in an accessible way to the deaf culture. The intelligent proposed system is validated in two different tests: (a) with the target audience to evaluate the interest in the game and (b) with professionals knowledgeable in the field of music or who have had contact with the deaf, evaluate the impact of the game teaching music to the deaf. The tests with the target audience showed that the methods of interaction allowed the children to understand most of the stages and that they were animated during the test days. Regarding the professionals, they were interested in the possibility of using the proposed system in question, even if some modifications in the design had to be made. The results showed that the Toc-Tum mini-games is an intelligent tool capable of introducing music in a playful and manageable way using a virtual environment. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
