Quantum phase transitions in long-range interacting hyperuniform spin chains in a transverse field

Hyperuniform states of matter are characterized by anomalous suppression of long-wavelength density fluctuations. While most of the interesting cases of disordered hyperuniformity are provided by complex many-body systems such as liquids or amorphous solids, classical spin chains with certain long-range interactions have been shown to demonstrate the same phenomenon. Such spin-chain systems are ideal models for exploring the effects of quantum mechanics on hyperuniformity. It is well-known that the transverse field Ising model shows a quantum phase transition (QPT) at zero temperature. Under the quantum effects of a transverse magnetic field, classical hyperuniform spin chains are expected to lose their hyperuniformity. High-precision simulations of these cases are complicated because of the presence of highly nontrivial long-range interactions. We perform an extensive analysis of these systems using density matrix renormalization group simulations to study the possibilities of phase transitions and the mechanism by which they lose hyperuniformity. Even for a spin chain of length 30, we see discontinuous changes in properties like the “τ order metric” of the ground state, the measure of hyperuniformity, and the second cumulant of the total magnetization along the x-direction, all suggestive of first-order QPTs. An interesting feature of the phase transitions in these disordered hyperuniform spin chains is that, depending on the parameter values, the presence of a transverse magnetic field may lead remarkably to an increase in the order of the ground state as measured by the “τ order metric,” even if hyperuniformity is lost. Therefore, it would be possible to design materials to target specific novel quantum behaviors in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Our numerical investigations suggest that these spin chains can show no more than two QPTs. Deuterium-tritium fusion process in strong laser fields: Semiclassical simulation

We investigate the deuterium-tritium (DT) fusion process in the presence of strong laser fields with a semiclassical (SC) method. In this model, two nuclei with a given incident kinetic energy that closely approach each other are simulated by tracing the classical Newtonian trajectories in the combined Coulomb repulsive potentials and laser fields. At the nearest position or classical turning point, quantum tunneling through the Coulomb barrier emerges, and its penetrability is estimated with the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin formula. Nuclear fusion occurs after the tunneling, and the total fusion cross section takes the Gamow form. We find that the tunneling penetrability can be enhanced dramatically because the nuclei can closely approach each other due to the quiver motion of the charged nuclei driven by the intense laser fields. We then calculate the DT fusion section for a wide range of laser parameters according to various incident nuclei kinetic energies and obtain the phase diagrams for the enhanced DT fusion. We compare our SC results with the quantum results of the Kramers-Henneberger approximation and the Volkov state approximation.

Methodology to construct large realizations of perfectly hyperuniform disordered packings

Disordered hyperuniform packings (or dispersions) are unusual amorphous two-phase materials that are endowed with exotic physical properties. Such hyperuniform systems are characterized by an anomalous suppression of volume-fraction fluctuations at infinitely long-wavelengths, compared to ordinary disordered materials. While there has been growing interest in such singular states of amorphous matter, a major obstacle has been an inability to produce large samples that are perfectly hyperuniform due to practical limitations of conventional numerical and experimental methods. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a general theoretical methodology to construct perfectly hyperuniform packings in d-dimensional Euclidean space Rd. Specifically, beginning with an initial general tessellation of space by disjoint cells that meets a “bounded-cell” condition, hard particles of general shape are placed inside each cell such that the local-cell particle packing fractions are identical to the global packing fraction. We prove that the constructed packings with a polydispersity in size are perfectly hyperuniform in the infinite-sample-size limit, regardless of particle shapes, positions, and numbers per cell. We use this theoretical formulation to devise an efficient and tunable algorithm to generate extremely large realizations of such packings. We employ two distinct initial tessellations: Voronoi as well as sphere tessellations. Beginning with Voronoi tessellations, we show that our algorithm can remarkably convert extremely large nonhyperuniform packings into hyperuniform ones in R2 and R3. Implementing our theoretical methodology on sphere tessellations, we establish the hyperuniformity of the classical Hashin-Shtrikman multiscale coated-spheres structures, which are known to be two-phase media microstructures that possess optimal effective transport and elastic properties. Model reduction with memory and the machine learning of dynamical systems

The well-known Mori-Zwanzig theory tells us that model reduction leads to memory effect. For a long time, modeling the memory effect accurately and efficiently has been an important but nearly impossible task in developing a good reduced model. In this work, we explore a natural analogy between recurrent neural networks and the Mori-Zwanzig formalism to establish a systematic approach for developing reduced models with memory. Two training models-a direct training model and a dynamically coupled training model-are proposed and compared. We apply these methods to the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and the Navier-Stokes equation. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method can produce reduced model with good performance on both short-term prediction and long-term statistical properties. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. Hyperuniformity of generalized random organization models

Studies of random organization models of monodisperse (i.e., identical) spherical particles have shown that a hyperuniform state is achievable when the system goes through an absorbing phase transition to a critical state. Here we investigate to what extent hyperuniformity is preserved when the model is generalized to particles with a size distribution and/or nonspherical shapes. We begin by examining binary disks in two dimensions and demonstrate that their critical states are hyperuniform as two-phase media, but not hyperuniform nor multihyperuniform as point patterns formed by the particle centroids. We further confirm the generality of our findings by studying particles with a continuous size distribution. Finally, to study the effect of rotational degrees of freedom, we extend our model to noncircular particles, namely, hard rectangles with various aspect ratios, including the hard-needle limit. Although these systems exhibit only short-range orientational order, hyperuniformity is still preserved. Our analysis reveals that the redistribution of the "mass" of the particles rather than the particle centroids is central to this dynamical process. The consideration of the "active volume fraction" of generalized random organization models may help to resolve which universality class they belong to and hence may lead to a deeper theoretical understanding of absorbing-state models. Our results suggest that general particle systems subject to random organization can be a robust way to fabricate a wide class of hyperuniform states of matter by tuning the structures via different particle-size and -shape distributions. This in turn potentially enables the creation of multifunctional hyperuniform materials with desirable optical, transport and mechanical properties. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. Probing H2 Double Ionization with Bicircular Laser Fields

We present a kinematically complete study on strong-field double ionization of H2 molecules in two-color bicircular laser fields. The releasing times of electrons and protons are recorded with the double-hand attoclock. We observe the relative emission angles of two electrons oscillate with the kinetic energy release of protons, indicating the internal concerted four-body fragmentation. Using a three-dimensional molecular semiclassical ensemble model, we have disentangled the attosecond correlated electron emission in H2 double ionization. This work reveals the strong electron-nuclear coupling in the molecular bond breaking and may open up a new approach to experimentally accessing the intramolecular electron and bond dynamics with bicircular fields.

Phase retrieval with holography and untrained priors: Tackling the challenges of low-photon nanoscale imaging

Phase retrieval is the inverse problem of recovering a signal from magnitude-only Fourier measurements, and underlies numerous imaging modalities, such as Coherent Diffraction Imaging (CDI). A variant of this setup, known as holography, includes a reference object that is placed adjacent to the specimen of interest before measurements are collected. The resulting inverse problem, known as holographic phase retrieval, is well-known to have improved problem conditioning relative to the original. This innovation, i.e. Holographic CDI, becomes crucial at the nanoscale, where imaging specimens such as viruses, proteins, and crystals require low-photon measurements. This data is highly corrupted by Poisson shot noise, and often lacks low-frequency content as well. In this work, we introduce a dataset-free deep learning framework for holographic phase retrieval adapted to these challenges. The key ingredients of our approach are the explicit and flexible incorporation of the physical forward model into an automatic differentiation procedure, the Poisson log-likelihood objective function, and an optional untrained deep image prior. We perform extensive evaluation under realistic conditions. Compared to competing classical methods, our method recovers signal from higher noise levels and is more resilient to suboptimal reference design, as well as to large missing regions of low frequencies in the observations. Finally, we show that these properties carry over to experimental data acquired on optical wavelengths. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to consider a dataset-free machine learning approach for holographic phase retrieval. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Applying Graph Theory and Mathematical-computational Modelling to Study a Neurophysiological Circuit

The aim of the present study is to contribute to the knowledge about the functioning of the neuronal circuits. We built a mathematical-computational model using graph theory for a complex neurophysiological circuit consisting of a reverberating neuronal circuit and a parallel neuronal circuit, which could be coupled. Implementing our model in C++ and applying neurophysiological values found in the literature, we studied the discharge pattern of the reverberant circuit and the parallel circuit separately for the same input signal pattern, examining the influence of the refractory period and the synaptic delay on the respective output signal patterns. Then, the same study was performed for the complete circuit, in which the two circuits were coupled, and the parallel circuit could then influence the functioning of the reverberant. The results showed that the refractory period played an important role in forming the pattern of the output spectrum of a reverberating circuit. The inhibitory action of the parallel circuit was able to regulate the reverberation frequency, suggesting that parallel circuits may be involved in the control of reverberation circuits related to motive activities underlying precision tasks and perhaps underlying neural work processes and immediate memories.

Uncovering multiscale order in the prime numbers via scattering

The prime numbers have been a source of fascination for millenia and continue to surprise us. Motivated by the hyperuniformity concept, which has attracted recent attention in physics and materials science, we show that the prime numbers in certain large intervals possess unanticipated order across length scales and represent the first example of a new class of many-particle systems with pure point diffraction patterns, which we call effectively limit-periodic. In particular, the primes in this regime are hyperuniform. This is shown analytically using the structure factor S(k), proportional to the scattering intensity from a many-particle system. Remarkably, the structure factor for primes is characterized by dense Bragg peaks, like a quasicrystal, but positioned at certain rational wavenumbers, like a limit-periodic point pattern. We identify a transition between ordered and disordered prime regimes that depends on the intervals studied. Our analysis leads to an algorithm that enables one to predict primes with high accuracy. We study the pair correlations between prime numbers in an interval M ≤ p ≤ M + L with M → ∞, L/M → β > 0. By analyzing the structure factor, we prove, conditionally on the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture on prime pairs, that the primes are characterized by unanticipated multiscale order. Specifically, their limiting structure factor is that of a union of an infinite number of periodic systems and is characterized by dense set of Dirac delta functions. Primes in dyadic intervals are the first examples of what we call effectively limit-periodic point configurations. This behavior implies anomalously suppressed density fluctuations compared to uncorrelated (Poisson) systems at large length scales, which is now known as hyperuniformity. Using a scalar order metric τ calculated from the structure factor, we identify a transition between the order exhibited when L is comparable to M and the uncorrelated behavior when L is only logarithmic in M. Our analysis for the structure factor leads to an algorithm to reconstruct primes in a dyadic interval with high accuracy. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.
