We study the quantum phase diagram of a Bose-Hubbard chain whose dynamics conserves both boson number and boson dipole moment, a situation which can arise in strongly tilted optical lattices. The conservation of dipole moment has a dramatic effect on the phase diagram, which we analyze by combining a field theory analysis with DMRG simulations. In the thermodynamic limit, the phase diagram is dominated by various types of incompressible dipolar condensates. In finite-sized systems however, it may be possible to stabilize a 'Bose-Einstein insulator': an exotic compressible phase which is insulating, despite the absence of a charge gap. We suggest several ways by which these exotic phases can be identified in near-term cold atom experiments. © 2022, CC BY.

We have studied the resonant and nonperturbative coupling of transverse optical phonons in lead telluride with photons in small-mode-volume terahertz cavities, observing a giant vacuum Rabi splitting on the order of the uncoupled phonon and cavity frequencies. Our terahertz time-domain spectroscopy experimental data, systematically collected as a function of sample thickness, temperature, and cavity length, can be well reproduced by our electromagnetic simulations. These results demonstrate that this uniquely tunable platform is promising for realizing and understanding predicted cavity-vacuum-induced ferroelectric instabilities, as well as for exploring applications of light-matter coupling in the ultra-and deep-strong coupling regimes in quantum technology.

Asymptotics of representation learning in finite Bayesian neural networks

Recent works have suggested that finite Bayesian neural networks may sometimes outperform their infinite cousins because finite networks can flexibly adapt their internal representations. However, our theoretical understanding of how the learned hidden layer representations of finite networks differ from the fixed representations of infinite networks remains incomplete. Perturbative finite-width corrections to the network prior and posterior have been studied, but the asymptotics of learned features have not been fully characterized. Here, we argue that the leading finite-width corrections to the average feature kernels for any Bayesian network with linear readout and Gaussian likelihood have a largely universal form. We illustrate this explicitly for three tractable network architectures: deep linear fully-connected and convolutional networks, and networks with a single nonlinear hidden layer. Our results begin to elucidate how task-relevant learning signals shape the hidden layer representations of wide Bayesian neural networks. © 2021, CC BY-NC-SA.

Bloch-Grüneisen temperature and universal scaling of normalized resistivity in doped graphene revisited

We resolved some controversial issues on the Bloch-Grüneisen (BG) temperature in doped graphene via analytical and numerical calculations based on full inelastic electron-acoustic-phonon (EAP) scattering rate and various approximation schemes. Analytic results for BG temperature obtained by semi-inelastic (SI) approximation (which gives scattering rates in excellent agreement with the full inelastic scattering rates) are compared with those obtained by quasielastic (QE) approximation and the commonly adopted value of ΘFLA=2ℏvLAkF/kB. It is found that the commonly adopted BG temperature in graphene (ΘFLA) is about 5 times larger than the value obtained by the QE approximation and about 2.5 times larger than that by the SI approximation, when using the crossing-point temperature where low-temperature and high-temperature limits of the resistivity (ρ) meet. The corrected analytic relation based on SI approximation agrees extremely well with the transition temperatures determined by fitting the low- and high-T behavior of available experimental data of graphene's resistivity. Using the analytic expression of ΘBG we can prove that the normalized resistivity defined as R=ρ(T)/ρ(ΘBG) plotted as a function of (T/ΘBG) is independent of the carrier density. We also introduced a way to determine the BG temperature including the full inelastic EAP scattering rate when the deviation of electron energy from the chemical potential is taken into account by finding the maximum of ∂ρ/∂T.

A canonical feature of the constraint satisfaction problems in NP is approximation hardness, where in the worst case, finding sufficient-quality approximate solutions is exponentially hard for all known methods. Fundamentally, the lack of any guided local minimum escape method ensures both exact and approximate classical approximation hardness, but the equivalent mechanism(s) for quantum algorithms are poorly understood. For algorithms based on Hamiltonian time evolution, we explore this question through the prototypically hard MAX-3-XORSAT problem class. We conclude that the mechanisms for quantum exact and approximation hardness are fundamentally distinct. We review known results from the literature, and identify mechanisms that make conventional quantum methods (such as Adiabatic Quantum Computing) weak approximation algorithms in the worst case. We construct a family of "spectrally filtered" quantum algorithms that escape these issues, and develop analytical theories for their performance. We show that, for random hypergraphs in the approximation-hard regime, if we define the energy to be E = Nunsat - Nsat, spectrally filtered quantum optimization will return states with E ≤ qmEGS (where EGS is the ground state energy) in sub-quadratic time, where conservatively, qm 0.59. This is in contrast to qm → 0 for the hardest instances with classical searches. We test all of these claims with extensive numerical simulations. We do not claim that this approximation guarantee holds for all possible hypergraphs, though our algorithm’s mechanism can likely generalize widely. These results suggest that quantum computers are more powerful for approximate optimization than had been previously assumed. © 2023, CC BY.

Spin optoelectronics is an indispensable key for the future development of spintronics. In conventional spin light emitting diodes (LEDs), spin-polarized carrier pairs are injected electrically into the light emitting layer and create circularly polarized light (CPL). Generally, spin-polarized carriers are accomplished using ferromagnetic contacts or applying an external magnetic field, which will produce several drawbacks, including low temperature operation, low spin-polarized carriers injection efficiency, etc. To circumvent the existing shortcomings, here, an alternative approach is proposed and achieves spin-polarized LEDs at room temperature based on quantum dots (QDs)/chiral metal-organic framework heterojunction without using ferromagnetic contacts or magnetic fields. The spin-polarized injected layer composed of self-assembled monolayer (SAM)/Chiral-MOF ([Sr(9,10-adc)(DMAc)2]n)) film, which produces spin-polarized holes with spin orientation, determining the polarization and strength of circularly polarized electroluminescence (CP-EL). The spin-QLED emits CP-EL at a rate of 12.24% efficiency, which provides an excellent alternative to generate new functionality for conventional QLEDs. The approach is anticipated to be very useful, enabling to offer a general methodology for generating not yet realized spin optoelectronic devices. © 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.

Insulator-metal quantum phase transition in heavy topological insulators

Exponentially localized surface states are the most distinctive property of a crystal with non-trivial band topology. Such surface states play a key role in characterizing topological insulators (TIs), both in theory and experiments. TIs resulting from the hybridization of heavy (or nearly flat) and light (or dispersive) bands are automatically tuned to the vicinity of an insulator-to-metal phase transition (IMT), which is not accompanied by a change in bulk band-topology. By formulating a scaling theory for IMTs in such "heavy" TIs, we show that the proximity to an IMT manifests most dramatically in the behavior of the surface states, viz. (i) the strength of spin-orbital locking is strongly suppressed;(ii) the surface conduction and valence bands support vastly different number of states;(iii) the surface states penetrate deep into the bulk and the penetration depth diverges at the IMT point. Thus, the surface states in heavy TIs coexist with bulk scattered states, and may no longer serve as an useful determinant of their bulk band-topology. The mechanism of degradation of surface states discussed here is generic, and expected to hold in both heavy TIs and semimetals. © 2021, CC BY.

A hurdle to effective science education in schools is often the lack of teaching materials. Teaching science education in the 21st century requires direct visualization and manipulation with effective use and implementation for meaningful learning to occur, thus, unleashing students' potential towards the lesson, boosting their engagement in learning, and applying the knowledge into skills. This study was carried out to develop a do-it-yourself gel electrophoresis apparatus. This study was conducted in Cebu Normal University, Philippines with nineteen (19) teachers from the Methods of Teaching Science and Instructional Trends and Issues Class who evaluated the apparatus in terms of usability and functionality. The respondents tested the Gel Electrophoresis apparatus by conducting the experiment and they evaluated the apparatus' functionality and usability by using an evaluation sheet which is composed of eleven (11) usability questions, four (4) functionality questions. Suggestions were also asked to improve the said apparatus. After gathering data, the suggestions made by the respondents were incorporated which resulted to the improved D.I.Y. Gel Electrophoresis Apparatus. A manual with the procedures was also designed to further guide students and teachers on how to build the apparatus. With the findings and results obtained in the study, the respondents recommended the usage of the developed do-it-yourself gel electrophoresis apparatus in their respective classes and agreed that it is a good source of learning the concept of gel electrophoresis as a 21st century biological technique. The apparatus was easy to set-up and is of low-cost. During experimentation, the apparatus yielded with a positive result - the separation of food dyes which follows the principle of gel electrophoresis. Moreover, the experiment encourages creativity and it helps with the understanding of the nature of DNA and the concept of gel electrophoresis as a 21st century biological skills. ©
