Novae are luminous explosions in close binaries which host a white dwarf and a companion donor star. They are triggered by a thermonuclear runaway when the white dwarf accretes a critical amount of matter from the secondary. Though novae are established as high-energy gamma-ray emitters through observations by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), the origin of the gamma-ray emission, whether it is hadronic or leptonic, had been under intense debate until very recently. RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph) is a well-known recurrent symbiotic nova with a recurrence time scale of 15 years. The most recent outburst of RS Oph in 2021 brought the first detection of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays from a nova ever. The first Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array observed this historic event along with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC. The LST-1 observations in the first days after the burst onset show a clear VHE gamma-ray signal from RS Oph. The low energy threshold of LST-1 allows us to reconstruct the RS Oph gamma-ray spectrum down to ∼30 GeV, providing the best connection of the VHE gamma-ray data to the Fermi LAT energy range. The results from the analysis of the LST-1 observations are consistent with those obtained with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC, and also support a hadronic origin for the observed gamma-ray fluxes. The first prototype of LST (LST-1) for the Cherenkov Telescope Array has been in commissioning phase since 2018 and already started scientific observations with the low energy threshold around a few tens of GeV. In 2021, LST-1 observed BL Lac following the alerts based on multi-wavelength observations and detected prominent gamma-ray flares. In addition to the daily flux variability, LST-1 also detected sub-hour-scale intra-night variability reaching 3–4 times higher than the gamma-ray flux from the Crab Nebula above 100 GeV. Multifunctional Resonant Wavefront-Shaping Meta-Optics Based on Multilayer and Multi-Perturbation Nonlocal Metasurfaces

Photonic devices rarely provide both elaborate spatial control and sharp spectral control over an incoming wavefront. In optical metasurfaces, for example, the localized modes of individual meta-units govern the wavefront shape over a broad bandwidth, while nonlocal lattice modes extended over many unit cells support high quality-factor resonances. Here, we experimentally demonstrate nonlocal dielectric metasurfaces in the near-infrared that offer both spatial and spectral control of light, realizing metalenses focusing light exclusively over a narrowband resonance while leaving off-resonant frequencies unaffected. Our devices attain this functionality by supporting a quasi-bound state in the continuum encoded with a spatially varying geometric phase. We leverage this capability to experimentally realize a versatile platform for multispectral wavefront shaping where a stack of metasurfaces, each supporting multiple independently controlled quasi-bound states in the continuum, molds the optical wavefront distinctively at multiple wavelengths and yet stay transparent over the rest of the spectrum. The ALMA Survey of Star Formation and Evolution in Massive Protoclusters with Blue Profiles (ASSEMBLE) aims to investigate the process of mass assembly and its connection to high-mass star formation theories in protoclusters in a dynamic view. We observed 11 massive (Mclump 103 M☉), luminous (Lbol 104 L☉), and blue-profile (infall signature) clumps by ALMA with resolution of ∼2200–5500 au (median value of 3500 au) at 350 GHz (870 µm). 248 dense cores were identified, including 106 cores showing protostellar signatures and 142 prestellar core candidates. Compared to early-stage infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) by ASHES, the core mass and surface density within the ASSEMBLE clumps exhibited significant increment, suggesting concurrent core accretion during the evolution of the clumps. The maximum mass of prestellar cores was found to be 2 times larger than that in IRDCs, indicating that evolved protoclusters have the potential to harbor massive prestellar cores. The mass relation between clumps and their most massive core (MMCs) is observed in ASSEMBLE but not in IRDCs, which is suggested to be regulated by multiscale mass accretion. The mass correlation between the core clusters and their MMCs has a steeper slope compared to that observed in stellar clusters, which can be due to fragmentation of the MMC and stellar multiplicity. We observe a decrease in core separation and an increase in central concentration as protoclusters evolve. We confirm primordial mass segregation in the ASSEMBLE protoclusters, possibly resulting from gravitational concentration and/or gas accretion. © 2023, CC BY.

A cosmological basis for E = mc2

The Universe has a gravitational horizon with a radius Rh = c/H coincident with that of the Hubble sphere. This surface separates null geodesics approaching us from those receding, and as free-falling observers within the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime, we see it retreating at proper speed c, giving rise to the eponymously named cosmological model Rh = ct. As of today, this cosmology has passed over 20 observational tests, often better than ΛCDM. The gravitational radius Rh therefore appears to be highly relevant to cosmological theory, and in this paper we begin to explore its impact on fundamental physics. We calculate the binding energy of a mass m within the horizon and demonstrate that it is equal to mc2. This energy is stored when the particle is at rest near the observer, transitioning to a purely kinetic form equal to the particle’s escape energy when it approaches Rh. In other words, a particle’s gravitational coupling to that portion of the Universe with which it is causally connected appears to be the origin of rest-mass energy. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Quantum fluctuations at the Planck scale

The recently measured cutoff, kmin = 4.34 ± 0.50/rcmb (with rcmb the comoving distance to the last scattering surface), in the fluctuation spectrum of the cosmic microwave background, appears to disfavor slow-roll inflation and the associated transition of modes across the horizon. We show in this Letter that kmin instead corresponds to the first mode emerging out of the Planck domain into the semi-classical universe. The required scalar-field potential is exponential, though not inflationary, and satisfies the zero active mass condition, ρφ + 3pφ = 0. Quite revealingly, the observed amplitude of the temperature anisotropies requires the quantum fluctuations in φ to have classicalized at ∼ 3.5 × 1015 GeV, consistent with the energy scale in grand unified theories. Such scalar-field potentials are often associated with Kaluza-Klein cosmologies, string theory and even supergravity. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We present high angular-resolution measurements of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect (SZE) toward two galaxy clusters, RCS J2319+0038 at z = 0.9 and HSC J0947−0119 at z = 1.1, by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Band 3. They are supplemented with available Chandra X-ray data, optical data taken by Hyper Suprime-Cam on Subaru, and millimeter-wave SZE data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope. Taking into account departures from spherical symmetry, we have reconstructed non-parametrically the inner pressure profile of two clusters as well as electron temperature and density profiles for RCS J2319+0038. This is one of the first such measurements for an individual cluster at z >∼ 0.9. We find that the inner pressure profile of both clusters is much shallower than that of local cool-core clusters. Our results consistently suggest that RCS J2319+0038 hosts a weak cool core, where radiative cooling is less significant than in local cool cores. On the other hand, HSC J0947−0119 exhibits an even shallower pressure profile than RCS J2319+0038 and is more likely a non-cool-core cluster. The SZE centroid position is offset by more than 140 h−170kpc from the peaks of galaxy distribution in HSC J0947−0119, suggesting a stronger influence of mergers in this cluster. We conclude that these distant clusters are at a very early stage of developing the cool cores typically found in clusters at lower redshifts. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Context. Among the blazars whose emission has been detected up to very-high-energy (VHE;100 GeV 14 δD cm to the size of the emission region responsible for the γ-ray flare, δD being the relativistic Doppler factor of the region. During the 2020 high state, the average spectrum became harder in the HE γ-ray band compared to the low states. A similar behaviour has been observed in X rays. Conversely, during different activity periods, we find harder-when-brighter trends in X rays and a hint of softer-when-brighter trends at HE γ rays. Long-term HE γ-ray and optical correlation indicates the same emission regions dominate the radiative output in both ranges, whereas the evolution at 15 GHz shows no correlation with the fluxes at higher frequencies. We test one-zone and two-zone synchrotron-self-Compton models for describing the broad-band spectral energy distribution during the 2020 flaring state and investigate the self-consistency of the proposed scenario. We report on the observations of the quasar NRAO 530 with the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) on 2017 April 5−7, when NRAO 530 was used as a calibrator for the EHT observations of Sagittarius A∗. At z = 0.902 this is the most distant object imaged by the EHT so far. We reconstruct the first images of the source at 230 GHz, at an unprecedented angular resolution of ∼ 20 µas, both in total intensity and in linear polarization. We do not detect source variability, allowing us to represent the whole data set with static images. The images reveal a bright feature located on the southern end of the jet, which we associate with the core. The feature is linearly polarized, with a fractional polarization of ∼5-8% and has a sub-structure consisting of two components. Their observed brightness temperature suggests that the energy density of the jet is dominated by the magnetic field. The jet extends over 60 µas along a position angle PA∼ −28◦. It includes two features with orthogonal directions of polarization (electric vector position angle, EVPA), parallel and perpendicular to the jet axis, consistent with a helical structure of the magnetic field in the jet. The outermost feature has a particularly high degree of linear polarization, suggestive of a nearly uniform magnetic field. Future EHT observations will probe the variability of the jet structure on µas scales, while simultaneous multi-wavelength monitoring will provide insight into the high energy emission origin. © 2023, CC BY.
