A search is performed for localized excesses in the low-mass dijet invariant mass distribution, targeting a hypothetical new particle decaying into two jets and produced in association with either a high transverse momentum photon or a jet. The search uses the full Run 2 data sample from LHC proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV during 2015–2018. Two variants of the search are presented for each type of initial-state radiation: one that makes no jet flavor requirements and one that requires both of the jets to have been identified as containing b-hadrons. No excess is observed relative to the Standard Model prediction, and the data are used to set upper limits on the production cross section for a benchmark Z′ model and, separately, for generic, beyond the Standard Model scenarios which might produce a Gaussian-shaped contribution to dijet invariant mass distributions. The results extend the current constraints on dijet resonances to the mass range between 200 and 650 GeV.

A search is presented for the pair production of heavy vectorlike quarks (VLQs) that each decay into a W boson and a light quark. This study focuses on events where one W boson decays into leptons and the other into hadrons. The search analyzed 140 fb−1 of pp collision data with s=13 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018 during run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. The final state is characterized by a high-transverse-momentum isolated electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum, multiple small-radius jets, and a single large-radius jet identified as originating from the hadronic decay of a boosted W boson. With higher center-of-mass energy and integrated luminosity than in the run 1 search, and improved analysis tools, this analysis excludes VLQs (Q) with masses below 1530 GeV at 95% confidence level for the branching ratio B(Q→Wq)=1, an improvement of 840 GeV on the previous ATLAS limit.

The influence of intrinsic defects of 1T-TaS2 on charge density waves (CDW) is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM, STS), angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), and density functional theory (DFT). We identify several types of structural defects and find that most have a local character limited to the single CDW site, with single exception which effectively behaves as a dopant, leading to band bending and affecting multiple neighboring sites. While only one type of defect can be observed by STM topographic imaging, all defects are easily resolved by local density of states (LDOS) mapping with STS. We correlate atomically-resolved STM periodicity of defect-free 1T-TaS2 to top sulfur atoms and introduce tiling of the surface using equiangular hexagon. DFT calculations (with included Coulomb interactions) are used to investigate the electronic structure by introducing sulfur vacancy or substituting sulfur with oxygen. The sulfur vacancy is characterized by metallic properties and is identified as an origin of one of observed experimentally defects. Whereas in the case of the latter, the oxidation of 1T-TaS2 is found to result in the loss of magnetic properties expected in defect-free material. © 2023, CC0.

We have demonstrated ultrastrong and superstrong coupling of a Landau-quantized two-dimensional electron gas in GaAs with a multiple-mode three-dimensional terahertz photonic-crystal cavity. The cavity had an asymmetric design such that the real-space profiles of photonic modes depended on the electric field polarization. Terahertz magnetospectroscopy experiments with polarized radiation clearly showed that the degree of hybridization of multiple cavity modes is a function of the spatial overlap of the photonic modes. These findings can be utilized for the dynamical tuning of multimode light–matter interactions, which can lead to the development of novel terahertz devices.

A search for the nonresonant production of Higgs boson pairs in the HH→bb¯τ+τ− channel is performed using 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The analysis strategy is optimized to probe anomalous values of the Higgs boson self-coupling modifier κλ and of the quartic HHVV (V=W,Z) coupling modifier κ2V. No significant excess above the expected background from Standard Model processes is observed. An observed (expected) upper limit μHH<5.9(3.3) is set at 95% confidence-level on the Higgs boson pair production cross section normalized to its Standard Model prediction. The coupling modifiers are constrained to an observed (expected) 95% confidence interval of −3.1<κλ<9.0 (−2.5<κλ<9.3) and −0.5<κ2V<2.7 (−0.2<κ2V<2.4), assuming all other Higgs boson couplings are fixed to the Standard Model prediction. The results are also interpreted in the context of effective field theories via constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings and Higgs boson pair production cross sections assuming different kinematic benchmark scenarios.

Stable and High Current Emission of Electrons from a Hfc Nanoneedle Field-Emitter Fabricated by Focused Ion Beam

HfC nanoneedle with both excellent electron emission characteristics and robust structure is regarded as a potential candidate for field-emission point electron sources, especially for applications desiring a high emission current. Herewith we report successful fabrication of HfC nanoneedle emitter by focused ion beam (FIB) and its characterization. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) examinations show that the HfC nanoneedle has a sharp tip with a curvature of radius of about 20 nm and the structure remains single crystalline aligned in direction. The HfC nanoneedle emitter has a low work function of 3.2 eV, and delivers a convergent beam with a low turn-on field of 2.7 V/nm (at emission current of 2 nA) and threshold field of 3.5 V/nm (at emission current of 50 nA), respectively. The HfC nanoneedle emitter also exhibits an excellent emission stability with a fluctuation of 1.4%/30 min and 1.5%/15 min under a normal current (50 nA) and high current (280 nA), respectively. © 2023, The Authors. Searches for new resonances are performed using an unsupervised anomaly-detection technique. Events with at least one electron or muon are selected from 140 fb−1 of pp collisions at s=13 TeV recorded by ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. The approach involves training an autoencoder on data, and subsequently defining anomalous regions based on the reconstruction loss of the decoder. Studies focus on nine invariant mass spectra that contain pairs of objects consisting of one light jet or b jet and either one lepton (e,μ), photon, or second light jet or b jet in the anomalous regions. No significant deviations from the background hypotheses are observed. Limits on contributions from generic Gaussian signals with various widths of the resonance mass are obtained for nine invariant masses in the anomalous regions.

Measurements of the substructure of top-quark jets are presented, using 140 fb−1 of 13 TeV pp collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Top-quark jets reconstructed with the anti-kt algorithm with a radius parameter R=1.0 are selected in top-quark pair (tt¯) events where one top quark decays semileptonically and the other hadronically, or where both top quarks decay hadronically. The top-quark jets are required to have transverse momentum pT>350 GeV, yielding large samples of data events with jet pT values between 350 and 600 GeV. One- and two-dimensional differential cross sections for eight substructure variables, defined using only the charged components of the jets, are measured in a particle-level phase space by correcting for the smearing and acceptance effects induced by the detector. The differential cross sections are compared with the predictions of several Monte Carlo simulations in which top-quark pair-production quantum chromodynamic matrix-element calculations at next-to-leading-order precision in the strong coupling constant αS are passed to leading-order parton shower and hadronization generators. The Monte Carlo predictions for measures of the broadness, and also the two-body structure, of the top-quark jets are found to be in good agreement with the measurements, while variables sensitive to the three-body structure of the top-quark jets exhibit some tension with the measured distributions.

Topological transport of fermions is governed by the Chern numbers of the energy bands lying below the Fermi energy. For bosons, e.g., phonons and magnons in a crystal, topological transport is dominated by the Chern number of the lowest energy band when the bandgap is comparable with the thermal energy. Here, we demonstrate the presence of topological transport by bosonic magnons in a lattice of magnetic skyrmions—topological defects formed by a vortexlike texture of spins. We find a distinct thermal Hall signal in the magnetic skyrmion phase of an insulating polar magnet GaV4Se8, identified as the topological thermal Hall effect of magnons governed by the Chern number of the lowest energy band of the magnons in a triangular lattice of magnetic skyrmions. Our findings lay a foundation for studying topological phenomena of other bosonic excitations via thermal Hall probe.

The prototype Large-Sized Telescope (LST-1) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) is in commissioning phase at the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos at 2200 m a.s.l. in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). LST-1 is a 23-m diameter telescope and is the first of four that will compose the LST part of the CTAO Northern array. The LST subarray is optimized to provide the best sensitivity for gamma rays in the 20 GeV - 200 GeV energy range. The MAGIC telescopes, which are located approximately 100 m from the LST-1, is operating as a two 17-m telescope stereoscopic system for more than 14 years. LST-1 and MAGIC routinely perform joint observations of gamma-ray sources to exploit the potential of the three-telescope system. This contribution describes the analysis pipeline and evaluates the performance of the system using Monte Carlo simulations and data on the Crab Nebula. The sensitivity achieved during joint observations with MAGIC and LST-1 is about 30% higher than that of MAGIC alone. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.
