We present JWST NIRCam imaging of B14-65666 ("Big Three Dragons"), a bright Lyman-break galaxy system (MUV = −22.5 mag) at z = 7.15. The high angular resolution of NIRCam reveals the complex morphology of two galaxy components: galaxy E has a compact core (E-core), surrounded by diffuse, extended, rest-frame optical emission, which is likely to be tidal tails;and galaxy W has a clumpy and elongated morphology with a blue UV slope (βUV = −2.2±0.1). The flux excess, F356W−F444W, peaks at the E-core (1.05+0.08−009 mag), tracing the presence of strong [O III]λλ4960,5008 Å emission. ALMA archival data show that the bluer galaxy W is brighter in dust continua than the redder galaxy E, while the tails are bright in [O III] 88 µm. The UV/optical and sub-mm SED fitting confirms that B14-65666 is a major merger in a starburst phase as derived from the stellar mass ratio (3:1 to 2:1) and the star-formation rate, 1 dex higher than the star-formation main sequence at the same redshift. The galaxy E is a dusty (AV = 1.2 ± 0.1 mag) starburst with a possible high dust temperature (≥ 63–68 K). The galaxy W would have a low dust temperature (≤ 27–33 K) or patchy stellar-and-dust geometry, as suggested from the infrared excess (IRX) and βUV diagram. The high optical-to-FIR [O III] line ratio of the E-core shows its lower gas-phase metallicity ( 0.2–0.4 Z☉) than the galaxy W. These results agree with a scenario where major mergers disturb morphology and induce nuclear dusty starbursts triggered by less-enriched inflows. Recent millimeter/sub-millimeter facilities have revealed the physical properties of filamentary molecular clouds in relation to high-mass star formation. A uniform survey of the nearest, face-on star-forming galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), complements the Galactic knowledge. We present ALMA survey data with a spatial resolution of ∼0.1 pc in the 0.87 mm continuum and HCO+(4–3) emission toward 30 protostellar objects with luminosities of 104–105.5 L☉ in the LMC. The spatial distributions of the HCO+(4–3) line and thermal dust emission are well correlated, indicating that the line effectively traces dense, filamentary gas with an H2 volume density of 105 cm−3 and a line mass of ∼103–104 M☉ pc−1. Furthermore, we obtain an increase in the velocity linewidths of filamentary clouds, which follows a power-law dependence on their H2 column densities with an exponent of ∼0.5. This trend is consistent with observations toward filamentary clouds in nearby star-forming regions withiin 1 kpc from us and suggests enhanced internal turbulence within the filaments owing to surrounding gas accretion. Among the 30 sources, we find that 14 are associated with hub-filamentary structures, and these complex structures predominantly appear in protostellar luminosities exceeding ∼5 ×104 L☉. The hub-filament systems tend to appear in the latest stages of their natal cloud evolution, often linked to prominent H ii regions and numerous stellar clusters. Our preliminary statistics suggest that the massive filaments accompanied by hub-type complex features may be a necessary intermediate product in forming extremely luminous high-mass stellar systems capable of ultimately dispersing the parent cloud. © 2023, CC BY.

We present photometric, spectroscopic and polarimetric observations of the intermediate-luminosity Type IIP supernova (SN) 2021gmj from 1 to 386 days after the explosion. The peak absolute V-band magnitude of SN 2021gmj is −15.5 mag, which is fainter than that of normal Type IIP SNe. The spectral evolution of SN 2021gmj resembles that of other sub-luminous supernovae: the optical spectra show narrow P-Cygni profiles, indicating a low expansion velocity. We estimate the progenitor mass to be about 12 M☉ from the nebular spectrum and the 56Ni mass to be about 0.02 M☉ from the bolometric light curve. We also derive the explosion energy to be about 3×1050 erg by comparing numerical light curve models with the observed light curves. Polarization in the plateau phase is not very large, suggesting nearly spherical outer envelope. The early photometric observations capture the rapid rise of the light curve, which is likely due to the interaction with a circumstellar material (CSM). The broad emission feature formed by highly-ionized lines on top of a blue continuum in the earliest spectrum gives further indication of the CSM at the vicinity of the progenitor. Our work suggests that a relatively low-mass progenitor of an intermediate-luminosity Type IIP SN can also experience an enhanced mass loss just before the explosion, as suggested for normal Type IIP SNe. © 2024, CC BY.

The Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV), a proposed consequence of certain quantum gravity (QG) scenarios, could instigate an energy-dependent group velocity for ultra-relativistic particles. This energy dependence, although suppressed by the massive QG energy scale EQG, expected to be on the level of the Planck energy 1.22 × 1019 GeV, is potentially detectable in astrophysical observations. In this scenario, the cosmological distances traversed by photons act as an amplifier for this effect. By leveraging the observation of a remarkable flare from the blazar Mrk 421, recorded at energies above 100 GeV by the MAGIC telescopes on the night of April 25 to 26, 2014, we look for time delays scaling linearly and quadratically with the photon energies. Using for the first time in LIV studies a binned-likelihood approach we set constraints on the QG energy scale. For the linear scenario, we set 95% lower limits EQG > 2.7×1017 GeV for the subluminal case and EQG > 3.6×1017 GeV for the superluminal case. For the quadratic scenario, the 95% lower limits for the subluminal and superluminal cases are EQG > 2.6 × 1010 GeV and EQG > 2.5 × 1010 GeV, respectively. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. The yield of charged particles opposite to a Z boson with large transverse momentum (pT) is measured in 260 pb−1 of pp and 1.7 nb−1 of Pb+Pb collision data at 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The Z boson tag is used to select hard-scattered partons with specific kinematics, and to observe how their showers are modified as they propagate through the quark-gluon plasma created in Pb+Pb collisions. Compared with pp collisions, charged-particle yields in Pb+Pb collisions show significant modifications as a function of charged-particle pT in a way that depends on event centrality and Z boson pT. The data are compared with a variety of theoretical calculations and provide new information about the medium-induced energy loss of partons in a pT regime difficult to measure through other channels.

In April 2020, KAGRA conducted its first science observation in combination with the GEO 600 detector (O3GK) for two weeks. According to the noise budget estimation, suspension control noise in the low frequency band and acoustic noise in the middle frequency band are identified as the dominant contribution. In this study, we show that such noise can be reduced in offline data analysis by utilizing a method called Independent Component Analysis (ICA). Here the ICA model is extended from the one studied in iKAGRA data analysis by incorporating frequency dependence while linearity and stationarity of the couplings are still assumed. By using optimal witness sensors, those two dominant contributions are mitigated in the real observational data. We also analyze the stability of the transfer functions for whole two weeks data in order to investigate how the current subtraction method can be practically used in gravitational wave search. The first measurement of longitudinal decorrelations of harmonic flow amplitudes vn for n=2–4 in Xe+Xe collisions at sNN=5.44 TeV is obtained using 3 μb−1 of data with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The decorrelation signal for v3 and v4 is found to be nearly independent of collision centrality and transverse momentum (pT) requirements on final-state particles, but for v2 a strong centrality and pT dependence is seen. When compared with the results from Pb+Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV, the longitudinal decorrelation signal in midcentral Xe+Xe collisions is found to be larger for v2, but smaller for v3. Current hydrodynamic models reproduce the ratios of the vn measured in Xe+Xe collisions to those in Pb+Pb collisions but fail to describe the magnitudes and trends of the ratios of longitudinal flow decorrelations between Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb. The results on the system-size dependence provide new insights and an important lever arm to separate effects of the longitudinal structure of the initial state from other early and late time effects in heavy-ion collisions.

As part of the B-fields In Star-forming Region Observations survey, we present James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) 850 μm polarimetric observations toward the Orion integral-shaped filament (ISF) that covers three portions known as OMC-1, OMC-2, and OMC-3. The magnetic field threading the ISF seen in the JCMT POL-2 map appears as a tale of three: pinched for OMC-1, twisted for OMC-2, and nearly uniform for OMC-3. A multiscale analysis shows that the magnetic field structure in OMC-3 is very consistent at all the scales, whereas the field structure in OMC-2 shows no correlation across different scales. In OMC-1, the field retains its mean orientation from large to small scales but shows some deviations at small scales. Histograms of relative orientations between the magnetic field and filaments reveal a bimodal distribution for OMC-1, a relatively random distribution for OMC-2, and a distribution with a predominant peak at 90^o for OMC-3. Furthermore, the magnetic fields in OMC-1 and OMC-3 both appear to be aligned perpendicular to the fibers, which are denser structures within the filament, but the field in OMC-2 is aligned along with the fibers. All these suggest that gravity, turbulence, and magnetic field are each playing a leading role in OMC-1, 2, and 3, respectively. While OMC-2 and 3 have almost the same gas mass, density, and nonthermal velocity dispersion, there are on average younger and fewer young stellar objects in OMC-3, providing evidence that a stronger magnetic field will induce slower and less efficient star formation in molecular clouds. © 2024. The supernova remnant (SNR) G106.3+2.7 associated with a 100 TeV gamma-ray source reported by HAWC, Tibet ASγ, and LHAASO Collaborations is one of the promising PeVatron candidates. Because the SNR contains an energetic pulsar wind nebula (PWN) dubbed Boomerang powered by the pulsar PSR J2229+6114, it is unclear whether the gamma-ray emission originates from the SNR or PWN complex and whether it is caused by hadronic or leptonic processes. We observed gamma rays above 200 GeV in the vicinity of the SNR G106.3+2.7 using the MAGIC telescopes for total ∼ 120 hours between May 2017 and August 2019 with an angular resolution of 0.07-0.10 degrees, achieving an unprecedented exposure for this object at these energies. An extended gamma-ray emission spatially correlated with the radio continuum emission at the head and tail of SNR G106.3+2.7 was detected using the MAGIC telescopes. We found a significant gamma-ray emission above 5.65 TeV only from the SNR tail region, while no significant emission in the same band is found at the SNR head region containing the Boomerang PWN. Therefore, the gamma rays above 10 TeV detected with the air shower experiments are, likely, mainly emitted from the SNR tail region. On 14th January 2019, the MAGIC collaboration achieved the first significant detection at TeV energies of a gamma-ray burst (GRB), namely GRB 190114C. This observation sets the first experimental proof of very high energy (VHE, > 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission in GRBs, after more than 50 years from the first GRB detection and many searches with Cherenkov telescopes in the last decades. The data collected by MAGIC and by more than 20 other ground-based and space-borne instruments, spanning 17 orders of magnitude in energy, revealed a new GeV-TeV emission component in the GRB afterglow. This unprecedented multi-wavelength dataset, including VHE data for the first time, allowed a detailed study of the broadband emission. A one-zone synchrotron-self Compton scenario with internal γ-γ absorption could be used to describe the broadband emission, using parameters compatible with those found in previous studies of GRB afterglows below the GeV energy range. This detection opened a new era in the studies of GRBs, leading to new questions such as the universality of TeV emission in different types of GRBs. In this contribution, we will present the GRB follow-up program performed by the MAGIC collaboration, which started more than 15 years ago.
