This study aims to determine the factors to assess the habitability of the modernized Korean traditional housing complex called New-Hanok Village and examine evaluation methods for its components in aspects of the urban planning. To determine the specificity of New-Hanok Village, it is necessary to assess major factors towards the habitability such as Feng-Shui and Yin-Yang. Five design elements of contemporary Hanok residential complex and their characteristics have been investigated to respond to needs of modern people with defining assessment factors derived from the VE(Value Engineering) operation by the evaluation system for the habitability. Through this process, the value of the New-Hanok Village could be settled and its data could be classified. In addition, it would be possible that designers can make decisions quickly by offering necessary plans and element details, while builders would be able to reduce cost and shorten construction period by the whole VE process.

The purpose of this study is to suggest a physical comfort factor of Korean traditional residences called Hanok, and to make a composition of the monitoring system for comfort factors. For this study Hanok's degree of integrative comfort was analyzed and comfort performance has been classified. Comfort performance was divided into two large comfort performance categories: psychology cognitive factors and physical perception factors. In this research, composition of monitoring system for physical comfort performance is a key goal, so this study proposed a method of the monitoring system for physical perception factors. As a result, it is turned that the proposed system would have a pretty good applicability to the field.

Centarea maculosa Lam. (spotted knapweed) is one of the most destructive invasive weeds in the western United States, particularly in pastures and rangelands. One of the components that may contribute to its invasiveness is the naturally produced, root-secreted allelochemical (−)-catechin. This compound has been shown to have broad-spectrum phytotoxic activity, possibly assisting C. maculosa in displacing native plant communities. As a recently characterized phytochemical, little is known about the specific effect of (−)-catechin on either C. maculosa or other plant species. We have found that, in vitro, C. maculosa begins to secrete phytotoxic levels of (−)-catechin within 2–3 weeks of seedling emergence. Furthermore, (−)-catechin concentrations consistent with those naturally secreted by C. maculosa were sufficient to inhibit germination in all species tested, including C. maculosa. These concentrations were also often either phytotoxic or growth inhibitory to seedlings in a range of plant species, while having no negative effects on the growth of C. maculosa seedlings. However, our results also indicate that different levels of resistance and susceptibility to (−)-catechin exist in plant populations, suggesting that the capability of C. maculosa to invade an area through allelochemistry may be dependent on the age and species composition of plants in that area.

Compared to burn interiors, edges exhibit distinct biotic and abiotic conditions that include microclimate, wind speed, sunlight levels, soil composition, moisture content, nutrient availability, population density, and species diversity. This study characterized the landscapes in which burned forest edges formed in Samcheok, Korea. Over the study area, 500-m2 grid cells were generated to capture landscape characteristics. Grid cells intersecting burn boundary lines were designated as edge, while cells without these lines were classified as the interior of burned areas. Topographic variables including slope, elevation, topographic wetness index, solar radiation index, and proportions of fuel and land use types within grid cells were computed in a geographical information system(GIS). Correlation analysis with modified t-test and regression tree analysis were performed to explore the influences of landscape variables on edge formation with avoiding spatial autocorrelation problems. The results indicated that edges formed at low elevations with mild slopes, high topographic wetness, and low solar radiation. Edges were unlikely to form in areas dominated by Japanese red pines at low elevations. Moreover, heterogeneous land use/cover types contributed significantly to edge formation. Different forest management strategies for different landscape conditions can be more effective for enhancing resilience of forests to fire. Reducing susceptible fuel types might be effective at low elevations, while enhancing forest heterogeneity might be more effective at high elevations.
