Wind-driven rain incidence parameters obtained by hygrothermal simulation

The association of rain and wind composes wind-driven rain (WDR), and its incidence may be crucial to the emergence of anomalies on the facades of buildings. Moisture from the WDR can influence the humidification and drying process, therefore the durability and hygrothermal performance are conditioned by the amount of incident water. The quantification of WDR can be an indispensable tool for understanding its related phenomena and the service life of buildings. The most widely used methods of quantification are the semi-empirical, with theoretical basis, but coefficients partially determined from measurements. These methods may take into account the building exposure conditions related to the envelope, solar orientation, height of the building, and other parameters. In this context, in order to contribute to the studies on quantification of WDR, the purpose of this paper is to apply hygrothermal simulation software WUFI^® on quantification of WDR focusing on buildings degradation of Brasília-Brazil. For the simulation it was used a Typical Meteorological Year file with the wind and precipitation measurement data indispensable for simulation. The quantification of incidence of WDR considered the orientations North, Northeast, East, Southeast, South, Southwest, West, and Northwest. The use of semi-empirical WUFI^® quantification method allowed finding the highest values and consequently critical orientations North, Northwest, and Northeast, moreover, this results showed the relation with the degradation of facades in these orientations. WUFI proved to be an easy, fast and efficient method of WDR quantification, without hiding seasonal weather effects. © 2016, Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

This article argues that the integration of art and planning has been inadequately developed, and calls for a renewed exploration of their inter-connection. City planning has had a variable relationship with art, moving between organic, civic minded ideals, and despotic notions of grandeur. Yet, rather than eschewing this history as nostalgic or irrelevant, there are ways in which a connection can be made between planning and art—if art is defined in a particular way. To accomplish this, it is necessary to first recognize that in the history of the human attempt to design cities, the loss of a connection between city planning and art is relatively recent. It is argued that the lost connection is in part a result of a rejection of modernist notions of urbanism. Spanning the history of city planning and city making, the notion of planning as art was in evidence until the mid-20th century, about the time when modernist spatial ideas took hold. It is argued that divorcing all notions of art from city planning practice and theoretical development has been detrimental to the profession. The relevance of art to city planning needs to be reinvigorated, but this will require new ways of thinking, an acceptance of traditionalism broadly defined, and may entail new conceptions about the merger of planning with recent cultural and even scientific theory. © 2004 Taylor & Francis Ltd.

Borobudur Temple, as a cultural heritage, experiences unavoidable damage from degradation, human activities, and disasters. These problems must be resolved by considering the form and value of Borobudur Temple for future generations. This research aims to reconstruct cultural heritage by focusing on the case study of the Kijang Sarabha relief at Borobudur Temple. Digital restoration has previously been conducted by the Borobudur Conservation Center using 3D photogrammetry laser scanning technology. This restoration effort will continue with the goal of sustainability. The research is practical in design and utilizes a black box process framework method, which consists of the following steps: inputting the 3D photogrammetry of the relief, analyzing literature, references, and documentation within the black box, and outputting the reconstructed deer relief object. The result of this research is a digital reconstruction of the Kijang Sarabha relief, which could serve as a recommendation for digital reconstruction processes for other cultural heritage objects. The techniques used not only rely on initial 3D photogrammetry data but also include 3D modeling techniques such as displacement mapping, pro cutter 3D, and texturing. This research can serve as a reference for further studies on the restoration and reconstruction of cultural heritage using 3D digital design technology.

This research aims to generate architectural design recommendations based on the visual reconstruction of the Lalitavistara reliefs from Borobudur, addressing the urgent need for building designs that retain the distinctive character of Nusantara architecture. The proposed design is intended for application in Ibukota Nusantara Indonesia, integrating smart city and green city approaches while featuring a unique visual style that incorporates historical artifacts. This need arises from the current trend of building designs in Ibukota Nusantara Indonesia, which predominantly adopt an international style and lack the unique elements of Nusantara architecture. To address this, the research adopts a project-based methodology, utilizing blueprints derived from reconstructed Lalitavistara relief panels, developed through 3D modeling and further enhanced by digital imaging with the assistance of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The expected outcome of this study is to provide a method for designing buildings that showcase a distinctive Nusantara-Indonesian style, along with recommendations for a digital design workflow supported by AI to finalize 3D modeling visuals.

Field experiences have been included as class activities in many engineering curricula. Students gain an understanding and appreciation from "real world" applications of topics and theories learned in the classroom. In the past, most of these field experiences have been limited to specific courses and conducted for just a few hours within easy travel distance from a university. The Department of Civil Engineering at North Dakota State University developed a field experience course that takes students to China to gain first hand knowledge on civil engineering design and construction practice, to learn the history of civil engineering and cultural influences on engineering practice, and to have an education/cultural exchange with Chinese students. In collaboration with the Beijing Institute of Civil Engineering and architecture (BICEA), twelve senior level students and two faculty members visited China in spring 2005. The class visited Beijing, the Three Gorges area of Yangtze River, and Shanghai to observe and inspect specific sites and projects, including the Three Gorges Dam and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games main stadium construction sites, as they relate to the civil engineering and construction education. In Beijing, the class stayed on the campus of BICEA. In addition to campus visit, a mini-conference was organized for American and Chinese students to present their curricula and extra-curricula activities, their campus life, and to have small group discussion. In addition, students were exposed to the cultural and historical implications of engineering education, project planning and design, as well as construction decisions and methods. A course evaluation of the course showed that students have gained better understanding of global perspectives of civil engineering and culture influence on engineering designs, learned what they could never learn in regular classes through site visits and meeting with Chinese students, and enjoyed opportunity for providing input

Sign-Language is to help people with hearing or speaking disabilities who are not able to communicate well with other people. Communicating with deaf people is a challenge for some speakers and people who do not know sign language. What the study proposed is to help people with such disabilities using the American Sign-Language with the corresponding hand gesture. Deaf individuals will be able to communicate or interact with other people conveniently. The study proposed hand gesture or hand sign language detection trained by using the YOLOv3 algorithm that aims to detect hand gestures or hand sign language that can recognize its equivalent letter alphabet. The study tools such as LabelImg for annotating the data set, categorizing each image of hand gestures based on their equivalent letter alphabet. In this study, Model 18 with 95.1804% training accuracy, 90.8242% validation accuracy, and mAP of 0.8275 is used for the final testing. As video with different hand gestures is presented, the results of every hand gesture detected range over 90%. © 2021 IEEE.

Window displays, as a part of selling strategies, not only convey the type and positioning of mechanize, but also the promotional strategies and corporate images. The study uses window displays for clothing to examine patterns, selling strategies, merchandize types, and target groups. It investigates the effects of design elements on the customers perceptual responding to configurations. The theoretical framework bases on marketing concepts, visual perception principles, Gestalt psychology, and design's principle and elements. Research found that 14 factors in the design affected to perception. The study perception indicates that purchasing desire and attraction had more relation.

Determination and Removal of Endocrine Disruptors in Wastewater by Activated Carbon

This study aimed to evaluate the EDC （endocrine disruptors compounds） in the city of Sao Paulo＇s water sources, from samples collected at predetermined sampling points and to evaluate the adsorptive capacity of these compounds in different types of activated carbon. The effects of these EDC on humans are not well established due to the necessary large exposure time for the effect＇s manifestation. After tests using powdered and granular activated carbon, all samples were filtered under vacuum using cellulose acetate membrane （0.45 μm） to remove eventual impurities, and posteriorly carded out the solid-phase extraction SPE （solid-phase extraction） and chromatographic analysis. The results lead to the conclusion that both powdered activated carbon have removal effectiveness of these compounds by adsorption. Furthermore, great amount of endocrine disruptors were found at several sampling points in river and city＇s water reservoirs, which shows different levels of pollution of water sources, some of them responsible for the watersupply of the city of Silo Paulo, Brazil.

Adaptive thermal comfort guidelines have been developed within the work of Annex 69: "Strategy and practice of adaptive thermal comfort in low energy buildings". The guidelines have been established based on a framework for adopting adaptive thermal comfort principles in building design and operation developed by the authors. The guidelines target building practitioners, addressing the critical interrelated role building planners, building operators and occupants play. A successful adaptive thermal comfort design, in which design for human thermal adaptation is foreseen, planned, and carefully embedded in the design and operation intent, is based on broad knowledge and understanding of the multiple quantifiable and non-quantifiable factors influencing human perception, as well as human building interaction. Adaptive building design follows a user-centric integrated design approach and therefore it is critical to consider the occupants' and the operators' role in buildings already in the design phase. This paper focuses on three main challenges identified earlier and how these are addressed in the guidelines, i.e. i) updating prevailing knowledge about human thermophysiology and adaptation, ii) developing a procedure for design of adaptive opportunities, and iii) providing guidance for operational planning and operation of adaptive buildings. The challenge for future research remains to assess the magnitude of how specific design decisions affect particular adaptive mechanisms. © 2020 11th Windsor Conference: Resilient Comfort, WINDSOR 2020 - Proceedings. The purpose of this study is to suggest a standard comfort features presented on the consideration of the traditional houses, called Hanok in Korea. In addition, this paper is to build a diversified, integrated evaluation system considering traditional, aesthetic and psychological values. For this study, the degree of integrative comfort was analyzed and comfort performance has been classified. Comfort performance was divided into two large comfort performance categories: physical and psychological. For this research, survey data from residents were collected for evaluating psychological comfort. Existing relevant studies about comfort evaluation system were driven to reveal the quantitative comfort elements of the suggested classification system. This study also contains a qualitative in-depth analysis of the comfort factor and will examine the effect of those elements. This study has finally proposed an integrated comfort evaluation system that can evaluate over inhabitants of the interior environmental conditions and surveys. As a result, the proposed system will have to be turned on quite good applicability in the field.
