If a neighbourhood is designed and built according to best practices for walkable neighbourhood design, will people respond and walk in the public realm? This was a narrowly focused case study of a brownfield redevelo...

An important element of architectural acoustic design is the prediction and mitigation of modal effects. Modal effects can create undesirable aural phenomena, especially in smaller rooms. The use of Bayesian methods for spectrum analysis was pioneered originally in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. A time-domain model may be used with methods of Bayesian inference to analogously analyze room modes, accounting for frequency, amplitude, damping, and phase. Bayesian model selection can be used to determine the number of modes present in the signal, while simultaneously estimating the associated modal parameters. Accuracy of the method is demonstrated using simulated data, addressing scenarios like well-spaced modes, overlapping modes, and unevenly damped degenerate modes. Then, the method's usefulness is demonstrated by running it against real, measured impulse responses. Finally, the Bayesian model-based approach is compared to more standard frequency-domain analyses.

Visualizations based on a diffusion equation model are presented for transient sound energy in a two coupled-room system. Animations of time-dependent energy flow directions visualize the energy flows across coupled spaces. Particularly, the sound energy feedback is identified through the energy flow direction changes when the coupled room is more reverberant than the main room. This study reveals a "reversal" characteristic of energy flow directions which seems to be dependent on the size and the location of the aperture. Through Bayesian decay analysis and sound energy flow modeling, this work also discloses that the turning point on double-sloped energy decay is highly correlated to the time instant when the energy flow direction reverses.

This study investigates the effect of head movement in the evaluation of listener envelopment [LEV] and apparent source width [ASW] under 15 different concert hall conditions simulated over eight loudspeakers using Virtual Microphone Control. The conditions consist of varying ratios of front-to-back energy and varying coherence levels of cross-correlated reverberant energy. Head movements are monitored in terms of angular rotation using a head tracker while listeners are prompted to assign subjective ratings of LEV and ASW. The tests are repeated while listeners are asked to keep their heads fixed. Head movements are analysed and results of the tests are compared.

Through the evaluation of advantages and limitations of 3D historic city models, this paper aims to analyze the contribution of those tools to the city history representation. One should overcome limitations such as incomplete information, impediments to acknowledge hypotheses representations, intense labor requirements or difficulties to encourage a historical reflection. We argue that creative systems that are carefully planned towards history's thorough understanding are more effective than those applications which focus on the development of high quality images. Those issues are illustrated by the system prototype "Rio-H", which presents an alternative to communicate the history of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
