Nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans) is Indonesian native tree species originating from Maluku Island, especially Ambon and Banda. The spread of nutmeg in Bogor area can be traced back to the Dutch colonial period when different kinds of spices were traded across the Indonesian archipelago and beyond. Having this long history, nutmeg is now widely used in Bogor's culinary. At the national level, it has high economic value and become one of Indonesia's main export products. However, there is little research on nutmeg tree spatial distribution. The objectives of the study were : (1) identify the nutmeg trees spatial distribution in Bogor city (2) mapping the existence and identification of nutmeg trees conditions and growing environment. This research was conducted Bogor City from February - May 2018. The data was obtained through direct interview, study field, and study literature. Data collection is determined based on the distribution of nutmeg trees in Bogor City, and extinct status based on study literature. Furtehermore, the existence of nutmeg trees in Bogor collected used purposive and snowball technique. The results showed that a total of 108 nutmeg trees were found in all sub-districts of Bogor city. These trees grow in a variety of areas such as green corridor, public park, agriculture farm, riverbanks, yard, office park, and cemetery. The results of this study can be used as the basis for determining the preservation strategy and area for nutmeg conservation in Bogor city. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

A model-based design approach for microperforated panel absorbers comprised of multiple panel layers is developed. Microperforated panels (MPPs) are becoming increasingly popular as sound absorbers, capable of providing broadband absorption with high absorption coefficients, without the use of traditional porous materials. To increase the bandwidth of the intrinsically peaked narrowband absorption of a single MPP, multiple such panels can be combined into composite sound absorbers. We propose a method based on Bayesian inference to design multilayered MPP absorbers capable of producing a user-specified absorption profile. Using nested sampling to accumulate Bayesian evidence and to implement Occam's razor, the method produces a design requiring the fewest number of MPP layers while meeting the specified design requirements. © 2013 Acoustical Society of America.

The use of underground spaces has been pointed out as an alternative to the growing demand for more areas in cities and the presence of natural light is seen as a strategy for improving the quality of such buildings. Light pipes are one of the technologies capable of conducting light over long distances. However, they require local studies to check the most efficient performance in each geographical location. This paper aims to study the performance of a given light pipe combined with a heliostat device in Porto Alegre, a city in south Brazil. We conducted an experiment in which scale models were used. Different reflexive materials were tested and, as a second step, light pipes combined with the use of a handmade heliostat were verified. At the end, rapid prototyping tools where used to build and test an automatized heliostat. Our results pointed to a great potential for using these technologies in deep environments on cloudless days. However, in overcast weather their efficiency drops considerably, so the use of hybrid systems may be an alternative. Heat load conduction and glaring caused by direct sunlight are some of the main limitations of these systems and must be addressed in future experiments. Copyright © NCEUB 2017.

The problem of failure occurrence in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) tends to increase according to their complexity leading to time-consuming tasks as the localisation and repairing. The occurrence of failures during the exploitation stage can deeply modify the FMS performances or its availability. We want to investigate the maintenance integration into a control-monitoring framework, from the control system's early design stage to the maintenance policies execution, so as to improve production time and minimize unplanned costly breakdowns of FMS. This paper proposes a modular and hierarchic control-monitoring-maintenance architecture (CMM) for FMS based on Petri nets with objects (PNO). These efforts acts as a basis for the control architecture of a robot-driven flexible cell, connected to the Ethernet-TCP/IP. © 2006 IEEE.

Mediterranean coastal areas possess great amount of historic and archaeological assets joined up with ecological and natural values. Many of these fragile environments were originally constructed on the dry-lands, which have been transformed into different environmental context with the evolution of coastal areas over centuries and millennia. Today, increased population and poorly planned coastal activities are conflicting with the conservation principles of these fragile environments. With this concern, the aim of this paper is to define a method for documentation and evaluation of values and problems in coastal archaeological heritage of Turkey. For this purpose, through the selected segment of Mediterranean coastal area, a group of protected archaeological sites will be analyzed in order to overview the groups of value and significance they possess, damages caused by natural processes, problems and stress aroused by coastal uses. In the final;assessments related to their current situation will be carried out so as to sustain "join-up thinking" towards their integrated management. The paper will be concluded with recommendations related to development of future strategies for the sustainability of these environments and their contribution into integrated management policies.

Biofuel production using tire waste in fast pyrolysis: A life cycle assessment study

ABSTRACTDespite exceeding 2 billion units annually, the management of waste tires remains a global challenge. Pyrolysis, a thermochemical conversion process, offers a potential waste-to-energy solution with valuable byproducts. However, concerns regarding its environmental sustainability, particularly emissions associated with sulfur content, persist. The aim of this study is to evaluate the environmental impacts of a large-scale pyrolysis reactor processing waste tires using life cycle assessment (LCA) as an environmental impact tool. In this study, using heating fuel oil (HFO) and non-condensable gas (NCG) as heating methods, two pyrolysis scenarios were investigated in terms of their environmental performance. The LCA identified abiotic depletion and acidification as key environmental concerns. The HFO scenario has shown a 15% greater impact on abiotic depletion and a 78% greater impact on acidification compared to the NCG scenario. This difference has been attributed to the higher sulfur content in HFO. Nevertheless, both pyrolysis scenarios have shown positive environmental benefits regarding marine and freshwater ecotoxicity compared to conventional alternatives. These findings support the potential of pyrolysis for sustainable waste tire management while highlighting the need for further optimization to minimize sulfur-related emissions. The findings of this study can be used as a roadmap towards adapting clean technologies such as pyrolysis as a waste management strategy for policymakers by applying holistic system boundaries and regulated pyrolysis production.

Do China's Outward Direct Investors Prefer Countries with High Political Risk? An International and Empirical Comparison

This paper focuses on a conventional debate regarding whether Chinese outward direct investors tend to invest in countries with high political risk. Using 2003 -2011 data from the World Bank, the Heritage Foundation and the KOF Swiss Economic Institute, we investigate China ＇s political risk distribution and political risk index （PRI）. Our results indicate that China ＂s political risk index was ranked 48th among 153 economies in 2011, in the lower risk level of the PRI spectrum. In an international comparison of political risk distribution, the proportion of Chinese outward direct investment （ODI） among countries with high political risk is less than the world average. The Chinese ODI political risk index has significantly improved and remains lower than the world average. To improve Chinese ODI PRI, the Chinese Government should continue to implement differentiation strategies and to offer official development assistance to improve the investment environment in developing countries and reduce political risk.

Robotic assembly of modular blocks has a great interest in multi-robotic studies in many disciplines. The existing studies primarily focus on context-specific tasks, especially in the self-assembly of robots, from an engineering perspective. However, considering a modular composition's entire design and fabrication process regarding mereological relationships is significant for the module's reuse in different pattern formations by mobile multi-robots. This study defines mobile robot swarms’ adaptability to the assembly-disassembly-reassembly (ADR) process to any-time change of the 3D pattern being assembled. Hence, the robot's manipulator needs to be compatible with picking up, carrying, attaching, and detaching the modules in the ADR process. This study questions the effects of the ADR process on manipulator development in multi-robotic systems. It aims to customize and develop manipulator systems beyond the existing gripper for multi-robot systems. Accordingly, it introduces a new conceptual understanding of manipulators’ taxonomy as friction-based and active and passive magnetic field-based end-effectors for the ADR process. Active indicates the use of electromagnets, whereas passive refers to using metal parts in the manipulator’s body. A physical experiment is conducted based on the above-stated taxonomies whose manipulators are printed in the Creality Ender3 and mounted to a mobile robot with a differential drive. The process is observed to discuss the introduced magnetic end-effectors, the system’s adaptability needs, and the pros and cons compared to the conventional gripper. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

GIS-Based Methodology for Crash Prediction on Single-Lane Rural Highways

Due to the need to update the current guidelines for highway design to focus on safety, this study sought to build an accident prediction model using a Geographic Information System (GIS) for single-lane rural highways, with a minimum of statistically significant variables, adequate to the Brazilian reality, and improve accident prediction for places with similar characteristics. A database was created to associate the accident records with the geometric parameters of the highway and to fill in the gaps left by the absence of geometric highway plans through geometric reconstitution or semi-automatic extraction of highways using satellite images. The Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) method was applied to estimate the coefficients of the model, assuming negative distribution of the binomial error for the count of observed accidents. The accident frequency and annual average daily traffic (AADT) were analyzed, along with the spatial and geometric characteristics of 215 km of federal single-lane rural highways between 2007 and 2016. The GEE procedure was applied to two models having three variations of distinct homogeneous segmentation, two based on segments and one based on the kernel density estimator. To assess the effect of constant traffic, two more variations of the models using AADT as an offset variable were considered. The predominant correlation structure in the models was the exchangeable. The principal contributing factors for the occurrence of collisions were the radius of the horizontal curve, the grade, segment length, and the AADT. The study produced clear indicators for the design parameters of roadways that influence the safety performance of rural highways.
