The aim of this paper is to analyze volleyball practice in the beaches of Copacabana(Rio de Janeiro,Brazil)and Carcavelos and Cascais Bay(Cascais,Portugal)and to review the forms of appropriation of public space based on public policies and rules of the sport in *** methodology rests on bibliographic review and ethnographic research to map and distinguish the results in two spatial and cultural contexts that are considerably *** show that even with greater extension of Copacabana beach in comparison with Cascais,volleyball has a relevant impact in both *** installation of the necessary equipment for volleyball practice is also a form of impact in the landscape and establishment of territoriality,which is mainly activated when the game happens.

Cycling is widely regarded as a healthy and sustainable transport option in urban environments. However, there is an emergent need to understand how cycling in countries like Brazil, can be encouraged and supported, particularly among different sections of the population. This study investigates social-psychological antecedents of cycling within the Brazilian context using a large-scale dataset to verify the appropriateness of a model based on the extended Theory of Planned Behaviour (e-TPB). In-person interviews were conducted with people living in three large Brazilian cities – Brasília ( n =1107), Florianópolis ( n =1084), and Porto Alegre ( n =1105) using a questionnaire including nine items from the e-TPB to measure attitudes, social norms, perceived behavioural control, intention, cycling behaviour, and habit. Multigroup analysis verified the model fit and invariance in structural weights by gender. Age and gender were revealed to be the only sociodemographic variables with significant influence on the components’ mean scores, with gender exhibiting the strongest influence. We concluded that the e-TPB allows us to explain cycling behaviour among this sample of the Brazilian population and that it is particularly sensitive to (a) other people's influence (b) personal habit (c) perceived behavioural control (d) belief in the ability to change one’s behaviour. Women were less likely to cycle and were less likely to be influenced by social-psychological components that could encourage this type of activity. Thus, we conclude that understanding the social and cognitive determinants of cycling can help to design more targeted policies for different sections of society.

Sub-Meter Tree Height Mapping of California using Aerial Images and LiDAR-Informed U-Net Model

Tree canopy height is one of the most important indicators of forest biomass, productivity, and species diversity, but it is challenging to measure accurately from the ground and from space. Here, we used a U-Net model adapted for regression to map the canopy height of all trees in the state of California with very high-resolution aerial imagery (60 cm) from the USDA-NAIP program. The U-Net model was trained using canopy height models computed from aerial LiDAR data as a reference, along with corresponding RGB-NIR NAIP images collected in 2020. We evaluated the performance of the deep-learning model using 42 independent 1 km2 sites across various forest types and landscape variations in California. Our predictions of tree heights exhibited a mean error of 2.9 m and showed relatively low systematic bias across the entire range of tree heights present in California. In 2020, trees taller than 5 m covered ∼ 19.3% of California. Our model successfully estimated canopy heights up to 50 m without saturation, outperforming existing canopy height products from global models. The approach we used allowed for the reconstruction of the three-dimensional structure of individual trees as observed from nadir-looking optical airborne imagery, suggesting a relatively robust estimation and mapping capability, even in the presence of image distortion. Monitoring changes in tree cover for rapid assessment of deforestation is considered the critical component of any climate mitigation policy for reducing carbon. Here, we map tropical tree cover and deforestation between 2015 and 2022 using 5 m spatial resolution Planet NICFI satellite images over the state of Mato Grosso (MT) in Brazil and a U-net deep learning model. The tree cover for the state was 556510.8 km2 in 2015 (58.1 % of the MT State) and was reduced to 141598.5 km2 (14.8 % of total area) at the end of 2021. After reaching a minimum deforested area in December 2016 with 6632.05 km2, the bi-annual deforestation area only showed a slight increase between December 2016 and December 2019. A year after, the areas of deforestation almost doubled from 9944.5 km2 in December 2019 to 19817.8 km2 in December 2021. The high-resolution data product showed relatively consistent agreement with the official deforestation map from Brazil (67.2%) but deviated significantly from year of forest cover loss estimates from the Global Forest change (GFC) product, mainly due to large area of fire degradation observed in the GFC data. Urban Rules and Morphology Analysis as Support to Solar Performance in Passo Fundo/RS, Brazil

The expansion and densification of cities should be planned to ensure minimum health conditions for buildings. In this sense, this study is interested in the right to solar access for buildings using the analysis of solar envelope to propose urban forms that guarantee this right. The study is in the exploratory phase, and it is applied to the city of Passo Fundo, Brazil. The study started from an analysis of the pre-existing morphological structure, and the solar envelope was generated using the Ladybug tool plugins for Grasshopper and Diva applications in Rhinoceros software. The results showed that the pre-existing urban form has low solar performance, evidencing the need to review construction rules according to the pattern and positioning of lots. Thus, it is expected to be counterbalanced by the revision of urban rules, proposing subsidies for the reformulation and adequacy, or creation of new legislation.

Economic growth promoted by large investment projects in the city of Seropédica and surrounding areas is not accompanied by a territorial planning that supports future growth scenarios. The challenge of the municipality is to prepare to have its territory fully transformed. This study aimed to establish quantitative data on the interferences that the growth model practiced has caused in its main watercourse called Val?o dos Bois. For this, its morphometric characteristics and physicochemical parameters of water quality were measured, and computational simulations of the self-purification processes were performed at various points, as well as the infiltration and precipitation processes, surface flow and leaching in four occupation scenarios of the urbanized areas of the basin, for rains with five different return periods.

In the last years, architectural practice has been confronted with a paradigm shift towards the application of digital methods in design activities. In this regard, it is a pedagogic challenge to provide a suitable computational background for architectural students, to improve their ability to apply algorithmic-parametric logic, as well as fabrication and prototyping resources to design problem solving. This challenge is even stronger when considering less favored social and technological contexts, such as in Brazil, for example. In this scenario, this article presents and discusses the procedures and the results from a didactic experience carried out in a design computing-oriented discipline, inserted in the curriculum of a Brazilian architecture course. Hence, this paper shares some design computing teaching experiences and presents some results on computational methods and creative approaches, with a view to contribute to a better understanding about the relations between logical thinking, mathematics and architectural design processes.

This article deals with the usage of building bricks as a didactic material for the development of architectural design. The building brick game chosen for analysis was the Arckit, since it is suitable for the architectural practice. It is estimated that this game can contribute to the design, representation and presentation of projects. In order to investigate in which aspects Arckit presents possibilities of applications, as well as limitations of use, the article approaches the importance of building bricks as a didactic tool and its use in the field of the architectural design process. From a literature review and an empirical experience, this article reports a qualitative research, where the applicability of the Arckit game was checked. Through a critical reflection based on that experience, it was possible to conclude that whereas its limitations to urban form and linked to the formal vocabulary that composes the grammar of these bricks, the Arckit building bricks represent in architecture a playful and experimental way to think and design, fomenting the creativity and the spatial perception, resulting in a particular experience that can make architecture better connected with dreams and joy.

This work involves experiments using subroutines developed by the author in Fortran language to calculate heat and mass transfer, and ventilation. The simulations were done to check the results of the influence of the application of different materials on a flat roof associated to passive ventilation. The target of this paper is to evaluate the use of subroutines developed to show air temperature changes, the heat transfer through a flat roof and the ventilation on a small prototype. The experiments conducted involved predictable results and that is exactly why they were suitable to check the performance of the subroutine. It is relevant to mention that the heat transfer through a flat roof was checked including a solar gain factor, which changes during the simulation using the subroutines, according to the hour of day (hourly from 7a.m. to 5p.m). The analysis started by solving the air-circulation problem to determine the wind fields, using a mixed stabilized finite element method, like Petrov-Galerkin, applied to the full Navier-Stokes equations. The thermal problem is analyzed through the SUPG - Streamline Up-wind Petrov-Galerkin stabilized finite element method.
