Grading the gradient: Evidence for time-dependent memory reorganization in experimental animals

In humans, damage limited to the hippocampus produces temporally graded retrograde amnesia, with relative sparing of remote compared to recent memory. This observation forms the cornerstone of the idea that as memories mature they are reorganized in a time-dependent manner. In this paper, we evaluate evidence for similar time-dependent reorganization in experimental animals. In the majority of behavioral paradigms examined, these studies provide evidence that memories are gradually reorganized over time, with the hippocampus and cortex playing preferential (although not necessarily mutually exclusive) roles in the expression of recent and remote memory, respectively. This pattern is not observed in all tasks, however. For example, in the water maze hippocampal activity is always necessary for memory expression. Identifying situations when the hippocampus is, and is not, required for remote memory expression will help us to understand hippocampal contributions to memory, and, more generally, whether changes in memory organization lead to qualitative changes in the nature of memory. © Springer Verlag 2007.

Do we estimate time in a different way when talking about last year's holiday or when planning the next one? In other words, does time – being both a concept and a context – has an impact on the way we perceive the duration of an event? And, do the different temporal concepts reflect to distinct spatial points? As far as language is concerned, the main focus of the research emphasizes on the relation between time and space, either in terms of language metaphors ( Boroditsky, 2000 , Boroditsky, 2001 , Casasanto and Boroditsky, 2008 , Casasanto et al., 2004 ), or reaction times, when words and sentences of several temporal concepts are being presented in different points in space or responded by spatially distinct keys ( Santiago et al., 2007 ; Torralbo, Santiago, & Lupiáñez, 2006; Ulrich & Maienborn, 2010 ). Many of the studies result on the existence of a mental time-line that resembles a spatial organization, with past and short durations being represented on the left side of space, while future and long durations on its right extreme for western populations (see Bonato, Zorzi, & Umiltà, 2012, for a review). Taking into account that duration estimation comprises a fundamental dimension of time perception, it seems rather strange that reproduction tasks have not yet been used to test the above-mentioned claim and, in general, the fact that temporal concepts have not been investigated through temporal tasks, but solely through spatial tasks. If time is indeed represented in terms of space, then that should be demonstrable not only in a task based on the speed by which a time concept is being recognised ( Santiago et al., 2007 ; Torralbo, Santiago, & Lupiáñez, 2006), but on other aspects of timing, such as the duration of the presented concept(s). Following the recent development of quantum machine learning techniques, the literature has reported several quantum machine learning algorithms for disease detection. This study explores the application of a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm for classifying region-of-interest time-series data obtained from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging in patients with early-stage cognitive impairment based on the importance of cognitive decline for dementia or aging. Classical one-dimensional convolutional layers are used together with quantum convolutional neural networks in our hybrid algorithm. In the classical simulation, the proposed hybrid algorithms showed higher balanced accuracies than classical convolutional neural networks under the similar training conditions. Moreover, a total of nine brain regions (left precentral gyrus, right superior temporal gyrus, left rolandic operculum, right rolandic operculum, left parahippocampus, right hippocampus, left medial frontal gyrus, right cerebellum crus, and cerebellar vermis) among 116 brain regions were found to be relatively effective brain regions for the classification based on the model performances. The associations of the selected nine regions with cognitive decline, as found in previous studies, were additionally validated through seed-based functional connectivity analysis. We confirmed both the improvement of model performance with the quantum convolutional neural network and neuroscientific validities of brain regions from our hybrid quantum-classical model. Following recent developments in quantum machine learning techniques, several algorithms have been developed for disease detection. Investigation of factors regarding the effects of COVID-19 pandemic on college students’ depression by quantum annealer

Diverse cases regarding the impact, with its related factors, of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health have been reported in previous studies. College student groups have been frequently selected as the target population in previous studies because they are easily affected by pandemics. In this study, multivariable datasets were collected from 751 college students based on the complex relationships between various mental health factors. We utilized quantum annealing (QA)-based feature selection algorithms that were executed by commercial D-Wave quantum computers to determine the changes in the relative importance of the associated factors before and after the pandemic. Multivariable linear regression (MLR) and XGBoost models were also applied to validate the QA-based algorithms. Based on the experimental results, we confirm that QA-based algorithms have comparable capabilities in factor analysis research to the MLR models that have been widely used in previous studies. Furthermore, the performance of the QA-based algorithms was validated through the important factor results from the algorithms. Pandemic-related factors (e.g., confidence in the social system) and psychological factors (e.g., decision-making in uncertain situations) were more important in post-pandemic conditions. CLNS1A is a chloride channel protein and an essential component of the methylosome complex, which additionally comprises PRMT5 and MEP50. In this study, we investigated its contribution to lung cancer and its potential as a therapeutic target. Analysis of transcriptomic datasets and western blotting revealed that CLNS1A, PRMT5, and MEP50 were overexpressed in lung cancer tissues, with elevated CLNS1A expression correlating with poor patient survival. CLNS1A overexpression enhanced platinum clearance from cells, increased the IC values for chemotherapy, and improved cell survival. Conversely, the knockdown of CLNS1A increased drug accumulation, reduced survival, and increased sensitivity to chemotherapy. The 3W mutant, a chloride channel-defective variant with steric hindrance at key bottleneck residues, impaired chloride ion transport, thereby reducing drug resistance, migration, and anchorage-independent growth. Mechanistically, CLNS1A promotes drug efflux through its chloride channel activity and activates the FAK-SRC-RAC1 pathway to enhance motility and clonogenicity. It also facilitates PRMT5-mediated RUVBL1 methylation to support anti-apoptotic DNA damage response signaling. In vivo, CLNS1A overexpression accelerated tumor growth and reduced survival, whereas CLNS1A knockdown sensitized tumors to cisplatin, enhancing therapeutic efficacy. These findings suggest that CLNS1A is a potential biomarker and therapeutic target, and its inhibition offers a strategy to overcome drug resistance and limit the metastatic progression of lung cancer.

Identifying cues to contagious disease is critical for effectively tracking and defending against interpersonal infection threats. People hold lay beliefs about the types of sensory information most relevant for identifying whether others are sick with transmissible illnesses. Are these beliefs universal, or do they vary along cultural and ecological dimensions? Participants in 58 countries (N = 19,217) judged how effective, and how likely they were to use, cues involving each of the five major sensory modalities in an imagined social interaction during a flu outbreak. Belief patterns were strongly consistent across countries (sight > audition > touch > smell > taste), suggesting a largely universal conceptualization of the role of sensory information for interpersonal respiratory disease detection. Results also support a safe senses hypothesis, with perceivers reporting that they would use senses that function at a distance—and thus reduce pathogen transmission risk—more than would be expected given participants’ beliefs as to the efficacy of these senses for disease detection. Where societal variation did emerge, it was captured by a cohesive set of socio-ecological factors, including human development, latitude, pathogen prevalence, and population density. Together, these findings reveal a shared lens through which contagious respiratory disease is assessed, one that prioritizes minimizing risk to perceivers, and may offer leverage for designing interventions to improve public health. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

Africa, the world's second-largest continent is home to 1.5 billion people, accounting for nearly 20% of the global population, (60% under age 25). By 2050, Africa's population will be 2.5 billion, and by 2035, more young Africans will be entering the workforce each year than in the rest of the world combined. Africa also hosts a rich social, cultural, and geopolitical diversity across its 5 geopolitical zones covering 54 countries. It is the most genetically, culturally, and linguistically diverse region on the planet. However, Africa's contribution to the global economy could be more significant if it urgently embraces the brain economy and leads in the development of new methodologies and approaches which can be exported around the world. In this paper, we explain our strategy to advance the Yaoundé Declaration for the Brain Economy, Brain Health, and Brain Capital. The Declaration has been endorsed by Cameroon's President, His Excellency Paul Biya, and demonstrates African leadership in global brain and society innovations, laying out a roadmap for how Africa can outcompete other economies by deftly deploying brain science-inspired policies and investments. We outline a new economic approach for African jobs, economic growth, sustainability, resilience, health, and well-being. The brain economy offers a broader framework than the current sustainable development goals (SDG) agenda. The Yaoundé Declaration is trans-disciplinary and cross-cutting across sectors: 32 sitting members of government from different sectors having co-authored this paper. It aligns with many aspects of the United Nations Pact for the Future and can accelerate the SDG. © 2025
