A tissue bath system, to be used as an alternative to complex perfusion chambers, was constructed for use in cardiac electrophysiological studies. This system consists of an acrylic chamber to hold circulating physiological medium such as DMEM, suspended in a water bath warmed by a hot plate. Temperature and pH were controlled to mimic physiological conditions. Rat and porcine cardiac tissues, were used to test viability of the conditions presented in the bath system. Using a cardiac mapping system, the tissues were stimulated and responses recorded. From the recordings we were able to calculate conduction velocities and spatial dispersion of activation indices. The results are comparable to previous in-vivo work, which suggests that the tissue bath system design can maintain tissue viability. This tissue bath system is a relatively simple alternative for ex-vivo testing of cardiac tissues. © 2011 IEEE.

Metabolism is vital to every aspect of cell function, yet the metabolome of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) remains largely unexplored. Here we report, using an untargeted metabolomics approach, that human iPSCs share a pluripotent metabolomic signature with embryonic stem cells (ESCs) that is distinct from their parental cells, and that is characterized by changes in metabolites involved in cellular respiration. Examination of cellular bioenergetics corroborated with our metabolomic analysis, and demonstrated that somatic cells convert from an oxidative state to a glycolytic state in pluripotency. Interestingly, the bioenergetics of various somatic cells correlated with their reprogramming efficiencies. We further identified metabolites that differ between iPSCs and ESCs, which revealed novel metabolic pathways that play a critical role in regulating somatic cell reprogramming. Our findings are the first to globally analyze the metabolome of iPSCs, and provide mechanistic insight into a new layer of regulation involved in inducing pluripotency, and in evaluating iPSC and ESC equivalence.

The purpose of this paper is to assess Parkinson tremor estimating actual distance amplitude. We propose a practical, useful and simple method for evaluating Parkinson tremor with distance value. We measured resting tremor of 7 Parkinson Disease (PD) patients with triaxial accelerometer. Resting tremor of participants was diagnosed by Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) by neurologist. First, we segmented acceleration signal during 7 seconds from recorded data. To estimate a displacement of tremor, we performed double integration from the acceleration. Prior to double integration, moving average method was used to reduce an error of integral constant. After estimation of displacement, we calculated tremor distance during 1s from segmented signal using Euclidean distance. We evaluated the distance values compared with UPDRS. Averaged moving distance during 1 second corresponding to UPDRS 1 was 11.52mm, that of UPDRS 2 was 33.58mm and tremor distance of UPDRS 3 was 382.22 mm. Estimated moving distance during 1s was proportional to clinical rating scale — UPDRS.

It was with great excitement that we planned the combined meetings of Northeast Aquaculture Conference and Exposition (NACE) and the International Conference on Shellfish Restoration (ICSR) with the 33rd Milford Aquaculture Seminar (MAS). Bringing these different but complementary audiences together resulted in a meeting that combined many different aspects of fisheries restoration and aquaculture under one *** hundred attendees including government representatives, research scientists, industry, and academia at both the university and vocational high school levels attended this event. The meeting commenced on Wednesday December 12th 2012, with over eighty people attending seven field trips to area aquaculture farms and research facilities. The formal program began on Thursday, December 13th with a plenary session including invited speakers Eric Schwabb, Acting Assistant Secretary for Conservation and Management at NOAA; Sebastian Belle, Executive Director of the Maine Aquaculture Association and Boze Hancock from the Nature Conservancy, who discussed the role of aquaculture in fisheries restoration. John Bullard, the Northeast Regional Administrator of NOAA Fisheries Service, addressed the group during the luncheon the following day. The technical papers and workshops presented were divided into 35 sessions over three days of the meeting and included topics such as the history of aquaculture, aquaculture hatchery innovations, siting and planning issues, risk management, aquaculture business management, ocean acidification, climate change, as well as aquaculture disease issues and potential remedies. Having persons present who have experienced problems and successes, along with those in manufacturing and government responsible for addressing concerns and sharing best practices, was invaluable. Discussions among this cross-section of persons who represent different aspects of aquaculture were as important as the well-presented and interesting formal papers

engineering capstone design is a culminating experience that is intended to provide an opportunity for students to apply their previous engineering knowledge to develop solutions to open-ended problems. Capstone design problems are often analytically complex, and their solutions integrate several disciplinary fundamentals, as well as more general design process knowledge. Often, the expectation is that a thorough or rigorous solution to a capstone level problem would include some type of computational or mathematical analysis appropriate to that discipline. However, engineering students often struggle in recognizing when and how disciplinary knowledge (e.g. mathematical analysis inherent in many engineering fundamentals) applies to their particular design solutions. This paper describes the strategy for and initial results of a study exploring how students use mathematical reasoning when developing design solutions. Specifically, we want to understand where students struggle in the development and implementation of a mathematical model. We conducted our study in a biomedical capstone (senior) design course. We presented students with a scenario based on a design problem in using phototherapy to treat jaundice, and asked specific questions relating to mathematical modeling in the solution to this problem. We developed the scenario and corresponding assignments based on previous work that identified six steps for what mathematical modeling should include. We staged the activities over a four-week period such that students addressed two of these steps at each time interval, or assignment stage. This report analyzes results from the first two activities, which focused on identifying the real-world phenomenon and simplifying or idealizing it. We found that in an open-ended statement of the problem, no students proposed using a mathematical model to assist in designing the device. When we specifically asked for a mathematical model in a second activity, only five students

Indirect-contact photoplethysmography is a new approach to measure photoplethysmogrm over clothing for unconstrained and unconscious monitoring purpose. In this paper, the effect of sensor configurations on indirect-contact photoplehysmography was investigated. Sensor configuration was classified into two groups. One was multiple light sources with centered photo-detector configuration and the other was multiple photo-detectors with centered light source configuration. Total 8 kinds of sensors were tested. Experimental results showed that although both sensor groups have possibility to photoplethysmogram measurement over clothing, sensors with multiple light sources showed better performance when thick clothes were considered. Sensor configuration should be selected with regard to its application considerations such as power consumption or target subjects.

The finger vein image acquired with an acquisition system should be properly aligned to proceed with comparing algorithm. However it is not easy to find control the points since the images are naturally blurred with an inherent scattering property. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel finger vein registration method utilizing skin surface information (i.e. wrinkles and outlines). We assumed that finger crooking was insignificant. Images were sampled with intended translation and rotation. Each time, two images were acquired successively by switching the light source;one with infrared light and the other with white light. Degree of rotation and translation of sampled image were calculated using outline features in the white light image and then the infrared image was transformed according to the calculated data. To validate our method, correlation values were computed between identical subjects and different subjects. High correlation values were shown between identical subjects whereas low values were shown between different subjects. © 2009 SPIE.

A portable flow cytometer with simultaneous detection of impedance and fluorescence was constructed incorporating polyelectrolytic gel electrodes (PGE) based impedance measurement and fluorescence measurement with integrated solid-state photonic devices. Simultaneous detection of fluorescence and impedance signal was performed with fluorescent and plain beads. The fluorescence and impedance signal were in good sync with flow of beads. © 2009 CBMS.

Authentication using finger vein pattern has substantial advantage than other biometrics. Because human vein patterns are hidden inside the skin and tissue, it is hard to forge vein structure. But conventional system using NIR LED array has two drawbacks. First, direct contact with LED array raise sanitary problem. Second, because of discreteness of LEDs, non-uniform illumination exists. We propose non-contact finger vein acquisition system using NIR laser and Laser line generator lens. Laser line generator lens makes evenly distributed line laser from focused laser light. Line laser is aimed on the finger longitudinally. NIR camera was used for image acquisition. 200 index finger vein images from 20 candidates are collected. Same finger vein pattern extraction algorithm was used to evaluate two sets of images. Acquired images from proposed non-contact system do not show any non-uniform illumination in contrary with conventional system. Also results of matching are comparable to conventional system. We developed Non-contact finger vein acquisition system. It can prevent potential cross contamination of skin diseases. Also the system can produce uniformly illuminated images unlike conventional system. With the benefit of non-contact, proposed system shows almost equivalent performance compared with conventional system. © 2009 SPIE-IS&T.
