Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis can detect an analyte with high sensitivity in short *** self-assembled monolayer (SAM) technique is usually used for attaching analytes to a *** general,the relatively time-consuming incubation time and the non-uniform immobilization of an analyte on the sensing electrode are the commonly encountered *** study proposes a simple microvibration method based on Bernoulli's theory for improving incubation time and enhancing the adhesion uniformity of the *** detection of the group-2 allergen Der p2 demonstrates that a suitable applied frequency at a fixed amplitude can considerably reduce the sample preparation time and improve the adhesion and adhesive uniformity of the *** is also found that compared to the conventional dipping method the microvibration method can give a relatively large detection range,provide a relatively better detection linearity,and result in a standard detection curve with a relatively large slope so that the sensitivity of the sensor can be increased and the detection error due to measurement variations can be *** proposed scheme can be further applied to other detection methods that use surface-bound reactions for analyte immobilization.

Osteoarthritis(OA) is a degenerative joint disease that leads to the articular cartilage(AC) degeneration and joint function *** stage OA is primarily associated with proteoglycan(PG) loss and collagen structure *** MR T2 imaging is a promising non-invasive diagnostic tool that has shown the potential to reflect changes in the biochemical composition of cartilage with early OA.T2 relaxation times give a quantitative measure of the molecular interactions occurring within the imaged cartilage *** can represent cartilage tissue biochemical character that can be quantified with the help of specific imaging *** goal of this study was to apply Levenberg-Marquardt curve fitting algorithm for T2 mapping quantification and T2 relaxation time calculation to study T2 relaxation characters based on quantitative MR T2 imaging of the tibiofemoral condyle *** MR T2 images of a healthy male volunteer's right knee were generated by a 3T MRI scanner using a spin echo multislice multiecho(MSME) Carr-Purcell Meiboom-Gill(CPMG) *** medial and lateral tibiofemoral condyle cartilage was further subdivided into the regions of interest(ROIs) for identifying variation in T2 values.T2 relaxation times mean and standard deviation of ROIs were calculated using Levenberg-Marquardt curve fitting algorithm with correction and without *** results show that the Levenberg-Marquardt curve fitting algorithm was feasible for T2 relaxation time calculation of tibiofemoral cartilage,the CPMG sequence was sensitive to cartilage tissue imaging,and T2 parameter can be used for the characterization of articular cartilage tissue.

Electrocorticography has been widely explored as a long-term signal acquisition platform for brain-computer interface (BCI) control of upper extremity prostheses. However, a comprehensive study of elementary upper extremity movements and their relationship to electrocorticogram (ECoG) signals has yet to be performed. This study examines whether kinematic parameters of 6 elementary upper extremity movements can be decoded from ECoG signals in 3 subjects undergoing subdural electrode placement for epilepsy surgery evaluation. To this end, we propose a 2-stage decoding approach that consists of a state decoder to determine idle/move states, followed by a Kalman filter-based trajectory decoder. This proposed decoder successfully classified idle/move states with an average accuracy of 91%, and the correlation between decoded and measured trajectory averaged 0.70 for position and 0.68 for velocity. These performances represent an improvement over a simple regression-based approach.

In this paper, a vibration-assisted needle insertion technique has been proposed in order to reduce needle-tissue friction. The LuGre friction model was employed as a basis for the current study and the model was extended and analyzed to include the impact of high-frequency vibration on translational friction. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the role of insertion speed as well as vibration frequency on frictional effects. In the experiments conducted, an 18 GA brachytherapy needle was vibrated and inserted into an ex-vivo soft tissue sample using a pair of amplified piezoelectric actuators. Analysis demonstrates that the translational friction can be reduced by introducing a vibratory low-amplitude motion onto a regular insertion profile, which is usually performed at a constant rate.

To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

Medical care costs can reach an estimated value of $4 billion for spinal cord injuries (SCI) each year in the USA alone. With no viable treatment options available, care remains palliative and aims to minimize lifelong disabilities and complications, such as immobility, bladder and bowel dysfunction, breathing problems, and blood clots. Human hair keratin biomaterials have demonstrated efficacy in peripheral nerve injury models and were shown to improve conduction delay and increase axon number and density. In this study, a keratin hydrogel was tested in a central nervous system (CNS) application of spinal cord hemisection injury. Keratin-treated rats showed increased survival rates as well as a better functional recovery of gait properties and bladder function. Histological results demonstrated reduced glial scar formation with keratin treatment and suggested a greater degree of beneficial remodeling and cellular influx. The data provided in this pilot study suggest the possibility of using a keratin-based treatment for SCI and warrant further investigation.

We present a novel and fast interactive approach to multi-modality cardiac image segmentation, which employs the linearly ordered surfaces as an additional constraint. We show using such a geometrical constraint helps to significantly reduce user interaction and improve the accuracy of segmentation results at the same time. We solve the proposed multiregion segmentation problem with the order constraints by means of convex optimization, resulting in a fast and reliable flow maximization approach which implicitly embeds the linear order prior without introducing extra computation load. In this regard, a new fully parallelized continuous max-flow algorithm is proposed and implemented using GPGPU to segment a 3D volume within one second. We demonstrate our results over pathological trans-esophageal echocardiogram, cardiac CT and delayed enhancement MRI data sets. © 2012 IEEE.

BACKGROUND:Sleep disturbances are among the most common non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), greatly interfering with daily activities and diminishing life quality. Pharmacological treatments have not been satisfactory because of side effects and interactions with anti-parkinsonian drugs. While studies have shown that regular exercise improves sleep quality in normal aging, there is no definitive evidence in PD. METHODS:In a retrospective study, we determined whether an intense physical and multidisciplinary exercise program improves sleep quality in a large group of patients with PD. We analyzed the scores of PD Sleep Scale (PDSS), which was administered twice, 28 days apart, to two groups of patients with PD of comparable age, gender, disease duration and pharmacological treatment. The control group (49 patients) did not receive rehabilitation, The treated group (89 patients) underwent a 28-day multidisciplinary intensive rehabilitation program (three one-hour daily sessions comprising cardiovascular warm-up, relaxation, muscle-stretching, balance and gait training, occupational therapy to improve daily living activities). RESULTS:At enrolment, control and treated groups had similar UPDRS and PDSS scores. At re-test, 28 days later, UPDRS and total PDSS scores improved in the treated (p < 0.0001) but not in the control group. In particular, the treated group showed significant improvement in PDSS scores for sleep quality, motor symptoms and daytime somnolence. The control group did not show improvement for any item. CONCLUSIONS:These results suggest that multidisciplinary intensive rehabilitation treatment may have a positive impact on many aspects of sleep in PD.
