The usability of a prosthetic hand difers significantly from that of a real ***,the complexity of manipulation increases as the number of degrees of freedom to be controlled increases,making manipulation with biological signals extremely *** overcome this problem,users need to select a grasping posture that is adaptive to the object and a stable grasping method that prevents the object from *** previous studies,these have been left to the operating skills of the user,which is extremely difficult to *** this study,we demonstrate how stable and adaptive grasping can be achieved according to the object regardless of the user's operation *** required grasping technique is achieved by determining the correlation bet ween the motor output and each sensor through the interaction between the prosthetic hand and the surrounding stimuli,such as myoelectricity,sense of touch,and grasping *** agents of the 16 DOF robot hand were trained with the myoelectric signals of six participants,including one child with a congenital forearm ***,each agent could open and close the hand in response to the myoeletric stimuli and could accomplish the object pickup *** the tasks,the agents successfully identified grasping patterns suitable for practical and stable positioning of the *** addition,the agents were able to pick up the object in a similar posture regardless of the partiipant,suggesting that the hand was optimized by evolutionary computation to a posture that prevents the object from being dropped.

Traditional disease surveillance systems depend on outpatient reporting and virological test results released by hospitals. These data have valid and accurate information about emerging outbreaks but it's often not timely. In recent years the exponential growth of users getting connected to social media provides immense knowledge about epidemics by sharing related information. Social media can now flag more immediate concerns related to outbreaks in real time. In this paper we apply the long short-term memory recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture to classify tweets conveyed influenza-related information and compare its performance with baseline algorithms including support vector machine (SVM), decision tree, naive Bayes, simple logistics, and naive Bayes multinomial. The developed RNN model achieved an F-score of 0.845 on the MedWeb task test set, which outperforms the F-score of SVM without applying the synthetic minority oversampling technique by 0.08. The F-score of the RNN model is within 1% of the highest score achieved by SVM with oversampling technique. © 2017 AFNLP

In present, more and more attention has been put on the effort of protection of personal data and also new encryption technologies are derived. In this article, we introduce a personal information protection technology, global unique identifier (GUID), which is developed by National Institutes of Health U.S. and used for personal health information protection. The GUID is an identifier that allows researchers to associate and share data specific to a study participant without using or exposing personally identifiable information (PII). The GUID is made up of random alphanumeric characters and is not directly generated from PII/Protected Health Information (PHI). It has been approved by the NIH/USA office General Counsel for secure sharing of anonymized database. In our study, we used GUID as key identifier for health data collection from aboriginal tribe in a health promotion project. © Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2015.

SIR (susceptible, infectious, removed) epidemic models are commonly used in infectious disease study. These models use systems of differential equations to estimate epidemiological parameters. However, differential equations often suffer from numerical challenges. Here, we proposed simple, effective and robust innovative methods for estimating key infectious disease parameters. Our methods are reformed from the SIR models, by adjusting components of model compartments. We illustrated the methods using the recent large disease outbreaks, Ebola virus disease and Middle East respiratory syndrome Coronavirus.

Previous research has consistently cited the importance of a usable interface in the successful adoption of the electronic health record (EHR). Among the most time intensive EHR activities is Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) a method of creating and modifying orders through an electronic interface. The Marshfield Clinic, a non-profit, regional health care organization in Wisconsin, is in the process of implementing a new CPOE system. As a part of early evaluation, cognitive and behavioral modeling was coupled with formative usability testing to better understand the potential use of a new CPOE design. Participants consisted of 11 medical residents. Results suggest that participants were able to complete the majority of task scenarios in less than 20 seconds per task. Additionally, the integration of a cognitive and behavioral tool provided new evaluation information to help aid in future design efforts.

The Hospital is the most complex and representative establishment of the society and nowadays, among the most costly ones. ICTs may rationalize personnel-efforts and reduce energy and material-wasting, to enable health-care coverage, of unprivileged social-groups. The aim of the paper is to present the most effective and efficient means and tools, reducing unnecessary cost, as Mobile IP-network, Service-oriented architecture, provided to other components, through a communication protocol, over a network, Ubiquitous-computing, Femtocells, small, low-power cellular base-stations, typically designed for use in a hospital-department, ward-room or unit, Wireless mesh-networks, made-up of radio-nodes, organized in a mesh-topology, supporting intra-hospital data-exchange, training Multimedia-sharing over wireless networks, for real-time or compressed data-streaming over IP/wireless-networks for communication or archiving. Green-computing in wireless-networks, are limiting people and material intrahospital 'circulation' and, thus, they are enabling the necessary environmentally friendly and smooth procedures. Standardization, policies and regulations for green communications and computing, in 'green' Hospitals are indispensable and ICTs enable procedures optimization, solving energy- and material-waste problems, reducing the overall operational-cost, in the emerging 'smart, green and networked' Hospital, in favor of the people in need. © 2017 ITU.

Protein Folding as a Jamming Transition

Proteins fold to a specific functional conformation with a densely packed core that controls their stability. Despite their importance, we lack a quantitative explanation for why all protein cores, regardless of their overall fold, possess the same average packing fraction 〈ϕ〉≈0.55. However, important developments in the physics of jamming in particulate systems can shed light on the packing of protein cores. Here, we extend the framework of jamming to describe core packing in collapsed polymers, as well as in all-atom models of folded proteins. First, we show in a spherical bead-spring polymer model (with and without bond-angle constraints) that as the hydrophobic interactions increase relative to thermal fluctuations, a jamming-like transition occurs when the core packing fraction exceeds ϕc with the same power-law scaling behavior for the potential energy Vr, excess contact number ΔN, and characteristic frequency of the vibrational density of states ω* versus Δϕ=ϕ−ϕc as that for jammed particulate systems. Then, we develop an all-atom model for proteins and find that, above ϕc∼0.55, protein cores undergo a jamming-like transition, but with anomalous power-law scaling for Vr, ΔN, and ω* versus Δϕ. The all-atom protein model remains close to the native protein structure during jamming and accurately refolds from partially unfolded states.

Transcription factors (TFs) regulate gene expression by binding to specific binding sites (TFBSs) in gene promoters. TFBS motifs may contain one or more variable positions. Although the prevailing assumption is that nucleotide variants at such positions are functionally equivalent, there is increasing evidence that such variants play a role in regulation of gene expression. In this article, we propose a method for studying the relationship between the expression of target genes and nucleotide variants in TFBS motifs at a genome-wide scale in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, especially the combinatorial effects of variants at two positions. Our analysis shows that nucleotide variations in more than one-third of variable positions and in 20% of dependent position pairs are highly correlated to gene expression. We define such positions as 'functional'. However, some positions are only functional as dependent pairs, but not individually. In addition, a significant proportion of the functional positions have been well conserved across all yeast-related species studied. We also find that some positions require the presence of co-occurring TFs, while others maintain their functionality in the absence of a co-occurring TF. Our analysis supports the importance of nucleotide variants at variable positions of TFBSs in gene regulation. © The Author(s) 2009. Published by Oxford University Press.

Meteorological influences on dengue transmission in Pakistan

Objective: To identify the influences of local and regional climate phenomena on dengue transmission in Lahore District of Pakistan, from 2006 to 2014. Methods: Time-series models were applied to analyze associations between reported cases of dengue and climatic parameters. The coherence trend of regional climate phenomena(IOD and ENSO) was evaluated with wavelet analysis. Results: The minimum temperature 4 months before the dengue outbreak played the most important role in the Lahore District(P=0.03). A NINO 3.4 index 9 months before the outbreaks exhibited a significant negative effect on dengue transmission(P=0.02). The IOD exhibited a synchronized pattern with dengue outbreak from 2010 to 2012. The ENSO effect(NINO 3.4 index) might have played a more important role after 2012. Conclusions: This study provides preliminary results of climate influences on dengue transmission in the Lahore District of Pakistan. An increasing dengue transmission risk accompanied by frequent climate changes should be noted. Integrating the influences of climate variability into disease prevention strategies should be considered by public health authorities.

Mathematical modeling of the dynamic behavior of physical systems, gives computers that mimic the capabilities to intelligently monitor and predict their evolutionary characteristics. In this paper, we present a system for tracking the time-varying features of non-rigid objects in images of evolving scenes, using the elastic string model of planar contours, which permits the inference and prediction of the quantitative parameters that characterize evolutionary behavior. The goal of our work is to dynamically track non-rigid objects in video sequences, using object alignment techniques based on the properties of the elastic string. We present experimental results of growth cone and neurite tracking in cell growth and motion studies.
