How do reward personalization options influence the public’s willingness to participate in innovation projects? Insights from crowdfunding in Industry 5.0

Purpose: This study aims to examine the influence of reward personalization on financing outcomes in the Industry 5.0 era, where reward-based crowdfunding meets the personalized needs of individuals. Design/methodology/approach: The study utilizes a corpus of 218,822 crowdfunding projects and 1,276,786 reward options on Kickstarter to investigate the effect of reward personalization on investors’ willingness to participate in crowdfunding. The research draws on expectancy theory and employs quantitative and qualitative approaches to measure reward personalization. Quantitatively, the number of reward options is calculated by frequency;whereas text-mining techniques are implemented qualitatively to extract novelty, which serves as a proxy for innovation. Findings: Findings indicate that reward personalization has an inverted U-shaped effect on investors’ willingness to participate, with investors in life-related projects having a stronger need for reward personalization than those interested in art-related projects. The pledge goal and reward text readability have an inverted U-shaped moderating effect on reward personalization from the perspective of reward expectations and reward instrumentality. Originality/value: This study refines the application of expectancy theory to online financing, providing theoretical insight and practical guidance for crowdfunding platforms and financiers seeking to promote sustainable development through personalized innovation. © 2024, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Effects of sentiment discreteness on MOOCs’ disconfirmation: text analytics in online reviews

In Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), online reviews serve as a basis for teachers to improve their courses. The disconfirmation effect of online reviews, i.e. the inconsistency between the level of attention paid to a course factor and the actual weight of that factor’s influence on learner satisfaction, leads to erroneous judgments by teachers. Based on the two-factor theory of emotion, 4,070 courses and 165,705 online reviews are adopted as a corpus to identify the effect of learner sentiment on the disconfirmation effect. The empirical results show that there is a significant disconfirmation effect for negative reviews, but not for positive ones. A fine-grained analysis on negative sentiment finds that reviews containing more sadness and anger sentiments have a stronger disconfirmation effect. A comparison of course types reveals that the disconfirmation effect is stronger for instrument-based courses than that for knowledge-based and practice-based ones. In addition, negative word-of-mouth weakens the disconfirmation effect of sadness and anger reviews and enhances the disconfirmation effect of positive reviews. Further, learner’s reputation weakens the disconfirmation effect of sadness reviews and enhances the disconfirmation effect of positive and anger reviews. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Citizen science, a growing domain that allows public participation in scientific research, plays an increasingly significant role in formal education. Its potential to foster scientific literacy, address environmental issues, and promote sustainability is widely acknowledged. Drawing on the concept mapping approach, this study aims to investigate the factors that could motivate students’ participation in a university-based citizen science project. This methodology enabled substantive insights, driving focused discussions and yielding rich, consolidated outcomes that reflect a strong consensus. These factors encompass the importance of real-world connections, experiential learning, institutional support, autonomy, and global consciousness, extending existing theoretical frameworks. The results illuminate the transformative potential of school-based citizen science and offer valuable insights for designing engaging educational initiatives and strategically allocating resources. Strengthening climate resilience is a global priority, essential for ensuring sustainable development and improving overall well-being. Digital technology and innovation play a pivotal role in enhancing this resilience. This paper aims to examine literature related to the role of technology in supporting climate resilience, as indexed in the Scopus database. A total of 22 articles were reviewed, employing systematic literature review and mapping study methods. The analysis covered publication sources, annual publication trends, contributing countries, research approaches, related issues, and the most cited papers, utilizing Excel 365 for data processing. Additionally, VOSviewer was used to visually analyze keyword occurrences. The review reveals a strong connection between technology and climate resilience, with digital technology being the most prominent focus. Key strategies for strengthening climate resilience include developing tools and methods that facilitate emission reductions, enhance resource efficiency, and improve climate risk management. The findings indicate a growing research trend on climate resilience, predominantly addressing carbon emissions, corporate finance, logistics, drought, asset management, and climate change mitigation. The 22 articles reviewed are categorized into various topics, with digital technology emerging as the most studied area, comprising 6 documents (27.27%). Following this, 4 papers (18.18%) explore the topic of smart agriculture. Other notable topics include energy transition and smart cities, each with 3 papers (13.64%). Additional research themes include green innovation, renewable energy sources, rural water providers, and the role of higher education institutions. Advancing climate resilience necessitates leveraging advanced technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital twins. The advent of Chat-GPT, an AI-driven technology, is reshaping various sectors, particularly higher education. This study, merging the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) with the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), explores the relationship between technology adoption and protection motivation in higher education, addressing the concept of "the (un)knowledgeable, the (un)skilled." Through Structural Equation Modeling, findings from Indonesian participants (N = 445), including students and lecturers, reveal that perceived benefits such as task efficiency, hedonic motivation, performance expectancy, and effort expectancy predominantly motivate Chat-GPT use. Risk perception leans more on perceived vulnerability than severity, with insignificant impact from response cost. Response efficacy and self-efficacy significantly determine intention. Insight from moderating effect of educational level suggest that doctoral-level users demonstrate increased Chat-GPT usage, and gender plays a role in response efficacy and task efficiency. Both educational level and gender actively influence users’ intentions and actual usage behavior. These insights guide educators, policymakers, and institutions in ethically integrating AI, managing evolving risk perceptions, and empowering users in the dynamic AI landscape of higher education. Policymakers (e.g., university boards) are urged to dexterity an ethical framework and authorize in user efficacy to ensure equitable access and benefits from Chat-GPT in education. © 2024 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

This study addresses the Testing Facility Location with Constrained Queue Time Problem. This optimization problem focuses on determining the best places to deploy testing sites and their available testers for infectious diseases, while constraining the maximum time in the queue with a given probability. An integer programming model is introduced and applied to the three biggest counties, in terms of population, of Florida, United States. Moreover, the Monte Carlo method is used to evaluate the model's output, aiming to check if the queueing time constraint is being satisfied. Through the experiments, a testing facility deployment plan can be determined for each county and further validated by the simulation. The results show that the solutions returned by the model behaved successfully when submitted to the Monte Carlo method, not exceeding the time in the queue in more than the predefined probability.

The industry is rapidly transitioning from the 4.0 era to the 5.0 era, prompting renewed interest among scholars in scheduling problems. They allow operations to process and assemble various components simultaneously. This bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive understanding of the diverse research perspectives on the potential challenges of integrated scheduling within the framework. We identified 357 Scopus articles and analysed co-occurrence keyword (CNK) by VOSViewer tools and Global Citation Score (GCS) by Scopus tools. The research data obtained from 1993 to 2023 mainly in the subject areas of Engineering, Computer Science, Maths, and others. CNK identified six cluster keywords, and nine most cited articles based on normalised GCS. These results contribute to our understanding of the development of scheduling algorithms, shifting from an emphasis on manufacturing transfers to contemporary demand-centric research directions. Furthermore, this research provides a valuable perspective for policymakers, plant personnel, and manufacturing managers to make informed decisions. © 2025 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Objective: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of semi-annual application of 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) with and without light curing in arresting dentine caries in primary teeth. Methods: Children aged 5-7 years with at least 1 active dentine carious lesion were randomly allocated into: Group 1 (38% SDF with light curing: applied SDF for 10 seconds and exposed to LED light for 20 seconds) and Group 2 (38% SDF without light curing: applied SDF for 10 seconds and isolated for 20 seconds). Both interventions were repeated every 6 months. At the baseline, demographic data, oral health-related behaviors and clinical parameters of the children were collected. The activity of carious lesion was assessed using the visual-tactile method and adverse effects, if any, were recorded at both 6-month and 12-month follow-up periods by the same examiner. Intention-to-treat analysis was employed to analyze the data. Results: At baseline, 40 children (218 lesions) and 37 children (261 lesions) were recruited into Group 1 and Group 2. There were no significant differences between the 2 groups in terms of demographic data, oral health-related behaviors, and clinical parameters of the children at baseline (P > .05). After 12 months, 66 out of 77 children (85.74%) remained in the study. There was no significant difference in caries arrest rate between Group 1 (74.8%) and Group 2 (69.0%) with P = .161. Conclusion: The semi-annual application of 38% SDF with or without light curing is equally effective in arresting dentine carious lesions in primary teeth. The addition of light curing to SDF-treated teeth has no significant effect in arresting dental caries in primary teeth. © 2025 The Authors

The video gaming industry offers richer experiences through increasingly complex game mechanics, often hindering learnability. This research explores integrating an LLM-based chatbot, “Daisy,” in Stardew Valley, a narrative-rich role-playing game where learnability is critical. Over three weeks, 24 participants—14 new and 10 experienced players—engaged in a diary study and post-interviews. Analysis of diaries, chat logs, gameplay videos, and interviews revealed three themes: seeking information support, playing with chatbots, and addressing practical challenges. Findings show Daisy's potential to enhance learnability through natural conversations, fostering immersion and emotional engagement, though issues like hallucinations and context awareness require improvement. This work highlights preliminary insights for integrating LLMs into narrative-rich games.

The strategic utilization of technology to enhance industrial competitiveness and product quality is pivotal for economic growth. As universities own more inventions, collaborative efforts between industry and academia become essential for regional competitiveness and overall economic advancement. This study explores Taiwan’s systematic approach to upgrading its infrastructure, emphasizing the significance of University–Industry Collaborations (UIC) in realizing Industry 4.0. Government strategies and policy decisions emerge as key drivers in fostering successful collaborative projects between industry and university teams. The relaxation of restrictions, particularly related to part-time teachers and technology transfer, along with the promotion of corporate programs, effective use of public funding, and the development of an innovative digital platform system for UIC, collectively contribute to establishing a robust university–industry cooperation mechanism.
