Temperature effects on development and lifelong behavior in zebrafish

In recent decades, global warming has intensified temperature changes, placing substantial pressure on organism survival. Understanding how temperature variations impact development and behavior is crucial for conservation strategies. This study examined how temperature affects zebrafish embryo development and behavior, focusing on mRNA expression changes under thermal challenges. Zebrafish embryos were reared at 27 °C (control), 22 °C, and 30 °C, monitored from 24 to 120 hpf for structural development, and tested for optomotor responses at 7 dpf. Juvenile (30 dpf) and adult (90 dpf) fish reared at 27 °C were subjected to acute temperature shifts (22 °C and 30 °C for 2 h), followed by behavioral assessments and brain sampling for hsp90a and hspb1 mRNA expression analysis. Survival rates were significantly lower at 22 °C, with higher hatching rates at 30 °C but decreased at 22 °C. Developmental abnormalities varied: head malformations were more common at 30 °C, pericardial and yolk sac edema at 22 °C, and tail malformations at both extremes. Optomotor responses were impaired in fish from 22 °C. Social and aggressive behaviors were mostly unaffected, but fish from extreme temperatures showed increased risk-taking and reduced response to alarm substances. hsp90a mRNA expression was elevated in fish raised at 30 °C and those exposed to the 30 °C challenge, while hspb1 mRNA expression remained stable across temperatures. Cooling environments detrimentally affected embryo growth and survival, while warmer conditions induced pronounced growth defects. Elevated temperatures posed greater risks, triggering heightened hsp90a expression crucial for stress adaptation. Understanding thermal variation impacts on embryo development is crucial for mitigating climate change effects on species' viability and reproduction. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Symmetric diblock copolymers undergo a disorder to order transition below a microphase separation transition temperature. In this temperature range the structure is characterized by alternating lamellae of thickness L. In thin film geometries, the lamellae are oriented normal to the substrate if there is a preferential interaction between either of the block constituents and the substrate/copolymer or copolymer/vacuum interfaces. Depending on the relation between the film thickness and L, the topography of the film might comprise of holes, islands or spinodal-like structures. We show that in a polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) diblock copolymer of molecular weight 20, 000 g/mol, above the microphase separation transition temperature, the topography of the film depends on the thickness. A heirarchy of bicontinuous patterns and holes is observed with increasing film thickness for films thinner than 35 nm.

A rapid,precise method for identifying waterborne pathogens is critically needed for effective disinfection and better ***,conventional methods,such as culture-based counting,generally suffer from slow detection times and low ***,we developed a rapid detection method for tracing waterborne pathogens by an innovative optofluidic platform,a plasmonic bacteria on a nanoporous mirror,that allows effective hydrodynamic cell trapping,enrichment of pathogens,and optical signal *** designed and simulated the integrated optofluidic platform to maximize the enrichment of the bacteria and to align bacteria on the nanopores and plasmonic mirror via hydrodynamic cell *** nanoparticles are self-assembled to form antenna arrays on the surface of bacteria,such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa,by replacing citrate with hydroxylamine hydrochloride in order to amplify the signal of the plasmonic optical *** to the synergistic contributions of focused light via the nanopore geometry,self-assembled nanoplasmonic optical antennas on the surface of bacteria,and plasmonic mirror,we obtain a sensitivity of detecting *** as low as 102 cells/ml via surface-enhanced Raman *** believe that our label-free strategy via an integrated optofluidic platform will pave the way for the rapid,precise identification of various pathogens.

An effort to obtain alternative energy is still interesting subject to be studied, especially production of biogas from agriculture waste. This paper was an overview of the latest development of biogas researches from rice husk waste by Solid State Anaerobic Digestion (SSAD). The main obstacle of biogas production from rice husk waste was the lignin content which is very difficult degraded by microbes. Various pretreatments have been conducted, either physically, chemically as well as biologically. The SSAD method was an attractive option because of the low water content of rice husk waste. The biogas yield by SSAD method gave more attractive result compared to Liquid Anaerobic Digestion (LAD) method. Various studies were still conducted in batch mode laboratory scale and also has not found optimum operating conditions. Research on a larger scale such as bench and pilot scale with continuous systems will be an increase trend in the future research. © 2018 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

The microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) method is capable of synthesizing various forms of carbon allotropes such as diamond, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and diamondlike carbon (DLC) while varying the growth parameters or utilizing substrate coated with catalytic thin film. In this article, needlelike carbon nanostructures (CNs) were synthesized utilizing high power (5 kW) and high working pressure (120 Torr) MPCVD on a thin catalytic film of nickel with a diffusion barrier layer of titanium on a micropatterned silicon substrate. The effects of in situ doping by trimethylboron (TMB) on the morphologies and field emission properties of the CNs were also investigated. Straight, needlelike CNs with random orientation were obtained for 15 min growth time with or without TMB doping. However, the CNs appear to transform into diamondlike nanocrystals after prolonged growth of 30 min with TMB doping. Unlike MPCVD grown CNTs, it was found that the CNs have strong adhesion to the substrate and could withstand postgrowth processing such as ultrasonic agitation cleaning in solvents. Field emission tests performed show that in situ TMB doping of the patterned needlelike CNs lowers the turn-on field of the cathode. A vacuum field emission triode with self-aligned gate utilizing CNs as the field emitter is also fabricated. © 2006 American Vacuum Society.

Heavy metals are the most hazardous water pollutants, with severe health and environmental consequences. Among these, mercuric (Hg²⁺) ions are known to cause detrimental health issues in both humans and aquatic life. Due to this, several analytical techniques have been devised to detect and quantify the amount of this ion. However, most of these require advanced instrumentation, prolonged analysis time, and sample preparation. In this study, a low-cost and highly reusable colorimetric probe was developed by grafting porphyrin to poly(ethylene terephthalate) sheets using an oxazoline polymer as covalent adhesive. Upon exposure to trace amounts of Hg²⁺ in solution, the fabricated material visually transitioned from faint brownish pink to green by the complexation mechanism. Additionally, the transparency of this probe allowed the quantitative spectrophotometric determination of the Hg²⁺ concentration in aqueous samples. It was also shown that the material is highly stable, which can be reused for more than 50 times without significant decline in its performance, hence, making it suitable for the onsite monitoring of mercuric ion contamination in different bodies of water. © 2024 The Authors. It is known that there are many ways to manage food waste, however, no specific work has ever been reported on the easiness and economics of treatment mainly at the source. This study hopes to fulfill the gap by constructing a novel waste bin layered with plastic that can continuously accommodate and decompose food waste produced at the source. After several months of use, the bin has been found to be effective and no foul odor has been detected at least 1 ft away. In addition, produced leachate has been found to be nontoxic and can be used to water plants as evidenced by the pH measurements. Furthermore, introduction of additional features such as covering the bin with a painted cloth and putting a chimney on its top has been observed to enhance the performance. © 2018 The Authors

Anaerobic digestion (AD) process has been generally applied in factories for wastewater treatment and energy recovery. For the AD processes, the continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) with recirculation are typically applied in industries for methane production from wastewater treatment. Since the recycle stream affects the inlet concentration of the reactor, the control performance of traditional PI and PID controllers used to manipulate control actuators may be limited. Additionally, the process control loops related to biochemical reactions are generally employed the operational experiences without process dynamic consideration. A control system based on input/output (I/O) linearization control technique for an anaerobic digestion (AD) process was developed in this work. The control system applied the concept of the I/O linearization technique, which followed dynamic behaviors of the reactor with a two-step (acidogenesis-methanogenesis) kinetic model. The volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration was regulated by manipulation of the dilution rate to achieve the requested trajectories. Control performances of the closed-loop system were investigated by a simulation under servo and regulatory problems. The simulation results showed that the developed control scheme successfully forced the controlled output to achieve the desired set points and handled the introduced control problems. © 2020 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

The current buildings insulating materials in the construction market, which mainly consist of synthetic materials, have a high performance in thermal resistivity. However, they negatively impact the human health and the environment, thereby finding bio-insulating materials is necessary. This research investigates the thermal conductivity and physical performance of oil palm trunks/ramie fibers reinforced biopolymer hybrid composites for thermal insulation of buildings. The hybrid composites were further prepared using oil palm trunk particles, ramie fiber as the reinforcement, and tapioca starch as a biopolymer binder. All the manufactured hybrid composites exhibited thermal conductivity in a range of 0.0723 W/mK to 0.1344 W/mK and density of 732 kg/m3 to 801 kg/m3, respectively. Sample C1, with a density of 732 kg/m3 had the lowest thermal conductivity of (0.0723 W/mK). Moreover, the minimum absorbed water (53.66%) and thickness swelling (21.36%) were found in the C1 sample hybrid composites after 24-hours immersion in water. Thermal conductivity performance was influenced positively by physical properties. Therefore, the results of this research show that waste oil palm trunks and ramie fiber could be used as a thermal insulating material for buildings. © 2022
