The utilization of water treatment sludge (i.e., ferric sludge) was explored as the oxygen carrier (OC) for chemical looping combustion (CLC) of municipal solid waste (MSW) syngas. The performance of ferric sludge (FS) in CLC and simultaneous HCl removal was evaluated in a bench-scale fluidized bed, and was compared with iron ore (IO) as a benchmarked OC. The results show that FS (92%) performed better than IO (82%) in terms of syngas combustion efficiency and FS was able to remove HCl (77% removal efficiency) while IO was unable to remove any HCl. Comparison of reaction temperature reveals that FS performed better at lower CLC temperature between 800 °C and 850 °C. Agglomeration was observed when FS was used in extended CLC cycles. Thus, investigation of using inert a-Al2O3 support together with FS for extended CLC cycles was investigated. Agglomeration and sintering were drastically reduced and good combustion efficiency of 88% for H2 and 74% for CO was attained. Carbon footprint assessment illustrated that FS was superior as a greener material based on global warming potential of 20 and 100 years. Conversion of FS as an OC were characterized with 104.23 and 108.0 kgCO2/t lower than IO for GWP-20 and GWP-100, exhibiting the competitiveness in the usage of waste-derived material in CLC. Hence, FS can be considered as a novel, cost-effective, and greener OC for CLC. The co-utilization of waste-derived material and waste-derived syngas through CLC would be an integrated solution for improved circularity and sustainability. © 2023, The Authors. Contamination of aquatic and terrestrial organisms by Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), emerging contaminants, is widespread, as these compounds are present in water, soil, air, and food, owing to their environmental persistence. PFAS exposure induces biochemical process alterations associated with the disruption of the antioxidant defense system in several species. This review aims to discuss how PFAS-induced antioxidant system alterations lead to changes in biochemical processes in different organisms exposed to these pollutants. This disruption, then leads to an imbalance in antioxidant defense systems, contributing to the formation of reactive oxidative species (ROS), which, in turn, can be exacerbate oxidative stress, induce cellular damage, enhance lipid peroxidation, destabilize lysosomal membranes, and cause genotoxic effects, ultimately compromising DNA integrity. In acute tests, PFAS have led to mortality, growth inhibition, diminished behavioral and locomotor abilities, and reproductive impairment. PFAS-induced effects differ with varying species or types of substances, and further bioaccumulation through food chains exacerbates environmental contamination, carrying considerable risks. These findings demonstrate the complex and enduring impact of PFAS on environmental health, emphasizing the importance of this review in corroborating studies on sub-lethal toxicity in exposed organisms and how these effects reflect on the environment. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Phosphorus (P) recovery from sewage sludge (SS) (or its ash/char) is challenging due to the presence of heavy metals (HMs) in SS. This study proposed the integration of SS, alum sludge (AS), sequential wet extraction, and pyrolysis for P recovery without simultaneous HM extraction. SS+AS mixture (P:Al molar ratio = 3:1) was first acid pretreated to obtain amended SS, then pyrolyzed, and finally, P was extracted from the char using an alkali. Pyrolysis was conducted at low (400˚C), medium (600˚C), and high (900˚C) temperatures. The highest alkaline P recovery efficiency was 88% from the amended SS char, while 32% from the unamended SS char (both prepared at 400˚C). Overall, the highest P recovery in the amended process was 48% higher than the unamended process despite 11% P loss during acidic pretreatment. Standards measurements and testing (SMT) protocol and solid-state NMR (31P and 27Al) analyses revealed that acidic pretreatment of SS with AS induced apatite phosphate (AP) to non-apatite inorganic phosphate (NAIP) conversion in SS. As NAIP is more soluble in alkali than AP and HMs, higher alkaline P recovery was achieved for amended SS char than unamended SS char, without HM contamination. However, higher pyrolytic temperatures impaired P recovery due to the immobilization of P in the char carbon matrix and the formation of recalcitrant P phases. These findings were corroborated by complementary characterization techniques such as XPS, XRD, and FTIR. Some major HMs in SS and AS were concentrated in char, except Zn, which partially volatilized above 600˚C. This study demonstrated the applicability of AS for extracting P from SS, offering a potential pathway for the synergetic management of sludge waste streams. © 2023, The Authors. Multimodal facilities are being built in a majority of urban areas to accommodate both motorized and non-motorized traffic. The resulting transportation system is susceptible to complex interactions between different modes and users. These complex interactions are hard to quantify and capture on a regular basis. There is a need to rely on a microsimulation platform to replicate such real-world scenarios and forecast future conditions. This study focuses on assessing the effect of heterogeneous traffic conditions involving multiple modes like light rail transit (LRT), walking, bicycling, and motorized traffic on vehicle delay at intersections using Vissim traffic simulation software. A 2.5-mile urban arterial corridor comprising of seven at-grade and two grade-separated signalized intersections along US-29 route in the city of Charlotte, NC, USA was chosen for analysis and modeling. Base simulation model was developed by replicating the traffic scenario for the year 2018 (without LRT and non-motorized traffic). External controllers like VisVAP and Viswalk were used to assign signal priority and model heterogenous traffic conditions. The vehicle operational performance of the corridor improved along the major street after the addition of the LRT. An increase in vehicle delay on the major street was observed with an increase in the non-motorized traffic. Contrarily, the operational performance of the cross-streets at at-grade intersections did not see any significant change due to the addition of non-motorized traffic. The proposed framework assists planners to assess the impact of adding a new transit system like LRT and associated non-motorized traffic on the urban corridor. © 2022

Optimization of vertical spacing between each row of a vertical shelf to meet minimum sunlight requirement for strawberries

Vertical farming (VF) allows for more plants to be cultivated in a particular land area, maximizing land-use efficiency. VF employs multileveled shelves enabling crops to be planted at each level. This paper aims to develop an optimization model that could generate a required setup of a vertical shelf that would meet the sunlight requirements of strawberries. Firstly, the simulation model was developed using Rhino (Rhinoceros) software with Grasshopper plugin, which can predict the sunlight availability at each VF shelf level. The model is validated by the experiment in Chiang Mai province, Thailand, at an elevation higher than 310 m above mean sea level. The experiment set up of the VF shelf with three levels was constructed, and the solar radiation values were recorded and validated against the radiation predicted by the model. The validated model is used to simulate the sunlight radiation on each level of the shelf for different shelf designs with varying vertical spacings between each level. These sets of predicted radiation values and vertical spacings are used to train the ANN (Artificial Neural Network) model. The ANN simulation model was developed using MATLAB software with Simulink and Neural Net Fitting App. The trained ANN model has an MSE (Mean Squared Error) of 0.00019621 and an R (the correlation coefficient) value of 0.9992. As a result, the optimization model could successfully give out the vertical spacing between each level of the VF shelf with an input of desired sunlight availability on each level. For the PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) of 600 µmol/m2/s on both levels, the spacing should be 51.34 cm from the top to the middle (y1) and 48.69 cm from the middle to the bottom (y2). To receive 600 and 500 µmol/m2/s on the middle and bottom level respectively, the levels should be placed 66.77 cm (y1) and 30.89 cm (y2) apart.

Study region: The Choushui River Fan, Taiwan. Study focus: Groundwater overdraft has led to not only groundwater depletion but also environmental disasters, such as subsidence and seawater intrusion in the Choushui River Alluvial Fan, Taiwan. The influence of land subsidence is gradually shifting from the coast to the center of the fan and threatening Taiwan high-speed rail. However, it remains a great challenge to manage and model the groundwater aquifer due to numerous unregulated wells. This study maps and locates private wells using deep learning technologies. We trained and validated convolutional-based deep learning neural networks (DNNs), using street view images. We applied the DNNs to a land subsidence area along the Taiwan high-speed rail, termed the Golden Corridor in Taiwan. The results showed that DNNs can recognize pumping wells with at least 90% accuracy. The testing cases showed their capability to recall all the pumping wells in three road segments along the Golden Corridor. Finally, we spatially estimated potential pumping of a subsidence area using the fine-trained DNNs. New hydrological insights for the region: Given the prevalence of unknown private pumping in the Choushui River Fan, our image data-driven computer vision approach not only eases labor-intensive private well investigations but also advances hydrologic understanding for groundwater modeling. We enhance comprehension of unknown sinks and provide their spatial distribution to improve groundwater modeling. © 2023 The Authors

Agribusiness has a significant role in the life of billions of people and is an essential component in the economy of many countries. In Brazil agribusiness is one of the most prominent components in the economy and it accounted for 21% of the Gross Domestic Product in 2016. The soil is a non-renewable resource, and its adequate management becomes increasingly relevant to maintain its fertility and ensure the production of food to supply the population and industries in the food sector. The use of chemical fertilizers and mineral correctives is a requirement of modern agriculture and is practically indispensable for the management of crops. However, it is not an environmental friendly management technique method and may cause economic losses. On the other hand, there is an acknowledgment of nature-based solutions that contribute to improving soil quality while reducing the environmental burden from modern agrosystem. The choice for utilizing rice husk as biomass feedstock in this research is based on the current reality of Brazil, where there is an annual production of approximately 11.7 million tons of rice, from which around 20% become residue. Considering that Brazil has large areas of cultivation and that agriculture residues are still underutilized, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of biochar obtained from rice husk in the fertility of soil based on two parameters, which are porosity and water holding capacity. The conversion of agricultural residues into soil conditioners, i.e., closing the cycle of nutrients from farm to land, is an interesting option for sustainable resource management, which should also encompass the environmental, social and economic aspects. © 2019 ETA-Florence Renewable Energies.

Sewage sludge (SS) is a reclaimable phosphorus (P) source and is a potential alternative to the natural phosphate mineral. This study explored the alkaline leaching of P from alum sludge (AS)-amended dry SS, with or without the acidic pretreatment. The highest orthophosphate (ortho-P) alkaline recovery was 74% for the acid-pretreated SS+AS mix. Amending SS with AS averted the loss of ortho-P during the acidic pretreatment by 59% compared to the reference case (unamended SS). Standards Measurements and Testing (SMT) analysis revealed apatite to non-apatite inorganic phosphorus conversion during the acidic pretreatment, especially in the amended SS. This conversion was due to the dissolution of Ca-P and adsorption of dissolved ortho-P on Al(OH)3 during the acidic pretreatment. Visual MINTEQ modelling, solid-state NMR (31P, 27Al and 31P-1H CP-HETCOR) and Al 2p XPS data indicated the high abundance of Al(OH)3(s), which enhanced the ortho-P adsorption. There was no formation of AlPO4, possibly because the acid-sludge mixture reached the metastable equilibrium and not the true equilibrium during the acidic pretreatment. 31P liquid NMR, SEM, FTIR and XRD provided additional insight into the effects of acidic pretreatment on sludges. Overall, Ca-P to Al-P conversion enhanced the alkaline ortho-P recovery by about 12% compared to the reference case (unamended + non-pretreated). This study demonstrated that P leaching efficiency from SS can be improved (with appropriate process modifications) irrespective of the intrinsic property of SS. © 2022, The Authors. This research focuses on examining the association between on-time performance (OTP) and road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics to identify relevant external factors for proactive and reliable public transportation system planning. The analysis was conducted at a bus stop level. Bus arrival/departure data from the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) was obtained. The road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics were captured within 0.25-mile and 0.50-mile buffers. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to understand the association between OTP and road network, demographic, socioeconomic, and land use characteristics by day of the week and time of the day. The results show that OTP is associated with external factors such as the number of signalized or cul-de-sac/dead-end intersections, number of lanes, network density, population, income (median and total), and land use types related to residential and commercial/employment purposes within the bus stop vicinity. The findings provide vital insights for transit agencies to enhance scheduling, service and maximize benefits, effectively utilize available resources, plan, and provide equitable services to all riders. © 2023 The Author(s)
