In many flood simulations,critical rainfall duration,defined as duration of rainfall which causes a critical flood,is assumed to be ***,in some area,the critical rainfall duration varies upon its magnitude and assuming the fixed critical rainfall duration may underestimate an extreme peak *** middle and lower Yom basin,Thailand,is one of the areas where a larger flood appears to coincide with longer critical rainfall *** this study,we have investigated the variation of critical rainfall duration in that *** conceptual model was developed from HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS *** upstream and downstream parts of the area were calibrated ***,uniform 2-,5-,and 10-year rainfalls with 24-,48-,and 72-hour durations were *** model successfully reproduced the variation of critical rainfall duration as 48 hours for 2-and 5-year rainfalls and 72 hours for 10-year *** variation is caused by a high percolation rate over the upstream *** this percolation,some portion of rainfall over the upstream part is ***,most of the flood water comes from the downstream part which has short travel ***,when the rainfall is larger,the influence of percolation is less.

The effects of vehicle-structure interaction have a significant effect on the dynamic responses of both the vehicle and the structure with several applications within the railways field. When the vehicle loads are capable of producing accumulated strains sufficient to cause damage to the structure, the dynamic responses change completely. By crossing a railway bridge, the vehicle is subjected to the effects of track irregularities. The vehicle's movement on the bridge is already a dynamic action on the structure. However, the irregularities of the track tend to excite the vehicle dynamically which in turns triggers additional vibrations in the structure apart from those produced by its own movement, increasing the structural degree of damage. This modifies the structural dynamic responses, increasing the magnitude and the oscillations within the same time interval especially at critical speeds of the vehicle, capable of provoking some resonance. Apart from changing the displacements, velocities and accelerations, the damage alters the structural natural frequencies of vibration. It is not possible to analyse such effects with linear dynamic models. This paper evaluates, using the finite element method, the nonlinear dynamic effects in a reinforced concrete bridge where the degree of damage is altered over time using a damage mechanics procedure. © civil-Comp Press, 2016.

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii as an opportunistic pathogen in wound infections raises significant concerns due to its antibiotic resistance and biofilm-mediated antibiotic tolerance. This underscores the urgent need to explore an alternative approach to effectively managing wound infections caused by MDR A. baumannii. In this study, combining subinhibitory concentrations of curcumin (25 µg/ml) or chitosan (156 µg/ml) with photodynamic therapy-PDT (10 J/cm2) resulted in a significant reduction of planktonic viabilities and biofilm biovolume of MDR A. baumannii clinical isolates in vitro. In murine A. baumannii-associated wound infection, a combination of curcumin (25 µg/ml) or chitosan (156 µg/ml) with PDT (10 J/cm2) resulted in complete bacterial eradication with wound healing at Day 15 of post-treatments with these combination therapies. Our study demonstrated that combining curcumin or chitosan with PDT at their subinhibitory concentrations represents a promising alternative strategy as localized therapy for effectively managing A. baumannii-associated wound infection. © 2025 The Authors

Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) pose a growing global health threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where limited surveillance capacity and under-resourced healthcare systems hinder timely detection and response. Migratory birds play a significant role in the transboundary spread of AIVs, yet data from key regions along migratory flyways remain sparse. To address these surveillance gaps, we conducted a study between December 2021 and February 2023 using fresh bird guano collected across 10 countries in the Global South. Here, we show that remote, uninhabited regions in previously unsampled areas harbor a high diversity of AIV strains, with H5N1 emerging as the most prevalent. Some of these H5N1 samples also carry mutations that may make them less responsive to the antiviral drug oseltamivir. Our findings documented the presence of AIVs in several underrepresented regions and highlighted critical transmission hotspots where viral evolution may be accelerating. These results underscore the urgent need for geographically targeted surveillance to detect emerging variants, inform public health interventions, and reduce the risk of zoonotic spillover.

Wind-driven rain incidence parameters obtained by hygrothermal simulation

The association of rain and wind composes wind-driven rain (WDR), and its incidence may be crucial to the emergence of anomalies on the facades of buildings. Moisture from the WDR can influence the humidification and drying process, therefore the durability and hygrothermal performance are conditioned by the amount of incident water. The quantification of WDR can be an indispensable tool for understanding its related phenomena and the service life of buildings. The most widely used methods of quantification are the semi-empirical, with theoretical basis, but coefficients partially determined from measurements. These methods may take into account the building exposure conditions related to the envelope, solar orientation, height of the building, and other parameters. In this context, in order to contribute to the studies on quantification of WDR, the purpose of this paper is to apply hygrothermal simulation software WUFI^® on quantification of WDR focusing on buildings degradation of Brasília-Brazil. For the simulation it was used a Typical Meteorological Year file with the wind and precipitation measurement data indispensable for simulation. The quantification of incidence of WDR considered the orientations North, Northeast, East, Southeast, South, Southwest, West, and Northwest. The use of semi-empirical WUFI^® quantification method allowed finding the highest values and consequently critical orientations North, Northwest, and Northeast, moreover, this results showed the relation with the degradation of facades in these orientations. WUFI proved to be an easy, fast and efficient method of WDR quantification, without hiding seasonal weather effects. © 2016, Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

The ceramic coating systems applied to building facades have relevant aesthetic value and protection functions. The architectural and environmental conditions can greatly influence the degradation process of the facades, which may pose risks and compromise the durability and service life of the building and its components. The degradation process of facades changes according to the region where it takes place. To this end, the present study aims to determine damage intensity and distribution in the different regions of the facade. This study investigated the facades of three buildings that are part of the Materials Testing Laboratory (LEM) database of the Universidade de Brasilia. The degradation was quantified using a methodology proposed by Silva (2014) to generate a degradation index expressed in m². After the quantification of damages, few indexes associated with the percentage of degraded area, applied to the facade regions, are presented. These weighted indexes allowed to standardize the values observed in each region. Obtaining these indices is fundamental to the study of degradation. The results show that for a comparative analysis between the regions, the observed values should be corrected for the proportionality of the area of each region in relation to the total area of the facade. It was also noted that the continuous walls are the most affected regions, but they do not always present the highest damage intensity. © 2016, Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Infrared thermography is an evaluation technique that helps to identify anomalies and can provide information on their incidence and severity. The aim of this study is to apply quantitative thermography to study a case of severe cracks in facade analyzing the evolution of temperatures and Delta-T. The temperature evolution was studied over a day. There was sun incidence occurring during part of the day, allowing to calculate and assess the evolution of the associated temperatures. Thermograms were acquired hourly during the study period. The highest temperatures were observed at 12:00 noon, and the larger Delta-T between 10:00 and 12:00. There were differences between the Delta-T profiles among the three regions studied. The best time for analysis is when Delta-T is higher. Cracks with higher Delta-T were considered more degraded, and generalized branched cracks did not allow a comparative conclusion.

Glutaraldehyde (GA) has been used extensively as a biocide in hydraulic fracturing fluids leading to the contamination of the compound in flowback and produced waters. Photolysis of GA in water was performed under UV irradiation using monochromatic lamps with a wavelength of 254 nm. The results indicated that photolysis of GA followed pseudo-first order kinetics. GA can be photolyzed by UV at all studied conditions;however, the degradation rates of GA were different at different light intensities, pHs, initial GA concentrations and salt concentrations. The degradation rate of GA increased with increasing incident light intensity and decreasing pH. Increasing in initial GA concentration resulted in decreasing rate of GA. At lower salt concentrations, notable retardation of GA degradation rate was observed. Quenching experiments were also conducted to further explore the mechanisms of GA photolysis. Higher molecular weight compounds were identified as the main photolytic byproducts. Copyright ©2016 Water Environment Federation.

Small hydropower spot prediction using SWAT and a diversion algorithm, case study: Upper Citarum Basin

Small-Scale Hydropower (SHP) had been important electric energy power source in Indonesia. Indonesia is vast countries, consists of more than 17.000 islands. It has large fresh water resource about 3 m of rainfall and 2 m of runoff. Much of its topography is mountainous, remote but abundant with potential energy. Millions of people do not have sufficient access to electricity, some live in the remote places. Recently, SHP development was encouraged for energy supply of the places. Development of global hydrology data provides opportunity to predict distribution of hydropower potential. In this paper, we demonstrate run-of-river type SHP spot prediction tool using SWAT and a river diversion algorithm. The use of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) with input of CFSR (Climate Forecast System Re-analysis) of 10 years period had been implemented to predict spatially distributed flow cumulative distribution function (CDF). A simple algorithm to maximize potential head of a location by a river diversion expressing head race and penstock had been applied. Firm flow and power of the SHP were estimated from the CDF and the algorithm. The tool applied to Upper Citarum River Basin and three out of four existing hydropower locations had been well predicted. The result implies that this tool is able to support acceleration of SHP development at earlier phase.

Dry storage of used nuclear fuel is an integral part of the fuel cycle and methods to inspect the canisters that confine the used fuel rods are being established. The challenges for inspection systems include geometric constraints, elevated temperature, and radiation. A novel robotic inspection system focusing on stress corrosion cracking capable of in-situ surface composition characterization and crack detection is under development. The delivery system, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy for surface composition, and ultrasonic guided waves for crack detection are summarized herein.
