This paper presents a smart antenna system using a combination of nonconventional least square (NCLS) optimization and direct data domain least square (D3LS) for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation and beamforming, respectively. In the proposed system, NCLS optimization is utilized to estimate DOA of incoming signal first. The estimated DOA is then assisted for initial processing of D3LS in beamforming. The performance in term of estimated signal amplitude and estimated DOA of the proposed system is evaluated via simulations.

This paper presents the results of an on-going investigation into the use of an anthropomorphic robotic manipulator with three degrees of freedom (two DOF shoulder joint and one DOF elbow joint) for rehabilitation of a human upper arm. The reduction to three DOF for this manipulator allows for a simpler project, leading to a lower cost of production and maintenance: important factors for its intended wide-spread use in financially restricted areas, e.g., the state of Goiás, Brazil. The project focuses on determining the variations observed for a class of trajectories known as functional movements. These functional movements are trajectories realized when a limb is used for a given function, e.g., combing the hair. In this present paper we use three functional movements: hair combing, bringing a cup to one's mouth and a waving movement. We describe how these functional movements are acquired from test subjects and compared in computer simulations to the equivalent functional movements of our proposed reduced-order anthropomorphic manipulator. Our research indicates that the errors incurred in using a reduced-order shoulder joint are well within the observed variation in the functional movements of human subjects, when compared among different subjects and also between similar functional movements of any one given human subject. Despite the limitations, the proposed manipulator would be viable for rehabilitation of patients in early phases of a stroke, at lower cost of production.

The research proposes monitoring network traffic to preventing malicious attacks. It uses statistical theory and fuzzy control architecture to create a single transmission behavior. It will establish a normal transmission behavior module in order to achieve network monitoring and an alert mechanism. The mechanism tries to improve the abnormal behavior detection rate. The study is divided into three parts. The first part uses tools to simulate detection and aggressive behavior. According to many defensive measure reports, we will build a detection mechanism. The third part uses statistical theory and fuzzy control to monitor each network flow. The mechanism will preprocess denial of service attacks for an intrusion detection system.

This paper describes an intelligent approach based on agents that are able to drive and coordinate trains on stretches of railway line containing a crossing loop. Halts close to or even in crossing loops lead to increased consumption of fossil fuels, longer journey times and exhaustion of track capacity. In this paper the agents make use of a set of resources - railway line characteristics, train characteristics, driving rules and information about other trains - to generate their action policy. The agents perception is guaranteed by a set of sensors that provide data such as speed, position and information about the line. The tasks that the agent performs include carrying out actions such as increasing or reducing the speed of the train. The main objective of this study was to avoid unnecessary halts, which are the main cause of increased fuel consumption and journey time. Our results show that strong reductions can be made in terms of fuel consumption (average reduction of 25.5%), journey time (average reduction of 22.5%) and exhaustion of track capacity. Simulations were performed in which traditional driving techniques, with halts at several points along the stretch of track, were compared with driving performed by the multi-agent system, without any halts.

The spread of telemedicine systems increases every day. The systems and PACS based on DICOM images has become common. This rise reflects the need to develop new storage systems, more efficient and with lower computational costs. With this in mind, this article discusses a study for application in NetCDF data format as the basic platform for storage of DICOM images. The study case comparison adopts an ordinary database, the HDF5 and the NetCDF to storage the medical images. Empirical results, using a real set of images, indicate that the time to retrieve images from the NetCDF for large scale images has a higher latency compared to the other two methods. In addition, the latency is proportional to the file size, which represents a drawback to a telemedicine system that is characterized by a large amount of large image files.
