Once Wireless Local Networks (WLAN) and Bluetooth devices share the same frequency band (ISM) there is a potential risk of interference if they are supposed to operate close to each other. Additionally, the signal fading effects on mobile Bluetooth networks may deeply affect the overall performance. That is why the use of strategies that minimize transmission on channels with great interference or severe fading is so important. This paper proposes and investigates the use of parameter m of the Nakagami distribution, as the channel estimation metric. We observed that parameter m may provide faster estimates on the channel condition than the bit error rate metric. This metric is applied in a new scheduling algorithm for Bluetooth piconets. Simulation results showing the performance of the algorithm for different traffic conditions are eventually presented. © 2005 by International Federation for Information Processing.

This paper- studies different error control schemes in wireless sensor networks with Bluetooth technology. The tradeoff between reliability and energy consumption of Bluetooth packets are analyzed, using different error control techniques, such as retransmission and channel coding The AUX1 packet is utilized for custom coding and also are proposed adaptive techniques based on the number of hops of the network. The wireless channel is modeled with Rayleigh fading. The results obtained may be used as references to determine the packet type in a sensor application. © 2005 IEEE.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small endogenous RNAs of ∼22nt that act as direct post-transcriptional regulators in animals and plants. MicroRNAs generally perform a function by binding to the complementary site on the 3' untranslated region of Its target gene and especially the Smers on the 5' part of miRNA seems important as a seed. Computational methods for miRNA target prediction have been focusing on this seed region, but recent researches revealed that the specificity of the seed region may be sharply decreased even by a point mutation. In this paper, we present a kernel method for miRNA target prediction in animals, which improves the prediction performance with biologically sensible data and position-based features reflecting the way of miRNA:mRNA pairing mechanism. In building a training dataset, we choose experimentally verified data only to improve the quality of dataset by excluding randomly synthesized one and consequently to make the result of learning valid. We use sensitivity, specificity, and area under ROC curve as performance measures of our algorithm and compare the results of various dataset configurations. The overall results were 92.1% in sensitivity, 83.3% in specificity, and 0.931 in area under ROC curve. With position-based features, an increase of 3.3% in sensitivity and 1.6% in specificity were observed. In the feature selection experiment to investigate the role of individual position-based features, the result suggests that pairing at positions 4, 5, 6 of the seed part is of greater importance than the other positions together with the general stability of the seed part. © 2005 IEEE.

L-system is a grammar-like formalism introduced to simulate the development of organisms. The L-system grammar can be viewed as a sort of genetic information that will be used to generate a specific structure. However, throughout development, the string (genetic information) that will effectively be used to 'draw' the phenotype of an individual is a result of the derivation of the L-system grammar. This work investigates the effect of applying a genetic programming approach to evolve derived L-systems instead of evolving the L-system grammar. The crossing over of plants from different species results in hybrid plants resembling a 'Frankstree', i.e. plants resultant from phenotypically different parents that present unusual body structures. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

The present paper proposes a new cluster validity measure as an additional criterion to help the decision making process in fuzzy cluster analysis. This measure, named Fuzzy Silhouette, is a generalization to the fuzzy case of the Average Silhouette Width Criterion, originally conceived to assess crisp (non-fuzzy) data partitions. The Fuzzy Silhouette is more appealing than its crisp counterpart in the context of fuzzy cluster analysis since it makes explicit use of the fuzzy partition matrix provided by the clustering algorithm. In addition, it has been designed to improve the performance of the original silhouette criterion in detecting regions with higher data density when the data set involves overlapping clusters. The performance of the Fuzzy Silhouette is evaluated and compared to that of four well-known cluster validity measures. Four synthetic data sets are used to illustrate different scenarios in which the proposed Fuzzy Silhouette performs similar to or better than these other criteria, thus becoming eligible to join a pool of measures to be used altogether in fuzzy cluster analysis.

Effectively teaching introductory media signal processing (MSP) to students requires a means of communicating complex concepts without advanced mathematics. At the Media Arts and Technology program at UCSB we are teaching graduate media arts students concepts of MSP. These students, while interested in learning how their digital tools work, have an incredibly tough time working through the material the way traditional engineering students do. To address this we have used MATLAB to build a comprehensive suite of exploratory demonstrations and applications tailored to illustrate sophisticated concepts, and to inspire students that may not possess a strong background in mathematics. Our application, "Signals and Systems Using MATLAB" (SSUM), is presented here, and its use in a course designed to teach MSP to media arts students is discussed. Its usefulness extends beyond media arts to engineering and computer science curriculum. SSUM can be obtained for free from http://***/***. © 2005 IEEE.

One-on-one educational computing refers to I student I computing device, which means every student in a group uses a digital learning device. In this paper, we present a model of student question generation called AGQ, which stands for "asking a good question," supported by one-on-one educational computing in the classroom settings. AGQ is designed for engaging students in a challenging learning activity that potentially involves higher-level cognitive processing operations. We shall describe the general design of AGQ, called Product Evolution, and that the current version is a variation of it.

The multimodal and time-varying aspects of blind equalization problems in communication systems are treated here by means of an immune-inspired strategy capable of estimating the coefficients of the FIR equalization filter in an unsupervised manner. The associated optimization problem is solved by means of a population-based search technique characterized by a dynamic control of the population size and diversity maintenance. Static and time-varying channels have been proposed in simulated scenarios, aiming at indicating the tracking capability derived from the adaptive adjustment of the coefficients of the blind equalizer. © 2005 IEEE.

The Collaborative Large-scale Engineering Analysis Network for Environmental Research (CLEANER) Project Office has been established with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a coalition of 11 other institutions. The project office is coordinating the creation of a strategic plan consisting of research, cyberinfrastructure, and education plans that set forth a roadmap for the collaborative engineering analysis network for the study of environmental problems. This report will be completed by July 2007 and requires input from K-12 educators, administrators and other stakeholders in K-12 education. This paper describes the CLEANER project, provides an example of the CLEANER Education Committee's vision for the K-12 area and lists contacts for further information. The intention of this paper is to elicit input from the K-12 engineering education community, including K-12 educators, on how the CLEANER Education Plan could better meet the future needs of K-12 students and educators © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.

Processing requirement of a complex autonomous robotic vehicle demands high efficiency in algorithmic and software execution. Today's advanced computer hardware technology provides processing capabilities that were not available a decade ago. There are still major space and time limitations on these technologies for autonomous robotic applications. Increasingly, small to miniature mobile robots are required for reconnaissance, surveillance, and hazardous material detections for military and industrial applications. The small sized autonomous mobile robotic applications have limited power capacity as well as memory and processing resources. A number of algorithms exist for producing optimal traverses given changing arc costs. One algorithm stands out as the most used algorithm in simple path finding applications such as games, named the A* algorithm. This paper investigated the hypothesis that cognitive based adaptive path planning algorithms are efficient. This assumption is based on the observed capability of biological systems, which ignore irrelevant information and quickly process non-optimum but efficient paths. Path planning function for all organisms from insects to humans is a critical function of survival, and living organisms perform it with graceful accuracy and efficiency. This hypothesis was tested by developing a Cognitive Based Adaptive Path Planning Algorithm (CBAPPA) and a limited simulation program to test the theory of the algorithm, and comparing the result with other known approaches. This paper presents a new cognitive based approach in solving the path planning problems for autonomous robotic applications. This paper illustrated that the CBAPPA's path-finding efficiency exceeds the efficiency of some popular analytical and heuristic approaches. This research paper concluded that the hypothesis was verified and cognitive based path planning algorithm is efficient and is a viable approach for autonomous robotic applications. © 2005 IEEE.
