Extraction of electromagnetic energy by an antenna from impinging external radiation is at the basis of wireless communications and wireless power transfer (WPT). The maximum of transferred energy is ensured when the antenna is conjugately matched, i.e., when it is resonant and it has an equal coupling with free space and its load. This condition, however, can be easily affected by changes in the environment, preventing optimal operation of a WPT system. Here, we introduce the concept of coherently enhanced WPT that allows us to bypass this difficulty and achieve dynamic control of power transfer. The approach relies on coherent excitation of the waveguide connected to the antenna load with a backward propagating signal of specific amplitude and phase. This signal creates a suitable interference pattern at the load resulting in a modification of the local wave impedance, which in turn enables conjugate matching and a largely increased amount of extracted energy. We develop a simple theoretical model describing this concept, demonstrate it with full-wave numerical simulations for the canonical example of a dipole antenna, and verify experimentally in both near-field and far-field regimes.

The inference of gene regulatory networks (GRNs) from expression profiles is still an important challenge in bioinformatics research. The main difficulty of this problem is associated to the huge number of genes and the small number of samples available, as well as the intrinsic noise in the data acquisition process. In this context, this paper presents a feature selection approach to the identification of GRNs using optimisation strategies from evolutionary computation and swarm intelligence. As a case-study we used an artificial gene network (AGN) based on the scale-free topology. This AGN has 1,000 genes and was simulated with 500 temporal expression samples. The methods compared were: differential evolution (DE), bat algorithm (BAT) and artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithms. All algorithms used their standard control parameters and the same criterion function: the mean conditional entropy (MCE). This is an information theory measure, commonly adopted for various feature selection problems in the pattern recognition research field. The results showed that DE algorithm leaded to the best results than BAT and ABC in all comparisons, and the inferred network was more similar to the original network. Kramers degeneracy is one fundamental embodiment of the quantum mechanical nature of particles with half-integer spin under time reversal symmetry. Under the chiral and noncentrosymmetric achiral crystalline symmetries, Kramers degeneracy emerges respectively as topological quasiparticles of Weyl fermions and Kramers nodal lines (KNLs), anchoring the Berry phase-related physics of electrons. However, an experimental demonstration for ideal KNLs well isolated at the Fermi level is lacking. Here, we establish a class of noncentrosymmetric achiral intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide superconductors with large Ising-type spin-orbit coupling, represented by InxTaS2, to host an ideal KNL phase. We provide evidence from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with spin resolution, angle-dependent quantum oscillation measurements, and ab-initio calculations. Our work not only provides a realistic platform for realizing and tuning KNLs in layered materials, but also paves the way for exploring the interplay between KNLs and superconductivity, as well as applications pertaining to spintronics, valleytronics, and nonlinear transport. © The Author(s) 2025.

Impedance spectroscopy is often applied to characterize solids and fluids since each substance presents its own and sometimes unique impedance spectra. In industrial applications, impedance spectroscopy has the potential to monitor many processes such as those occurring in chemical reactors or liquid transportation in pipelines. In this paper, we introduce a sensor being able to perform measurements of impedance spectra (from few Hz to few MHz) allied to precise temperature measurements based on optical fiber Bragg grating sensors which was applied for monitoring ice formation, as exemplary process. The new sensor is described, calibrated and tested. The system was evaluated by measurements with known substances. Ice formation process was monitored and some findings are presented and discussed.

The dispatching of labor and distribution of tasks among workers are important aspects of corporate operations. Labor dispatch refers to the dispatching of employees to meet with clients;however, dispatches commonly vary with time. This means that any analysis pertaining to labor dispatch and work distribution should also vary with time. In this study, MATLAB was used to analyze data from anonymous caseworkers in central Taiwan in order to identify relationships between the location of their offices and the homes of their clients. Our aim was to determine the rationality behind labor dispatch and work distribution. This led us to develop a novel method by which to dispatch labor in order to achieve a more equitable distribution of work. Simulations demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme in improving labor dispatch and work distribution. © 2017 IEEE.

Cryptography is the science and art of maintaining the security of messages when messages are sent from one place to another. One of the ways securing the form of text message information is by the encryption process using the Vigenere Cipher algorithm and utilizing the One Time Pad (OTP) algorithm as a key generator, where the message will be random when it is opened. The message encryption process used the vigenere cipher algorithm while OTP is used to secure the key with the same formula. After this research has been done, an application was designed to secure text messages by converting the text message into a random message so that the message was unreadable due to a secret message that could not be known by others. The results achieved can secure an encrypted message that cannot be reopened and if those messages were reopened, they must be decrypted.

N-Acyl lipids are important mediators of several biological processes including immune function and stress response. To enhance the detection of N-acyl lipids with untargeted mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, we created a reference spectral library retrieving N-acyl lipid patterns from 2,700 public datasets, identifying 851 N-acyl lipids that were detected 356,542 times. 777 are not documented in lipid structural databases, with 18% of these derived from short-chain fatty acids and found in the digestive tract and other organs. Their levels varied with diet and microbial colonization and in people living with diabetes. We used the library to link microbial N-acyl lipids, including histamine and polyamine conjugates, to HIV status and cognitive impairment. This resource will enhance the annotation of these compounds in future studies to further the understanding of their roles in health and disease and to highlight the value of large-scale untargeted metabolomics data for metabolite discovery.

This work proposes an efficient approach to recover the mechanical strain profile applied on fibre Bragg grating sensors. The proposed method is based on differential evolution and uses only the sensor reflectivity, without requiring phase information. The method has been shown to be highly parallelisable, with the fitness evaluation procedure implemented on graphical processing units. Experiments were performed to evaluate the performance of the method on three distinct graphic processing units (GPU), under a series of increasing loads. An enhancement up to three orders of magnitude in performance was obtained in respect to other evolutionary method proposed in the literature for the same purpose. Furthermore, it was observed that, for smaller problem sizes, the GPU clock rate was more significant than the number of cores of the GPU. © 2016 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
