We present a new numerical and inherently parallel algorithm for solving banded (strictly) diagonally dominant triangular and banded Toeplitz (BDDTT) systems of linear equations. A Taylor polynomial, derived from the matrix analog of the Taylor Series for evaluating (1-x) ~(-1)where |χ| < 1, is applied, in conjunction with other techniques, to compute an approximate solution to a BDDTT-type system. This method requires O(n log_2n) arithmetic operations (ops) and O(log_2n) parallel steps (steps). Two FFTs and an IFFT of order 2n are the main contributors to the workload. This matches the FFT count for a triangular Toeplitz-matrix-vector multiplication. Clearly then, our method improves on the many algebraic FFT based processes that first determine the triangular Toeplitz matrix that is the inverse of a BDDTT matrix in order to then solve the associated BDDTT system.

Autonomous robots and humans need to create a coherent 3D representation of their peripersonal space in order to interact with nearby objects. Recent studies in visual neuroscience suggest that the small coordinated head/eye movements that humans continually perform during fixation provides useful depth information. In this work, we mimic such a behavior on a humanoid robot and propose a computational model that extracts depth information without requiring the kinematic model of the robot. First, we show that, during fixational head/eye movements, proprioceptive cues and optic flow lie on a low dimensional subspace that is a function of the depth of the target. Then, we use the generative adaptive subspace self-organizing map (GASSOM) to learn these depth-dependent subspaces. The depth of the target is eventually decoded using a winner-take-all strategy. The proposed model is validated on a simulated model of the iCub robot.

Recently, a modified data hiding scheme based on pixel value differencing and improving exploiting modification directions is proposed by Shen and Huang. There are two major contributions in this scheme. One is to enhance the embedding rate and good embedding capacity and the other is an optimization problem used to solve the overflow/ underflow problem. In fact, they propose the similar brute force method to solve overflow/underflow problem in their proposed scheme. To overcome the overflow/underflow problem exactly, we will propose the close form to solve this problem in this paper. Then, an improvement data hiding scheme based on FFEMD (Formula Fully Exploiting Modification Directions) and pixel value differencing method is proposed. According to our analysis, it is not only to keep the advantages of Shen-Huang scheme but also to use the close form to solve the overflow/ underflow problem.

Dilute nitride GaNP is potentially useful as the top junction in dual-junction solar cells on Si because it has a tunable direct-bandgap and small lattice mismatch with Si. Investigations on GaP are the first step toward this goal. Our best GaNP solar cell on GaP ([N] = 1.8%, Eg = 2.05 eV) achieves an efficiency of 7.9%, which is 3 times higher than the most efficient GaP solar cell to date and higher than other solar cells with similar direct bandgap (InGaP, GaAsP). We also report GaP/GaNP core/shell microwire solar cells utilizing top-down reactiveion etching to create the GaP cores and molecular beam epitaxy to create the GaNP shells. Systematic studies of cell performance over a series of microwire lengths, array periods, and sidewall morphologies, examined by transmission electron microscopy, were conducted to shed light on performance-limiting factors and to optimize the cell efficiency.

The standard treatment of quantum corrections to semiclassical electronic conduction assumes that charge carriers propagate many wavelengths between scattering events, and succeeds in explaining multiple phenomena (weak localization magnetoresistance (WLMR), universal conductance fluctuations, Aharonov-Bohm oscillations) observed in polycrystalline metals and doped semiconductors in various dimensionalities. We report apparent WLMR and conductance fluctuations in HxVO2, a poor metal (in violation of the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit) stabilized by the suppression of the VO2 metal-insulator transition through atomic hydrogen doping. Epitaxial thin films, single-crystal nanobeams, and nanosheets show similar phenomenology, though the details of the apparent WLMR seem to depend on the combined effects of the strain environment and presumed doping level. Self-consistent quantitative analysis of the WLMR is challenging given this and the high resistivity of the material, since the quantitative expressions for WLMR are derived assuming good metallicity. These observations raise the issue of how to assess and analyze mesoscopic quantum effects in poor metals. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Humans sense of touch consists in a complexity of sensors and nervous system. The information inferred by this system enables the daily dexterous manipulation tasks. In biological systems, there is no conscious prioritization of sensors while performing tactile exploration and the selection of exploratory movements is driven by learning instincts and data gathered by previous movements. The development of artificial systems tries to mimic such systems with engineered sensors and strategies for movement selection. This paper presents a data-driven analysis to the problem of sensor selection in the contour following for shape discrimination task. This task consists of a 4-DOF robotic finger exploring a set of 7 synthetic shapes. The data collected from the motors, inertial measurement unit, and magnetometer was analyzed applying principal component analysis and a multilayer perceptron neural network. Results show the variation of classification rate depending on the fingertip material and sensor considered. It is worth to observe that the magnetometer was the most robust in both cases. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper deals with the estimation of intrinsic and extrinsic parameters in a fundus camera system. These parameters are fundamental to retrieve three-dimensional reconstruction of eye's structure, in our case, retinal blood vessels. In this paper we used the Zhang's algorithm to estimate the intrinsic parameters of the optical system. Besides, an alternative method to estimate the extrinsic parameters is proposed based on the kinect one sensor. These modifications provide an easy way to characterise the whole fundus camera system. Experimental validation was carried out to verify the accuracy of the proposed method. A cylindrical known object was reconstructed having and average error of 3.96%. A real eye's structure was also reconstructed from a fundus image pair. © 2016 IEEE.

In recent years, with the spread of applications such as electronic musical scores has been developed. However, existing electronic musical score applications were developed considering individual use (principally by pianists), and when using electronic musical score systems for a wind orchestra, for example, the load placed on the musical performers are effectively the same as when using paper scores. Therefore, in this study we were taking advantage of the characteristics of the tablet terminal, was carried out a proposal and trial production of the electronic musical score system PEANUTS for wind orchestra. Music of the data to be used in the PEANUTS is presupposed to reuse the score of paper that is currently being used. In PEANUTS, was focused on page turn as a load applied to the performer when playing musical piece in wind orchestra, we have proposed system of designating the person in charge of page turn to reduce the load based on algorithm of designating the person in charge of page turn for single music. However, the concert of wind orchestra usually play multiple music. In this paper, we were carried out the evaluation experiment considering the concert program. We were consider to resolve bias of the load value on the part of the performers by considering the concert program.

In August 2015 the cryptographic world was shaken by a sudden and surprising announcement by the US National Security Agency (NSA) concerning plans to transition to post-quantum algorithms. Since this announcement post-quantum cryptography has become a topic of primary interest for several standardization bodies. The transition from the currently deployed public-key algorithms to post-quantum algorithms has been found to be challenging in many aspects. In particular the problem of evaluating the quantum-bit security of such post-quantum cryptosystems remains vastly open. Of course this question is of primarily concern in the process of standardizing the post-quantum cryptosystems. In this paper we consider the quantum security of the problem of solving a system of m Boolean multivariate quadratic equations in n variables (MQ2);a central problem in postquantum cryptography. When n = m, under a natural algebraic assumption, we present a Las-Vegas quantum algorithm solving MQ2that requires the evaluation of, on average, O(20.462n) quantum gates.
