This article presents a method to assess whether folksonomies are useful shared conceptualizations for conceptual modeling. A method based on the tripartite model (actors, concepts and instances) induces from social applications a folksonomy related to a domain of knowledge. The hypothesis of this paper is that if folksonomies are shared conceptualizations, then using them in conceptual modeling should reduce the number of divergences between actors when they elicit terms to be part of a model (a concept map in this article). A controlled experiment of conceptual modeling was performed with experimental groups who received tags inducted from data of categorizations from Delicious and control groups who received terms extracted from Web pages categorized on Delicious. The results show that the experimental groups obtained less divergences (on average) in elicitation of terms when compared to control groups.

The synthesis reaction used in esterification needs high energy consumption and a precise processing time to get the best yield of target. In this study, a model was formulated to optimize glycerol esterification process by minimizing the time needed for the process and maximizing the yield of Mono-glycerides. This optimization has gained importance for boosting the esterification industry and improving the production efficiency. Optimization through adaptive monitoring and control has provided significant advances in the process efficiency, a lower energy consumption and a better product quality. This paper presents the optimization with a computational algorithm in real time and adaptive control (RTAC), as compared to the conventional (traditional) methods to monitor and control of glycerol esterification processes. The identification of esterification status based on temperature and time are evaluated to strengthen the optimization. An adaptive method as feature selection to select wavelength IR sensors at specified intervals was carried out with Relief algorithm and Adaptive Pillar K-means clustering method to set the parameter control was proposed in this paper. Many combinations were evaluated from real time condition process, to achieve the best optimization results. The experimental results demonstrate that real time adaptive control can be achieved by using three clusters, which are heating up, stabilizing and finishing. In RTAC, each cluster has its own parameter to set the control point by the servo motor that was attached to magnetic stirrer-heater. By using optimization parameter for each cluster, esterification process time can be shortened by 15-20 minutes with a higher yield (7% or more), lower range stirrer rotation (300rpm-450 rpm) and a lower final temperature of 200℃ - 210℃.

Two multiplierless pruned 8-point discrete cosine transform (DCT) approximation are presented. Both transforms present lower arithmetic complexity than state-of-the-art methods. The performance of such new methods was assessed in the image compression context. A JPEG-like simulation was performed, demonstrating the adequateness and competitiveness of the introduced methods. Digital VLSI implementation in CMOS technology was also considered. Both presented methods were realized in Berkeley Emulation Engine (BEE3). © 2015 IEEE.

Purpose: Previously we reported the development of anthropomorphic tissue-equivalent scatter phantoms of the human breast. Here we present the first results from the scatter imaging of the tissue equivalent breast phantoms for breast cancer diagnosis. Methods: A breast phantom was designed to assess the capability of coded aperture coherent x-ray scatter imaging to classify different types of breast tissue (adipose, fibroglandular, tumor). The phantom geometry was obtained from a prone breast geometry scanned on a dedicated breast CT system. The phantom was 3D printed using the segmented DICOM breast CT data. The 3D breast phantom was filled with lard (as a surrogate for adipose tissue) and scanned in different geometries alongside excised human breast tissues (obtained from lumpectomy and mastectomy procedures). The raw data were reconstructed using a model-based reconstruction algorithm and yielded the location and form factor (i.e., momentum transfer (q) spectrum) of the materials that were imaged. The measured material form factors were then compared to the ground truth measurements acquired by x-ray diffraction (XRD) imaging. Results: Our scatter imaging system was able to define the location and composition of the various materials and tissues within the phantom. Cancerous breast tissue was detected and classified through automated spectral matching and an 86% correlation threshold. The total scan time for the sample was approximately 10 minutes and approaches workflow times for clinical use in intra-operative or other diagnostic tasks. Conclusion: This work demonstrates the first results from an anthropomorphic tissue equivalent scatter phantom to characterize a coherent scatter imaging system. The functionality of the system shows promise in applications such as intra-operative margin detection or virtual biopsy in the diagnosis of breast cancer. Dysregulated mechanisms underlying Duchenne muscular dystrophy from co-expression network preservation analysis

Background: Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked recessive disorder with its primary insult on the skeletal muscle. Severe muscle wasting, chronic inflammation and fibrosis characterize dystrophic muscle. Here we identify dysregulated pathways in DMD utilizing a co-expression network approach as described in Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA). Specifically, we utilize WGCNA's "preservation" statistics to identify gene modules that exhibit a weak conservation of network topology within healthy and dystrophic networks. Preservation statistics rank modules based on their topological metrics such as node density, connectivity and separability between networks. Methods: Raw data for DMD was downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus (GSE6011) and suitably preprocessed. Co-expression networks for each condition (healthy and dystrophic) were generated using the WGCNA library in R. Preservation of healthy network edges was evaluated with respect to dystrophic muscle and vice versa using WGCNA. Highly exclusive gene pairs for each of the low preserved modules within both networks were also determined using a specificity measure. Results: A total of 11 and 10 co-expressed modules were identified in the networks generated from 13 healthy and 23 dystrophic samples respectively. 5 out of the 11, and 4 out of the 10 modules were identified as exhibiting none-to-weak preservation. Functional enrichment analysis identified that these weakly preserved modules were highly relevant to the condition under study. For instance, weakly preserved dystrophic module D2 exhibited the highest fraction of genes exclusive to DMD. The highly specific gene pairs identified within these modules were enriched for genes activated in response to wounding and affect the extracellular matrix including several markers such as SPP1, MMP9 and ITGB2. Colorimetry based point-of-care diagnostics provide an inexpensive technique for healthcare and environmental monitoring during disaster relief operations. Conventional equipments for measuring colorimetric assays are bulky and expensive, making them unsuitable for usage in low-resource settings. This paper proposes a novel approach for taking colorimetric measurements using a miniaturized spectrophotometer prototype attached to a smartphone. The proposed frugal design is portable, easy-to-use and costs less than US$15. High dynamic range imaging is used to process the spectrums captured by smartphone camera. The proposed algorithm supports JPEG image format, allowing the prototype to be used with a wide variety of smartphone models. In the experimental study, spectrums of color dye and milk samples are imaged. Spectrums obtained are found to be well correlated with the sample color and concentration. By providing accurate and fast measurements, smartphone spectrophotometry enables effective application of colorimetric diagnostic techniques in low-resource settings.

Heterostructures like InAs/GaSb superlattices (SLs) are distinctly different from well-studied ones like GaAs/AlAs SLs in terms of band alignment, common interface atom, and phonon spectrum overlapping of the constituents, which manifests as stark differences in their electronic and vibrational properties. This paper reports a comprehensive examination of all four types of phonon modes (confined, quasiconfined, extended, and interface) that have long been predicted for the InAs/GaSb SL, with the observation and interpretation of a set of phonon modes by performing cleaved edge μ-Raman study with polarization analysis. Furthermore, we show a signature of symmetry reduction from D2d for GaAs/AlAs SL to C2v for InAs/GaSb SL revealed as a phonon-polariton effect.

In this paper, a new kind of swarm-based metaheuristic search method, called Elephant Herding Optimization (EHO), is proposed for solving optimization tasks. The EHO method is inspired by the herding behavior of elephant group. In nature, the elephants belonging to different clans live together under the leadership of a matriarch, and the male elephants will leave their family group when they grow up. These two behaviors can be modelled into two following operators: clan updating operator and separating operator. In EHO, the elephants in each clan are updated by its current position and matriarch through clan updating operator. It is followed by the implementation of the separating operator which can enhance the population diversity at the later search phase. To demonstrate its effectiveness, EHO is benchmarked by fifteen test cases comparing with BBO, DE and GA. The results show that EHO can find the better values on most benchmark problems than those three metaheuristic algorithms.

We aim at dimensioning fixed broadband microwave wireless networks under unreliable channel conditions. As the transport capacity of microwave links is prone to variations due to, e.g., weather conditions, such a dimensioning requires special attention. It can be formulated as the determination of the minimum cost bandwidth assignment of the links in the network for which traffic requirements can be met with high probability, while taking into account that transport link capacities vary depending on channel conditions. The proposed optimization model represents a major step forward since we consider dynamic routing. Experimental results show that the resulting solutions can save up to 45% of the bandwidth cost compared to the case where a bandwidth over-provisioning policy is uniformly applied to all links in the network planning. Comparisons with previous work also show that we can solve much larger instances in significantly shorter computing times, with a comparable level of reliability.

Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years.
