It is an urgent need to find an objective way to estimate the degree of fatigue of employees. In this study, we designed a monitoring and estimation system for the degree of fatigue. This paper explains a long-term pedaling experiment that we use it to explore the possibility to use only the time sequence data of head movement during pedaling to estimate the fatigue. While we show the possibility for this through experimental data, it is clear that we need to collect more data to establish an estimation method.

This paper presents a shunt active power filter (SAPF) topology, based on the concept of a transformer with open-end winding (OEW), for reactive power and harmonic compensations employed in three-phase four wire (3P4W) systems under balanced and unbalanced conditions. The proposed system uses two independent dc-links and two independent converters series connected through transformers. Complete system control, including PWM technique, is developed and a comparison between the proposed SAPF and conventional one is presented as well. Simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the theoretical approach.

A tale of two worlds: The painting used for the frontispiece is F. Rasma’s “Mehr Licht” from 1991. We are grateful to the artist for his permission to reproduce it here. “Mehr Licht!” (more light!) can be understood as the very human outcry for more insight, more understanding, more knowledge. It is said to be Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s last words, one of the greatest German thinkers, scientists and poets. In the context of quantum crystallography, the artwork and its title represent the possibilities of this new science to generate more and deeper knowledge by using intense light in terms of radiation and by amalgamation of two mature disciplines - quantum mechanics and crystallography on page 10881 ff.

This paper proposes three dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) topologies. Such configurations are able to compensate voltage sags/swells in three-phase four-wire (3P4W) systems under balanced and unbalanced conditions. The proposed systems in this work use two independent dc-links. The complete control system, including the PWM technique, is developed and comparisons between the proposed configurations and a conventional one are performed. Simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the theoretical approach.

This paper presents the effect of sponge on the earphone and position of earbud-type earphone in concha on sound pressure level (SPL) and total harmonic distortion (THD). Head and torso simulator (HATS) with silicon pinna, which resembles an exact acoustic field around human subject is employed to replace human head. Based on anatomy of human ear, and earphone usage, three different earphone's positions in the concha are identified. To measure SPL and THD, electroacoustic equipments are employed in an anechoic chamber. The earphone with sponge enhances the SPL and lowers THD. The position of earphone in concha affects SPL and THD more prominently at low frequency below earphone's resonant frequency. For common user, it is recommended to place earphone in concha directly against its surface and supported along circumference by tragus, anti-tragus and crus helias while the tragus slightly covers the earphone. Additionally, its wire should be located along the tragal notch.

The necessity to efficiently balance and re-allocate system resources among hospitals in a hospital network is paramount, especially as health systems experience increasing demand and costs for health services. In this paper, we proffer a resource allocation-based optimization model that adjusts resources (system inputs) automatically, which provides decision makers (such as health care managers and policy-makers) with a decision-support tool for re-allocating resources in large health systems that are centrally controlled and funded, such as the Military Health System. In these systems, inputs are fixed at certain levels and may only be adjusted within medical treatment facilities, while outputs must be maintained. We provide a mathematical formulation and example solutions from a case study using real-world data from sixteen U.S. Army hospitals. We also find utility in the use of multi-start evolutionary algorithms to store multiple optimal solutions for consideration by decision makers. © 2014 "IIE".

Recently, a method for estimating permittivity distributions was reported. The method combined a numerical technique (Finite Element Method) with Genetic Algorithm (GA). However, methods for estimating the distribution of permittivity have not yet been established. The purpose of this study is to obtain experimental data in order to improve the estimation method. We measured capacitance and electrical potential of plural points when an acrylic rod is placed in various positions within a measurement system. © 2013 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

The TODIM (an acronym in Portuguese for Interative Multi-criteria Decision Making) method has recently been extended firstly to fuzzy and next to intuitionistic fuzzy environments with promising results. In this paper, we further consider the extension of TODIM to interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy (IVIF) environments. Two case studies are used to illustrate the approach to multi-criteria decision making. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the presented method.

This paper presents a new multi-scale place recognition system inspired by the recent discovery of overlapping, multi-scale spatial maps stored in the rodent brain. By training a set of Support Vector Machines to recognize places at varying levels of spatial specificity, we are able to validate spatially specific place recognition hypotheses against broader place recognition hypotheses without sacrificing localization accuracy. We evaluate the system in a range of experiments using cameras mounted on a motorbike and a human in two different environments. At 100% precision, the multiscale approach results in a 56% average improvement in recall rate across both datasets. We analyse the results and then discuss future work that may lead to improvements in both robotic mapping and our understanding of sensory processing and encoding in the mammalian brain.

We have developed an MR compatible PET insert prototype to enable simultaneous PET-MR imaging of small animals inside a 7T animal MR imaging system. The 16 detectors in this system are based on the SensL SPMArray4B silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) and dual layer offset LYSO crystal blocks with crystal size of 1.2 × 1.2 × 4 mm~3 in the top layer and 1.2 × 1.2 × 6 mm~3 in the bottom layer, with 409 total crystals per detector. Each detector was evaluated by generating flood histogram images and measuring per-crystal photopeak amplitude and energy resolution. The system was tested for MR compatibility and no visible artefacts were seen in the MR images or in the PET detector flood images. The temperature of the detector modules was monitored and found to stabilize after approximately two hours of operation between 32℃ and 34℃. Photopeak amplitude, energy resolution and count rates recorded per crystal were studied at a baseline temperature of 30℃ and at temperatures ranging from 20℃ to 40℃ in increments of 2℃. When bias voltage to the detectors was fixed at the value corresponding to an overvoltage of 2.5V at 30℃, the photopeak amplitude changed by as much as 19% and 28% at 20℃ and 40℃ respectively. Energy resolution and count rates demonstrated similar degrees of change. Maintaining a fixed overvoltage at each temperature point reduced but did not completely eliminate the change in these output characteristics. A lookup table based on empirical measurements was employed for the adjustment of bias voltage at different temperatures to maximize the stability of detector modules. Measurements obtained by using this lookup table method demonstrate better stability when compared to results obtained by using a fixed overvoltage.
