This paper presents a prototype of an acquisition board of electromyographic signals (EMG);an embedded portable, wireless and low cost solution. The system is composed of an EMG acquisition board, Zigbee modules and a device named GPRSx. After acquiring the EMG signal, it is sent through ZigBee wireless technology to GPRSx device. The GPRSx device sends the EMG signal to a server on the Internet by using GPRS wireless technology. Thus, the EMG signal is displayed in a graph on a remote computer. The results are very promising and may serve as a reference in studies for the biomedical area.

This paper describes an experiment of integrating undergraduate and graduate courses at the Brazilian Aeronautics Institute of Technology, within the computer engineering Undergraduate program and the Electronic and Computing engineering graduate program, during the 2nd semester of 2011. A Smart Grids System case study was used as a Problem Based Learning strategy together with agile best practices within a project development. This experiment has involved four courses: Embedded Systems (undergraduate), Embedded and Real-Time Systems, Software Quality, Reliability, and Safety, and Advanced Topics in Software Testing. During this experiment, the students of all these courses had to interact and collaborate in order to produce a prototype of a Smart Grids System, simulating a real project development.

Context: The technical debt (TD) concept describes a tradeoff between short-term and long-term goals in software development. While it is highly useful as a metaphor, it has utility beyond the facilitation of discussion, to inspire a useful set of methods and tools that support the identification, measurement, monitoring, management, and payment of TD. Objective: This study focuses on the identification of TD. We evaluate human elicitation of TD and compare it to automated identification. Method: We asked a development team to identify TD items in artifacts from a software project on which they were working. We provided the participants with a TD template and a short questionnaire. In addition, we also collected the output of three tools to automatically identify TD and compared it to the results of human elicitation. Results: There is little overlap between the TD reported by different developers, so aggregation, rather than consensus, is an appropriate way to combine TD reported by multiple developers. The tools used are especially useful for identifying defect debt but cannot help in identifying many other types of debt, so involving humans in the identification process is necessary. Conclusion: We have conducted a case study that focuses on the practical identification of TD, one area that could be facilitated by tools and techniques. It contributes to the TD landscape, which depicts an understanding of relationships between different types of debt and how they are best discovered. Copyright 2013 ACM.

The amount of data generated in different knowledge areas has made it necessary the use of data mining tools capable of automatically analyzing and extracting knowledge from datasets. Clustering is one of the most important tasks in data mining and can be defined as the process of partitioning objects into groups or clusters, such that objects in the same group are more similar to one another than to objects belonging to other groups. In this context, this paper aims to propose an adaptation of a bee-inspired optimization algorithm so that it is able to solve data clustering problems. The algorithm was run for different datasets and the results obtained showed high quality clusters and diversity of solutions, whilst a suitable number of clusters was automatically determined. © 2013 IEEE.

The present study was undertaken to compare angularity, texture, and flat and elongated (F&E) particles of three different types (namely, granite, rhyolite, and limestone) of coarse aggregates. An aggregate-imaging system (AIMS) manufactured by Pine Instruments Inc., was used to measure the shape parameters of the aggregates. Comparison of shape parameters was performed by plotting the distribution of different types of angular particles (i.e., rounded, sub-rounded, sub-angular, and angular);texture particles (i.e., polished, smooth, low, medium, and high roughness);and F&E particles (maximum to minimum dimension ratio = 5:1 and 3:1). In addition, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to compare the mean of the shape parameters. Results show that no significant difference exists in angularity of different types of aggregates. However, texture was found to be significantly different for the three types of aggregates considered in this study. It was observed that the granite aggregates have the highest texture followed by the limestone and the rhyolite aggregates. The study indicates that aggregates can have same angularity but can differ significantly in texture. The distribution of F&E particles shows that three aggregates had less than 10% and 20% of particles with maximum to minimum dimension ratios 5:1 and 3:1, respectively. It is expected that present study will be helpful in understanding the shape parameters for different types of aggregates. © 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers.

We identified and organized a number of statements about technical debt (TD Folklore list) expressed by practitioners in online websites, blogs and published papers. We chose 14 statements and we evaluated them through two surveys (37 practitioners answered the questionnaires), ranking them by agreement and consensus. The statements most agreed with show that TD is an important factor in software project management and not simply another term for 'bad code'. This study will help the research community in identifying folklore that can be translated into research questions to be investigated, thus targeting attempts to provide a scientific basis for TD management. © 2013 IEEE.

Porous, nanostructured silver samples were produced using a direct-write method where a nanoparticle aerosol consisting of particles with a mean size of approximately 5 nm were accelerated to speeds of approximately 1000 m/sec and impacted onto a translating substrate [1]. The impacting particles have sufficient energy to stick to the substrate, allowing patterned thick films to be directly written from the aerosol without a mask. Unlike other low temperature processing routes for achieving patterned films, no organics are added that can interfere with post-deposition processing. Typical films are 5-100 μm thick, up to several centimeters long, and have an as-deposited relative densities as high as 70% of bulk Ag. Compression tests were carried out in steps at room temperature and at 150°C under constant displacement rates. Local strain and densification were measured by optical profilometry between each compression step. The results can be used as a starting point to better understand the mechanisms that govern plasticity, creep, and sintering in nanostructured, porous silver at low processing temperatures. © 2013 Materials Research Society.

The objective of this research is to present a neural network based optical vibration sensor using a quad-cell photo-detector array. The proposed system uses a He-Ne laser source whose Gaussian beam impinges on the photo-detector array. The optical power distribution from the photo-detectors is fed to vibration monitoring system which maps the power distribution to the x-y position of the laser beam center. The vibration monitoring system uses artificial neural networks for function approximation to yield the correct mapping and estimate the x-y positions of the laser beam center which are then used for vibration characterization. An experimental setup of the system is developed and then trained using neural networks. The results obtained show the effectiveness of neural networks to estimate the vibration frequency and magnitude of a vibrating system.

Genetic adaptation to external stimuli occurs through the combined action of mutation and selection. A central problem in genetics is to identify loci responsive to specific selective pressures. Over the last two decades, many tests have been proposed to identify genomic signatures of natural selection. However, the power of these tests changes unpredictably from one dataset to another, with no single dominant method. We build upon recent work that connects many of these tests in a common framework, by describing how positive selection strongly impacts the observed site frequency spectrum (SFS). Many of the proposed tests quantify the skew in SFS to predict selection. Here, we show that the skew depends on many parameters, including the selection coefficient, and time since selection. Moreover, for each of the different regimes of positive selection, informative features of the scaled SFS can be learned from simulated data and applied to population-scale variation data. Using support vector machines, we develop a test that is effective over all selection regimes. On simulated datasets, our test outperforms existing ones over the entire parameter space. We apply our test to variation data from Drosophila melanogaster populations adapted to hypoxia, and identify new loci that were missed by previous approaches, but strengthen the role of the Notch pathway in hypoxia tolerance. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
