A vast number of spatiotemporal datasets collected from a wide range of sources has motivated scientists to develop effective approaches to identify interesting patterns hidden in these datasets. In this respect, kernel density estimators, which belong to a class of non-parametric estimators in statistics, have been widely exploited in recent years. With this background, we have developed a novel kernel density estimator aiming to provide accurate analysis results. According to the evaluation with a real spatiotemporal dataset, which collected emergency medical service records in a county in the United States, the proposed kernel density estimator can approximate the probability density function significantly more accurately than a conventional kernel density estimator. Furthermore, we have exploited the proposed kernel density estimator to identify interesting patterns hidden in the real spatiotemporal dataset. © 2023 IEEE.

This study introduces the system submitted to the SemEval 2022 Task 11: MultiCoNER (Multilingual Complex Named Entity Recognition) by the UC3M-PUCPR team. We proposed an ensemble of transformer-based models for entity recognition in cross-domain texts. Our deep learning method benefits from the transformer architecture, which adopts the attention mechanism to handle the long-range dependencies of the input text. Also, the ensemble approach for named entity recognition (NER) improved the results over baselines based on individual models on two of the three tracks we participated in. The ensemble model for the code-mixed task achieves an overall performance of 76.36% F1-score, a 2.85 percentage point increase upon our individually best model for this task, XLM-RoBERTa-large (73.51%), outperforming the baseline provided for the shared task by 18.26 points. Our preliminary results suggest that contextualized language models ensembles can, even if modestly, improve the results in extracting information from unstructured data. © 2022 Association for Computational Linguistics.

This research delves into enhancing local area power stability by integrating battery energy storage systems (BESS) with photovoltaic (PV) systems to address and accelerate the damping of post-fault oscillations following short-circuit disturbances within power grids incorporating variable renewable energy sources. Focused on implementing a power oscillation damping (POD) mechanism within PV plants, this study aims to mitigate post-fault oscillations effectively within a specified timeframe. The proposed POD within the PV plant is strategically designed to augment the grid's resilience by supplying additional active and reactive power in response to system demands post-disturbance. The integration of a 25 MW BESS has demonstrated a significant enhancement in the system's recovery speed, reducing oscillation duration from 60 seconds to 45 seconds. Moreover, a configuration with double PV systems and a 50 MW BESS further reduced the oscillation duration to 42 seconds. Utilizing PSCAD software, this study presents an innovative approach to visualize the system's behavior post-short-circuit disturbances, confirming the efficacy of BESS integration in improving system stability and reliability. These results pave the way for further exploration of optimal BESS sizing and placement strategies to maximize grid resilience.

This study aims to identify the factors influencing knowledge transfer within companies transitioning from the internal combustion engine (ICE) industry to the electric vehicle (EV) industry through an extensive literature review. In addition to summarizing findings and proposing strategies for utilizing artificial intelligence in knowledge transfer, our framework reveals the relevance of three key knowledge transfer factors and three distinct forms of artificial intelligence, including machine learning, in facilitating knowledge transfer. These insights can prove invaluable to entrepreneurs operating within the internal combustion engine automotive sector, offering essential guidance for enhancing the knowledge transfer process and navigating the transition to the electric vehicle industry. Supplier evaluation has a crucial role in maintaining efficiency in the food industry supply chain. Machine learning approaches can be employed to formulate models aimed at analyzing and evaluating supplier performance. Previous research has successfully designed decision tree and neural network models for assessing suppliers in the food industry with accuracies of 84.2% and 92.8% separately. Recognizing the opportunity to improve the model's performance, this study aims to advancing the machine learning models accuracy for analyzing and evaluating suppliers in the food industry. Two main models are proposed to enhance model accuracy: ensemble methods and support vector machine. This research has successfully designed a supplier evaluation model and demonstrated that the ensemble method - gradient boosting model outperforms other ensemble methods and support vector machine which is achieved a accuracy of 93.6% on a cross-validation dataset. The development of a dashboard is required to implement the supplier evaluation model using machine learning, facilitating decision-makers in evaluating and controlling supplier performance.

Rocket launch centers are crucial in technological development across various fields, including meteorology, long-distance real-time communications, geoprocessing, and satellite operations. However, one of the challenges in tracking probing rockets is accurately identifying their position from the moment of launch until the initial seconds, due to ground noise that interferes with traditional radar location systems. In this study is proposed an innovative method to precisely determine the distance between the rocket and the ground telemetry station. We utilize onboard telemetry signals processed by the Acquisition and Processing Data Trajectory (APDtraj) system, developed by Delsis Aerospace for the Launch Center. This system enables the identification of the rocket's position both on the ground and during the early stages of flight, using telemetry data processed by APDtraj. This monitoring equipment alone calculated the distance between the Telemetry Station and the rocket just moments before launch lift-off with an error of only 16.844 meters from the actual position of origin. Based on our studies, we were able to measure the radial distance and location between the rocket and the telemetry station just four seconds after launch, even without reliable radar information, which is often disrupted by ground noise. This technological advancement not only enhances the efficiency of rocket launch operations but also expands overall tracking capabilities.

This study presents a deep learning framework optimizing 3D clothing models for VR, using a CNN to significantly reduce the triangle count of models from DeepFashion3D and CAP-UDF datasets. Achieving a balance between efficiency and detail, it cuts triangle count from over 160,000 to below 4,000, maintaining high DPI. The approach automates optimization, promising scalability and efficiency in VR fashion, setting a foundation for future 3D content development, enhancing virtual garment realism and interactivity.

This paper presents a novel algorithm for reachability analysis of nonlinear discrete-time systems. The proposed method combines constrained zonotopes (CZs) with polyhedral relaxations of factorable representations of nonlinear functions to propagate CZs through nonlinear functions, which is normally done using conservative linearization techniques. The new propagation method provides better approximations than those resulting from linearization procedures, leading to significant improvements in the computation of reachable sets in comparison to other CZ methods from the literature. Numerical examples highlight the advantages of the proposed algorithm. © 2024 IEEE.

As the dengue infection still impacts hundreds of millions of people globally, unprecedented efforts in dengue drug development have been more progressive in recent decades. Computational methods provide a fast, sustainable, and efficient screening of active compounds and newly created drug molecules, including those specifically targeting nonstructural proteins (NS) of dengue viruses. In this work, protein modeling for the NS proteins of DENV-2/16681 strain was performed using a template-based homology modeling for the NS3 protein and an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based prediction via AlphaFold for the NS4B protein. Moreover, the protein-protein interaction between the two structures was predicted using the HADDOCK server, which employs information about active and passive residues of the interaction interface to guide the docking process. After the modeling and its respective refinement process, the predicted structures of NS3 and NS4B improved their steric clashing scoring from MolProbity assessment. The refined models were then docked, and the resulting docking pose was analyzed to extract the interacting residues based on the polar contacts within the interface of the two proteins. Our result presents a preliminary study to create a dataset related to in silico molecular interactions of the NS3-NS4B interaction of different DENV types. It is helpful for building a computational pipeline for elucidating protein-ligand problems in dengue drug screenings. © 2024 The Authors.
