The rapid growth of the biomedical literature and genomic information presents a major challenge for determining the functional relationships among genes. In this study, we develop a Web-based bioinformatics software environment called FAUN or feature annotation using nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) to facilitate both the discovery and classification of functional relationships among genes. Both the computational complexity and parameterization of NMF for processing gene sets are discussed. We tested FAUN on three manually constructed gene document collections, and then used it to analyze several microarray-derived gene sets obtained from studies of the developing cerebellum in normal and mutant mice. FAUN provides utilities for collaborative knowledge discovery and identification of new gene relationships from text streams and repositories (e.g., MEDLINE). It is particularly useful for the validation and analysis of gene associations suggested by microarray experimentation.

The effectiveness of the visual feedback to improve ability with the sense and muscular strength of human in our bicycle system was quantitatively verified in our study. Experiments were performed to find the factors related to the training of equilibrium sense. The subjects consisted of young and the aged and the group of young people was compared against the group of the aged. We investigated three different training modes, non-visual feedback (NVF), visual feedback of the weight (VFW), and visual feedback of the center of pressure (VFC) and measured the riding time and speed, the weight shift, and the center of pressure (COP) for twenties and seventies. The results showed that the running capability of the young and the aged became much better after repeated training. In addition, it was found out that the ability to control postural balance and the capability of equilibrium sense were improved with the presentation of the visual feedback information. These results will be effective in the diagnosis of equilibrium sense and vestibular function with the aged.

Emerging 64 bitOSpsilas supply a huge amount of memory address space that is essential for new applications using very large data. It is expected that the memory in connected nodes can be used to store swapped pages efficiently, especially in a dedicated cluster which has a high-speed network such as 10 GbE and Infiniband. In this paper, we propose the distributed large memory system (DLM), which provides very large virtual memory by using remote memory distributed over the nodes in a cluster. The performance of DLM programs using remote memory is compared to ordinary programs using local memory. The results of STREAM, NPB and Himeno benchmarks show that the DLM achieves better performance than other remote paging schemes using a block swap device to access remote memory. In addition to performance, DLM offers the advantages of easy availability and high portability, because it is a user-level software without the need for special hardware. To obtain high performance, the DLM can tune its parameters independently from kernel swap parameters. We also found that DLMpsilas independence of kernel swapping provides more stable behavior.

Similar to a recent paper by Karczub [J. Acoust. Soc. Am., Vol. 119(6), 3553‐3557, 2006], this work utilizes a symbolic math solution to obtain analytical solutions for the dispersion relation in a thin circular cylindrical shell. Analyses on the propagating wave mode shapes are particularly emphasized. The analytical solutions provide a straightforward calculation for all four branches of the dispersion curves, and the cumbersome numerical root searching technique is avoided. The dispersion relations for the breathing and torsional modes (n=0 circular harmonic), which were neglected by Karczub, are included. Mode shapes that characterize the types of wave that are predominantly transversal, longitudinal, circumferential, or in any combination of the three are analyzed in considerable detail. Effects by thickness and Poisson ratio variations are considered and examined. The cutoff frequencies for the higher order propagating modes are compared among the various orders of circular harmonics, from n = 0 to 10. Finally, comparison among several shell theories in the dispersion relation prospective, which is directly related to their accuracy in predicting the vibratory resonant frequencies of a finite shell, is also included in the discussion.

In order to assist driver's vision, a real-time recognition system for traffic signs is proposed. After detecting sign candidates, biologically inspired opponent-color filters are used to extract symbol parts of signs. After normalizing the size of symbol, structural features are calculated to identify the sign. 5572 segmented images are used to design the algorithm. In a real-time system, the same sign in a sequence of frames is tracked, and a majority vote is used to integrate the recognition results. For test data, 93.8% recall rate and 99.3% precision rate could be attained. In-vehicle experiment also showed high recall and precision rates.
