Memory errors can cause crashes and data loss, which are unacceptable for various computing systems, mainly large servers. Memory controllers can mitigate these errors by employing an Error Correction Code (ECC) in the data write and read flows. This work proposes a fault-tolerant mechanism that acts as a memory controller's encoding and decoding manager. This mechanism adapts the ECC for each memory block based on the efficacies of the ECCs available in the controller and the error rate captured at runtime. Consequently, memory blocks with a high error rate can be recoded to a high efficacy ECC and vice versa. Experimental results show that our proposal achieves high error correction efficacy with high energy efficiency.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is a transformative technology using the passive beamforming capabilities to create the programmable wireless environments. However, the control overhead is a challenging issue. The system needs to deliver the high-precision reflection coefficients to the RIS controller, for adjusting the phase shifts of the numerous RIS elements. Therefore, we propose a Spirograph-based discrete beamdirection strategy, which selects a set of non-uniformly distributed beam directions based on the generic patterns generated by the Spirograph (SG). We evaluate the achievable data rate and the number of controlling bits of SG-based method. We compare the SG-based method, the ideal continuous phase-shift method, and the SISO method. Simulation results show that with the properly-selected discrete beam directions, the SG-based method can achieve a comparable data rate as the ideal method, while having a lower control overhead.

The adoption of multi-sensor hardware units to detect different types of emergencies in complex scenarios such as Industry 4.0 and Smart Cities is a recent development trend, which have demanded research efforts to optimize the way these units are assembled, configured, and deployed. However, although their expected advantages, usual multi-sensors emergency-oriented approaches may be constrained by the tight association between physical sensor devices and the emergency detection process. Therefore, this paper proposes an innovative approach to concurrently detect multiple emergencies exploiting the concept of soft-sensor modules, which are implemented on Emergency Detection Units (EDUs) as concurrent tasks along with a high-priority emergency alerting task. The soft-sensor concept defines physical sensors as ordinary input data streams, which will be processed according to the defined algorithms by each particular soft-sensor, allowing detection decisions to be performed on the edge. In order to support the practical exploitation of this concept, a formal specification based on Petri Nets is defined, modeling the concurrent operation of the tasks within an EDU. A proof of concept is also designed based on the affordable Raspberry Pi Pico microcontroller, demonstrating how the proposed approach would behave when two soft-sensors are implemented in a typical detection unit.

This paper presents a design to improve the robustness of visual SLAM(vSLAM). A processing step of feature-removal is added to the tracking thread of the conventional ORB-SLAM2 algorithm to improve the localization accuracy of a mobile robot in an environment with moving persons. Instance segmentation and motion tracking are intergrated to identify motion state of people in an image. ORB feature points belonging to moving persons are removed for further processing of the vSLAM pipeline. The advantage of this method is that the vSLAM can remove feature points of moving people, while retain those belonging to static people in the environment, which improves the accuracy of robot pose estimation. The improved ORB-SLAM2 algorithm has been implemented in a NVIDIA Xavier embedded system, which is integrated to a mobile robot. In practical robot navigation experiments, the average positioning error of the proposed method is within 4cm for 22.4m travel distance. Compared with conventional ORB-SLAM2, the average accuracy of our vSLAM method improves 97% in a dynamic environment with moving people.
