Summary: Named entity recognition (NER) is a fundamental part of extracting information from documents in biomedical applications. A notable advantage of NER is its consistency in extracting biomedical entities in a document context. Although existing document NER models show consistent predictions, they still do not meet our expectations. We investigated whether the adjectives and prepositions within an entity cause a low label consistency, which results in inconsistent predictions. In this paper, we present our method, ConNER, which enhances the label dependency of modifiers (e.g., adjectives and prepositions) to achieve higher label agreement. ConNER refines the draft labels of the modifiers to improve the output representations of biomedical entities. The effectiveness of our method is demonstrated on four popular biomedical NER datasets;in particular, its efficacy is proved on two datasets with 7.5–8.6% absolute improvements in the F1 score. We interpret that our ConNER method is effective on datasets that have intrinsically low label consistency. In the qualitative analysis, we demonstrate how our approach makes the NER model generate consistent predictions. © 2022, CC BY-SA.

In this research, we have been developed teaching materials for electromagnetics that demonstrate theories using real-world actual applications (capacitors, coils, piezoelectric elements, Wireless Power Transfer(WPT), WiFi, direct-current motor, etc.) presented as animations and video data via Web services. Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and JavaScript were used to create the Web services for teaching materials. Recently, the lack of academic ability of Japanese engineering course students has become a large social problem at Japanese higher education. In particular, in the field of electrical engineering education, the visualization and mathematical abilities of students have been declining remarkably. In addition, today's teaching materials for educational institutions in Japan tend to reply primarily on rote learning. However, we consider that rote learning is not the primary method for university education. We tested our new developed materials on students learning motivation of electromagnetics and evaluated their effectiveness with some questionnaires. It was clear that the new teaching method has effectiveness for increasing learning motivation of Electromagnetics. © 2020 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Recent advances in robust semi-supervised learning (SSL) typically filter out-of-distribution (OOD) information at the sample level. We argue that an overlooked problem of robust SSL is its corrupted information on semantic level, practically limiting the development of the field. In this paper, we take an initial step to explore and propose a unified framework termed OOD Semantic Pruning (OSP), which aims at pruning OOD semantics out from in-distribution (ID) features. Specifically, (i) we propose an aliasing OOD matching module to pair each ID sample with an OOD sample with semantic overlap. (ii) We design a soft orthogonality regularization, which first transforms each ID feature by suppressing its semantic component that is collinear with paired OOD sample. It then forces the predictions before and after soft orthogonality decomposition to be consistent. Being practically simple, our method shows a strong performance in OOD detection and ID classification on challenging benchmarks. In particular, OSP surpasses the previous state-of-the-art by 13.7% on accuracy for ID classification and 5.9% on AUROC for OOD detection on TinyImageNet dataset. SINR: Deconvolving Circular SAS Images Using Implicit Neural Representations

Circular synthetic aperture sonars (CSAS) capture multiple observations of a scene to reconstruct high-resolution images. We can characterize resolution by modeling CSAS imaging as the convolution between a scene's underlying point scattering distribution and a system-dependent point spread function (PSF). The PSF is a function of the system bandwidth and determines a fixed degree of blurring on reconstructed imagery. In theory, deconvolution overcomes bandwidth limitations by reversing the PSF-induced blur and recovering the scene's scattering distribution. However, deconvolution is an ill-posed inverse problem and sensitive to noise. We propose an optimization method that leverages an implicit neural representation (INR) to deconvolve CSAS images. We highlight the performance of our SAS INR pipeline, which we call SINR, by implementing and comparing to existing deconvolution methods. Additionally, prior SAS deconvolution methods assume a spatially-invariant PSF, which we demonstrate yields subpar performance in practice. We provide theory and methods to account for a spatially-varying CSAS PSF, and demonstrate that doing so enables SINR to achieve superior deconvolution performance on simulated and real acoustic SAS data. The debate surrounding entrepreneurship in the Amazon rainforest region highlights the importance of sustainable actions developed by local brands. However, limited attention has been given to entrepreneur's perspectives regarding the outcome of their applied practices. The objective of this study was to understand the entrepreneurs’ perception based on their business models concerning the connection to the Amazon brand and the aspects of sustainable use of its natural resources. The study was performed through semi-structured interviews with seven Amazonian product brands entrepreneurs utilizing Grounded Theory. The results demonstrate that entrepreneurs understand that reaching the social dimension relies on the articulation of three main factors: entrepreneurs, the native people, and the shared traditional knowledge and culture. It is observed that the political dimension is still underdeveloped in the region with limited application of its effects on products. Additionally, the economic dimension is not significantly favored by the utilization of environmentally sustainable brands. Lastly, the territorial dimension depends on the establishment of permanent protection areas, as well as agroforestry systems.

Discovering an aid policy to minimize student evasion using offline reinforcement learning

High dropout rates in tertiary education expose a lack of efficiency that causes frustration of expectations and financial waste. Predicting students at risk is not enough to avoid student dropout. Usually, an appropriate aid action must be discovered and applied in the proper time for each student. To tackle this sequential decision-making problem, we propose a decision support method to the selection of aid actions for students using offline reinforcement learning to support decision-makers effectively avoid student dropout. Additionally, a discretization of student's state space applying two different clustering methods is evaluated. Our experiments using logged data of real students shows, through off-policy evaluation, that the method should achieve roughly 1.0 to 1.5 times as much cumulative reward as the logged policy. So, it is feasible to help decision-makers apply appropriate aid actions and, possibly, reduce student dropout. © 2021, CC BY.

Autonomous cars have become an interesting discussion in recent years. Several major automotive industries such as Tesla, GM and Nissan are trying to become pioneers in autonomous car technology. Giant technology companies such as Google Waymo, Baidu and Aptiv also developing autonomous car technology. Several technological approaches are carried out in implementing autonomous cars for recognizing surrounding situations, such as radar, lidar, sonar, GPS, and odometry. An automatic control system is used to control navigation based on the data obtained from these sensors. This paper will discuss the use of CNN deep learning algorithm for recognizing the surrounding environment in creating the automatic navigation required by autonomous cars. The system designed will create and learn the data set that will be taken in advance and the learning outcomes will be implemented in an open simulation system. This simulation shows high accuracy in learning to navigate the autonomous car by observing the surrounding environment. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Dadahup Swamp Irrigation Area (DIR) in Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan is developed for agricultural activities to provide food security after the pandemic. The water system consists of various channels, gates, and a flood embankment structure, which is also connected to three different rivers: Barito River, Mangkatif River, and Kapuas Mumpung River. To quantify flood risk assessments in the area, we perform a hydrodynamic analysis using the unsteady flow method via HEC-RAS software version 4.1.0. We use geometrical profiles from topography measurements and the outer boundary of the Dadahup DIR as input for the hydrologic model. Our results estimate the maximum surface water level from both cross and longitudinal sections in the channels and find that several points near the flood embankment area are prone to flood events. Our modeling approach provides a preliminary assessment for the local government to formulate a flood mitigation plan and policy in the area. © 2021 IEEE.
