Achieving high performance optimization algorithms for embedded applications can be very challenging, particularly when several requirements such as high accuracy computations, short elapsed time, area cost, low power consumption and portability must be accomplished. This paper proposes a hardware implementation of the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm with passive congregation (HPPSOpc), which was developed using several floating-point arithmetic libraries. The passive congregation is a biological behavior which allows the swarm to preserve its integrity, balancing between global and local search. The HPPSOpc architecture was implemented on a Virtex5 FPGA device and validated using two multimodal benchmark problems. Synthesis, simulation and execution time results demonstrates that the passive congregation approach is a low cost solution for solving embedded optimization problems with a high performance.

Synthesis of musical instruments or human voice is a time consuming process which requires theoretical and experimental knowledge about the synthesis engine. Commonly, performers need to deal with synthesizer interfaces and a process of trial and error for creating musical sounds similar to a target sound. This drawback can be overcome by adjusting automatically the synthesizer parameters using optimization algorithms. In this paper a hybrid particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed to solve the frequency modulation (FM) matching synthesis problem. The proposed algorithm takes advantage of a shuffle process for exchanging information between particles and applies the selective passive congregation and the opposition-based learning approaches to preserve swarm diversity. Both approaches for injecting diversity are based on simple operators, preserving the easy implementation philosophy of the particle swarm optimization. The proposed hybrid particle swarm optimization algorithm was validated for a three-nested FM synthesizer, which represents a 6-dimensional multimodal optimization problem with strong epistasis. Simulation results revealed that the proposed algorithm presented promising results in terms of quality of solutions.

Node failures in Wireless Sensor Networks composed by static sensor nodes are common due to the nature of the sensor devices and the usually harsh environments in which they are deployed. Node failures can diminish the performance of the network as a whole, thus affecting its functionality in delivering the desired services. For instance, significant regions can become uncovered due to failure of several nearby nodes. This paper reports a study about the use of mobile sensor nodes acting in cooperation with static ones in order to fill gaps created by faulty static nodes. The proposed fault handling mechanism presents alternative policies with pros and cons, depending on the user priorities imposed to the system and the occurrence of failures. A discussion about this topic is presented based on results obtained by simulation of the proposed mechanisms.

Errors in diagnosing the disease is a critical risk that must be faced by any person giving treatment to the hospital. Medical treatment can not always be done with perfect accuracy. Lung cancer is one of the most deadly disease that prone to misdiagnose. In general, some practitioners tend to read cancer in x-ray rontgen image as tumor this could be fatal. To generate a diagnose, a general practitioner use three kind of examination i.e : patient History, Radiologic examination, phisical examination. In this paper, Gray color for image indexing and retrieval are investigated. The features are derived based on the statistical distribution of Harralick feature from image sample. By utilizing the proposed invariant features, the similarity measure between query and database images provides reliable retrieval results. © 2010 IEEE.

Experiments and complimentary simulations are presented to demonstrate the size-dependent infiltration and detection of variable length nucleic acids in porous silicon with controllable pore diameters in the range of 15-60 nm. The pore diameter must be tuned according to target molecule size in order to most effectively balance sensitivity and size-exclusion. A quantitative relationship between pore size (15-60 nm), nucleic acid length (up to ~5.3 nm), and sensor response is presented with smallermolecules detected more sensitively in smaller pores as long as the pore diameter is sufficient to enable molecular infiltration and binding in the pores. The density of probe molecules on the pore walls and subsequent hybridization efficiency for targetmolecule binding are also reported and are shown to depend strongly on the method of infiltration as well as the target molecule size.© 2010 IEEE.

Purpose: A preliminary study on the magnetic resonance (MRI) characteristics of (vegetable) tissue NTIRE is an emerging minimally invasive surgery technique for tissue ablation in which, microsecond, high electrical field pulses form permanent nano-scale defects in the cell membrane. Materials and Methods: The potato is used as the simplest conceivable first order tissue model for studying the MRI characteristics of electroporation, because while made of structured cells it does not have blood flow, it is relatively homogeneous and cell damage is readily visible through a natural oxidation process of the intracellular enzymes.. Clinical NTIRE sequences were applied to potato tubers and MRI sequences of the treated area were compared with colorimetric photographs. Results: A comparison of T1 weighted, T2 weighted, fluid attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) and short TI inversion recovery (STIR) of NTIRE shows that T1 weighted signals, such as FLAIR, produce brighter images of the treated areas. In contrast the images of the treated areas are completely lost with liquids enhancing and fat eliminating sequences, such as STIR. Conclusion: MRI can image tissue treated by NTIRE. A possible explanation for the findings is that by producing nanoscale defects in the cell membrane lipid bilayer, NTIRE causes an enhanced signal from the cell membrane lipids that in the treated cells are not bound anymore in a restrictive liquidgel membrane structure and have more degrees of freedom. © 2010 International Federation for Medical and Biological engineering.

Both Data hiding and data compression are very important technologies in the field of image processing. It seems that there is no relationship between data hiding and data compression because most of the data hiding mechanisms focus on information security and the data compression mechanisms emphasize the compression ratio. In fact, they are closely related. Until now, there are many literatures to discuss the secret data how to be embedded into the media image. Unfortunately, the stego-image's size will be increased when the media image is hidden a lot of secret data. In order to overcome this disadvantage, a reversible data hiding scheme based on EMD data hiding and JPEG compression technology will be proposed in this paper. According to the experimental results, we can prove that our proposed scheme still keeps high embedding capacity, security and good compression ratio. © 2010 IEEE.

Artificial Immune Systems (AISs) are composed of techniques inspired by immunology. The clonal selection principle ensures the organism adaptation to fight invading antigens by an immune response activated by the binding of antigens and antibodies. As an immune response can be elicited even when the binding between an antigen and an antibody is not perfect, an approximate binding might suffice, and a Fuzzy Logic mechanism might be the most appropriate mechanism to control such process. This paper presents a novel hybrid model based on concepts of Immune and Fuzzy Systems with applications to pattern recognition problems. The preliminary results obtained here suggest the proposed model is a promising pattern recognition tool. © 2010 IEEE.

We research the multimedia information hiding (MIH) which is a technology to overlay digital information on multimedia contents such as picture, sound, document, etc. As application to disaster management of MIH, we have developed a new technology called "PAIH" (Public Address Information Hiding) which is a technology to overlay information such as position or destination on siren sound of urgent vehicles. Siren sound is allowed to degrade of sound quality, but PAIH is required to decode correct information from siren sound with pitch shift (Doppler effect) or under noisy environment.
