The growing increase in energy consumption and the concern for the environment have driven research and use of renewable sources of energy. Within the concept of the use of renewable energy sources, the integration of Distributed Generation (DG) systems have grown. On the other hand, a subject that has gained prominence is the use of Electric Vehicles (EVs), which in response to the eminent shortage of fossil fuels. The integration of DG systems and the EVs charging has led to several discussions about the impacts that the use of these systems will bring to the low voltage distribution networks, influencing the behavior of the network. This work has the objective of analyzing the impacts caused by the integration of DG and VEs into the Distribution System (DS). Simulations were performed using OpenDSS software, which is software that was developed for the analysis of power flow in distribution systems. © 2019 IEEE.

The Superconducting Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center, a DOE National Quantum Information science Research Center, has conducted a comprehensive and coordinated study using superconducting transmon qubit chips with known performance metrics to identify the underlying materials-level sources of device-to-device performance variation. Following qubit coherence measurements, these qubits of varying base superconducting metals and substrates have been examined with various nondestructive and invasive material characterization techniques at Northwestern University, Ames National Laboratory, and Fermilab as part of a blind study. We find trends in variations of the depth of the etched substrate trench, the thickness of the surface oxide, and the geometry of the sidewall, which when combined, lead to correlations with the T1 lifetime across different devices. In addition, we provide a list of features that varied from device to device, for which the impact on performance requires further studies. Finally, we identify two low-temperature characterization techniques that may potentially serve as proxy tools for qubit measurements. These insights provide materials-oriented solutions to not only reduce performance variations across neighboring devices, but also to engineer and fabricate devices with optimal geometries to achieve performance metrics beyond the state-of-the-art values. © 2025, CC BY.

Phonons, or vibrational quanta, are behind some of the most fundamental physical phenomena in solids, including superconductivity, Raman processes, and broken-symmetry phases. It is therefore of fundamental importance to find ways to harness phonons for controlling these phenomena and developing novel quantum technologies. However, the majority of current phonon control techniques rely on the use of intense external driving fields or strong anharmonicities, which restricts their range of applications. Here, we present a scheme for controlling the intensity fluctuations in phonon emission at room temperature based on multimode ultrastrong light–matter coupling. The multimode ultrastrong coupling regime is achieved by coupling two optical phonon modes in lead halide perovskites to an array of nanoslots, which operates as a single-mode cavity. The extremely small mode volume of the nanoslots enables unprecedented coupling strengths in a cavity phonon-polariton system. In the far-detuned, low-cavity-frequency regime, we demonstrate that the nanoslot resonator mediates an effective coupling between the phonon modes, resulting in superthermal phonon bunching in thermal equilibrium, both within the same mode and between different modes. Experimental results are in good agreement with a multimode Hopfield model. Our work paves the way for the tailoring of phonons to modify charge and energy transport in perovskite materials, with potential applications in light-collecting or emitting devices. This work discusses the implementation and experimentation of a control system designed to guide a multi-robot formation of one aerial and three ground robots, in a trajectory tracking task. The implementation considers three partial formations of two robots, each one associated to a virtual structure, a straight line in the 3D space with its own formation controller. Two of the partial line formations are homogeneous formations of two ground vehicles, and the third one is a heterogeneous formation, involving a ground and an aerial vehicles. All the partial formations have the same reference for position, which is one of the ground vehicles. This also allows to discuss what would happen if this ground vehicle, the reference for all the line formations, and thus for the whole formation, presents a failure, what is considered here, in connection to an escorting mission. The result is that the designed control system is effectively able to accomplish the mission, even upon a failure of the reference robot, what is validated by experimental results also discussed here. © 2019 IEEE.

Cholera is a highly contagious and lethal waterborne disease induced by an infection with Vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae) secreting cholera toxin (CTx). Cholera toxin subunit B (CTxB) from the CTx specifically binds with monosialo-tetra-hexosyl-ganglioside (GM1) found on the exterior cell membrane of an enterocyte. Owing to the pathological process of CTx, a biomimetic electrochemical biosensor (CCB) was developed by applying GM1-expressing Caco-2 cell membrane (CCM) on the electrode surface of the biosensor for CTx detection. Briefly, the electrode surface was functionalized with CCM using the vesicle fusion method. The specific binding between GM1 and CTxB on the electrode surface was verified using confocal laser scanning microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The CTxB detection performances of the CCB, including sensitivity, selectivity, and long-term stability, were determined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Based on the results, the CCB had an excellent limit of detection of ~11.46 nM and a detection range spanning 100 ng/mL - 1 mg/mL. Further, the CCB had high selectivity for the CTxB compared to different interfering molecules, which are abundant constituents of intestinal fluid and fecal matter in the human body. The long-term stability of the CCBs was also verified for 3 weeks using EIS. Overall, the CCB was found to have an excellent potential for application to point-of-care and cost-effective testing for CTxB detection in developing countries. © 2022, The Authors. This work discusses a trajectory tracking task accomplished by a group of three Bebop 2 quadrotors working cooperatively to transport a load. Such unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are considered as a triangular formation, and the load, a triangle-shaped structure, is attached to them through massless flexible cables. The reason to use three quadrotors is the gain in terms of the payload capability and the stability of the load, since it is attached to three vehicles, staying vertically aligned with the center of mass of the triangle correspondent to the formation. A formation controller, actually a kinematic controller applied to a virtual massless robot correspondent to the center of mass of the triangle, is adopted, which generates reference velocities for the three UAVs, whose movement generates the movement and reshaping of the triangular formation. Then, individual dynamic compensators are adopted for each UAV, whose input is the reference velocity delivered by the formation controller. Finally, experimental results are discussed, which validate the proposal.
