Audio rendering of mathematical expressions has accessibility benefits for people with visual impairment. Seeking a systematic way to measure participants' perception of the rendered formulae with audio cues, we investigate the design of performance metrics to capture the distance between reference and perceived math expressions. We propose EAR-Math, a methodological approach for user-based evaluation of math rendering against a baseline. EAR-Math measures systems' performance using three fine-grained error rates based on the structural elements, arithmetic operators, numbers and identifiers in a formula. The proposed methodology and metrics were successfully applied in a pilot study, where 5 sighted and 2 blind participants evaluated 39 stimuli rendered by MathPlayer in Greek. In the obtained results, we observed that structural elements had the highest mean and variance of errors, which improved from 18% in the first attempt to 10% and 7% in two following attempts. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

This paper presents a planning approach using Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) modeled as a Subsumption Architecture to generate plans for driving trains. The main idea of a planning strategy is to generate a sequence of actions for an agent, which can use these actions to change its environment. CBR allows using prior experiences for new task assignments. In the proposed ap-proach, each previous experience (if not applicable) is adjusted us-ing one or more adaptation methods like substitutive and genetic algorithm. Our interest is to create a flexible architecture for an agent and apply it to simulate train conductions. We expect that the plans generated by this approach generate better results com-pared to another studies already developed for the area mainly considering fuel consumption and travel time.

Multi-Processors Systems-on-Chip (MPSoCs) are demanding for high performance, low power and high density, and therefore, three-dimensional integrated circuits (3DIC) emerge as a solution to integrate these systems. In order to appropriately interconnect the layers of these systems in terms of flexibility and scalability, a Network-on-Chip (NoC) is typically employed. In this paper, we argue about the scenario of 3D designs, covering all important issues about this new concept. In agreement with all features discussed in this paper, we have proposed a hierarchical 3D topology that meets well the reality of these designs. Experimental results analyze different topologies and show the large benefits in area and power of our proposal. © 2013 IEEE.

Vehicular networks will play an important role in future smart cities. Connected vehicles will be able to provide entertainment content to their users in order to make traffic situations more enjoyable. However, the amount of bandwidth available to the vehicles may not be enough to satisfy all of them. In this case, we can say that a conflict of interest occurred and then must the solved as fair as possible. In this work, we propose a solution to solve this kind of collective conflict. Our solution balances users' satisfaction with resources consumption as it is capable of choosing the most adequate resolution algorithm based on the current application's situation. The results showed that with our solution it was possible to achieve adequate satisfaction levels, with low response time and controlled network usage.

Background: Surveillance of health care-associated infections is an essential component of infection prevention programs, but conventional systems are labor intensive and performance dependent. Objective: To develop an automatic surveillance and classification system for health care-associated bloodstream infection (HABSI), and to evaluate its performance by comparing it with a conventional infection control personnel (ICP)-based surveillance system. Methods: We developed a Web-based system that was integrated into the medical information system of a 2200-bed teaching hospital in Taiwan. The system automatically detects and classifies HABSIs. Results: In this study, the number of computer-detected HABSIs correlated closely with the number of HABSIs detected by ICP by department (n=20;r=.999 P<.001) and by time (n=14;r=.941;P<.001). Compared with reference standards, this system performed excellently with regard to sensitivity (98.16%), specificity (99.96%), positive predictive value (95.81%), and negative predictive value (99.98%). The system enabled decreasing the delay in confirmation of HABSI cases, on average, by 29 days. Conclusions: This system provides reliable and objective HABSI data for quality indicators, improving the delay caused by a conventional surveillance system. © 2020 JMIR Publications Inc. The TODIM (an acronym in Portuguese for Interative Multi-criteria Decision Making) method has recently been extended firstly to fuzzy and next to intuitionistic fuzzy environments with promising results. In this paper, we further consider the extension of TODIM to interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy (IVIF) environments. Two case studies are used to illustrate the approach to multi-criteria decision making. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the presented method.

The electoral system is vital to the democratic process. Several countries have adopted different mechanisms for the electoral process, from paper ballots to electronic voting machines and online voting. There are several benefits of digital polls conducted over the internet, but it also comes with vulnerabilities and forms of manipulation. With the intention of facilitating the development and validation of online voting systems an object-oriented framework was developed for protocols and online elections, where it is possible to implement and test new protocols without the need to develop an entire system. This paper proposes an incremental, structural and contextual validation method for Nested Context Language (NCL) documents. As part of the proposed method, we define a declarative metalanguage to ensure low coupling between NCL structure and the validator code, which simplifies the validation of new language profiles. Requirements such as incremental processing and multilingual messages are also covered by this work. We present an implementation of this method using component architecture as a proof of concept and also conduct a performance evaluation to compare the traditional and incremental validation approaches. © 2013 The Brazilian computer Society.
