An important problem in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is the occurrence of failures that lead to the disconnection of parts of the network, compromising the final results achieved by the WSN operation. A way to overcome such problem is to provide a reliable connection to support the connectivity via other types of nodes that communicate with the sensor nodes. This paper proposes the usage of a network composed by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as a relay network to guarantee the delivery of data produced by WSN nodes on the ground to the users. Results from simulations of the proposed technique are provided and discussed. ©2010 IEEE.

Errors in diagnosing the disease is a critical risk that must be faced by any person giving treatment to the hospital. Medical treatment can not always be done with perfect accuracy. Lung cancer is one of the most deadly disease that prone to misdiagnose. In general, some practitioners tend to “read” cancer in x-ray rontgen image as tumor this could be fatal. To generate a diagnose, a general practitioner use three kind of examination i.e : patient History, Radio logic examination, phisical examination. In this paper, Gray color for image indexing and retrieval are investigated. The features are derived based on the statistical distribution of Harralick feature from image sample. By utilizing the proposed invariant features, the similarity measure between query and database images provides reliable retrieval results.

A well know problem in the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) research area is the usage of appropriate strategies to setup the sensor nodes such that they may accomplish sensing missions. This problem refers to the selection of appropriate nodes to perform the different tasks required to the missions' accomplishment and may be thus characterized as an instance of the task and resource allocation problem. Traditional approaches consider pre-planned strategies, which are not flexible to deal with changes in the network and environment operating conditions. This paper presents an enhanced agent-oriented strategy, which consists of a usage of mobile intelligent agents to disseminate missions and nodes' information over the network, as well as stationary software agents installed in the sensor nodes to provide advanced reasoning apparatus for decision making purposes. The proposed enhancement complements the original agent-based approach with robustness features required to overcome extreme adverse conditions in which an ordinary WSN presents poor results. Results from simulations provide evidences of the efficiency of the complete enhanced approach. ©2010 IEEE.

Artificial Immune Systems (AISs) are composed of techniques inspired by immunology. The clonal selection principle ensures the organism adaptation to fight invading antigens by an immune response activated by the binding of antigens and antibodies. As an immune response can be elicited even when the binding between an antigen and an antibody is not perfect, an approximate binding might suffice, and a Fuzzy Logic mechanism might be the most appropriate mechanism to control such process. This paper presents a novel hybrid model based on concepts of Immune and Fuzzy Systems with applications to pattern recognition problems. The preliminary results obtained here suggest the proposed model is a promising pattern recognition tool.

Cluster analysis is used in several research areas to classify data sets in groups by their similar characteristics. Metaheuristic-based techniques, such as Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), have been applied in order to increase the clustering algorithm performance. GA and ACO-based clustering algorithms are capable of efficiently and automatically forming natural groups from a pre-defined number of clusters. This paper presents a GA and an ACO algorithm to the clustering problem. Both algorithms were refined using local search in order to improve the clustering accuracy. The results are compared on numeric UCI databases.

The decisions made by the operation commander in emergency situations should be made quickly to save lives. To avoid late or bad decisions, the commander must construct a situational awareness. The irregular arrival flow of information, uncertainty, information overload and lack of persistence are the main factors that hinder this task. To minimize these effects we propose an architecture composed of mobile devices and a decision support system to be used in the command post. The main point in the system design is the cognitive overload. Therefore, heuristics about the usage of the information by experienced commanders were elicited and implemented.

Sensor networks are being used in several emerging applications not even imagined some years ago due to advances in sensing, computing, and communication techniques. However, these advances also pose various challenges that must be faced. One important challenge is related to the autonomous capability needed to setup and adapt the networks, which decentralizes the control of the network, saving communication and energy resources. Middleware technology helps in addressing this kind of problem, but there is still a need for additional solutions, particularly considering dynamic changes in users' requirements and operation conditions. This paper presents an agent-based framework acting as an integral part of a middleware to support autonomous setup and adaptation of sensor networks. It adds interoperability among heterogeneous nodes in the network, by means of autonomous behavior and reasoning. These features also address the needs for system setup and adaptations in the network, reducing the communication overhead and decentralizing the decision making mechanism. Additionally, preliminary results are also presented. © 2009 IEEE.

Thread level parallelism and multi-core processors are current alternatives to increase performance of general-purpose applications. In the same way, networks-on-ohip (NoCs) are the main alternatives for supporting packet throughput for the next generations of many-core processors. NPoC (network processor on chip) is a proposal to increase the performance of programmable NoC routers and multi-cluster NoC architectures using interleaved multithreading (IMT) technique. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to present the design impact of interleaved multithreading for network processors on chip focusing on area and performance feasibility. Results show that NPoC-based router has an acceptable and similar area relative to a conventional NoC, and higher performance up to 7.1% than the same NPoC version without IMT.
