High-throughput microarrays inform us on different outlooks of the molecular mechanisms underlying the function of cells and organisms. While computational analysis for the microarrays show good performance, it is still difficult to infer modules of multiple co-regulated genes. Here, we present a novel classification method to identify the gene modules associated with cancers from microarray data. The proposed approach is based on 'hypernetworks', a hypergraph model consisting of vertices and weighted hyperedges. The hypernetwork model is inspired by biological networks and its learning process is suitable for identifying interacting gene modules. Applied to the analysis of microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles on multiple human cancers, the hypernetwork classifiers identified cancer-related miRNA modules. The results show that our method performs better than decision trees and naive Bayes. The biological meaning of the discovered miRNA modules has been examined by literature search.

Molecular wire construction using DNA-directed self-assembly of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) has been attempted. MWNTs were selected owing to their exceptional electrical and structural properties. DNA, which possesses specific molecular recognition properties, served as the engine for the assembly. Non-crosshybridizing (NCH) sequences were designed to impart specificity and high throughput reaction. Stepwise manufacturing of the wire was accomplished by first functionalizing the NCH 20 base pair single-stranded sequences to the tips of MWNT using amide linkage. The adducts were then utilized to self-assemble 1D nanotube wire through DNA hybridization reactions between two complementary ssDNAs functionalized to the MWNT tips. TEM, epi-fluorescent microscopy and AFM analyses showed successful assemblies of micrometer-scale 1D MWNT-DNA wires, ranging from 2.7-20 mum. The results demonstrate great potentials of the DNA-guided self-assembly process, which would provide an uncomplicated, versatile and inexpensive way to manufacture micrometer-scale molecular wires.

The Department of Technology Systems (TSYS) at East Carolina university has implemented a new faculty mentoring process to enable junior faculty members to learn from senior faculty members as they prepare for a career in academia. Five tenured professors and associate professors in the TSYS department have recently established a new process to mentor faculty members within the department who have begun not yet completed their initial tenure process at a major university. This process includes a series of workshops regarding academic performance expectations during the early stages of an academic career. Our commitment to new faculty takes on several related, yet distinct features. Examples of these initiatives include: 1) reduced workloads for new faculty for the first two years to enable them to generate individual and collaborative research activities, funded grants, and publications, 2) periodic university-wide training to learn policies and procedures that affect day-to-day activities on a college campus, 3) periodic workshops hosted by senior faculty mentors, and 4) one-on-one discussions between senior faculty members and junior faculty members to encourage candid dialogue between professional colleagues. Another feature of the mentorship philosophy is a proposal to the dean of the college to offer newly hired faculty a contractual start date of July 1steach year instead of starting their contract one week prior to the start of fall classes, normally in late August. This additional period of time will be used to train new faculty in essential policies and procedures, to complete a variety of administrative tasks on campus, to get a head start on preparing for classes in the fall, and cleaning up those supplemental tasks that accompany every move to a new location. In scientific and engineering scenarios we can notice the predominance of explicit knowledge being manipulated and distributed, which makes recommender systems very useful in this environment. But along with a knowledge management approach this kind of system can support the organization in better identifying competences, help engage users in a continuous and dynamic knowledge exchange, and customize knowledge dissemination as much as possible. In this work we detail a collaborative recommender system which is used in a Knowledge Management Environment for Scientific and Engineering contexts; we show how this approach can be aimed at a KM process and how this approach can deal with other kinds of knowledge used in research centers and universities.

Customer relationship management -CRM -is a broad term that can cover every mode of customer interaction. This concept has been widely used in business language, enabling companies to gain more knowledge about their customers which, in its turn, can be used to improve marketing and sales targeting, improving their results. university and research institutions (URIs), as any other organizations, also need to cater to the needs of their clients, which may be: society in general, their students, researchers and collaborators; other institutions -of a research or commercial nature with which they interact (supplying data, results from research work, consultancy work, and the execution of partnerships) -or governments that make use of their teaching practices and results from their research work. So, this work is a CRM proposal for URIs, studying the differences between the academic/scientific and business world and proposing an environment to manage all kinds of relationships in the academic and scientific scenario.

Decision-making involves choosing between one ore more alternatives, to achieve one ore more goals. This process is composed of a series of steps, ranging from the identification of the problem itself, going trough the definition of criteria that characterize possible solutions to the problem, to the decision-making itself, in which a possible solution to the exposed problem is finally adopted. These steps can be performed by a single person or by a group of people. In group decisions, the solution choice at the end of the process must be effectively made by the group. To support this process, there are decision support systems that employ different approaches, supporting groups or not. This paper defines the decision-making process, presenting benefits of group decision and describes a system to support decisions in large scale groups. Participatory design in the BamPetro environment preservation project seeks to bring a large number of end users into the design process to take into account different perspectives, and help the group cope with multi-objective decisions. These decisions demand synergy among users of the environment preservation project, even though they represent different areas, competencies, political agendas and social interests.

In this paper, we propose a new type of information-theoretic approach to variable selection. Many approaches have been proposed in estimating the importance of input variables. The majority of these approaches have focused upon output errors. We here introduce an approach concerning internal representations. First, we delete an input unit with corresponding connection weights. Then, by examining some change in hidden unit activation with and without a input variable, we can extract an important variable. We apply this method to an artificial data in which the number of hidden units is redundantly increased so as to clearly show improved performance and the stability of our method. Then, we apply the method to the cabinet approval ratings in which better interpretation of input variables can be given

The aim of this work is to analyze interval fuzzy S-implications and interval automorphisms. Starting from any fuzzy S-implication, it is shown how to obtain an interval fuzzy S-implication canonically. We proved that such interval fuzzy S-implications meet the optimality property and preserve the same properties satisfied by fuzzy S-implications. In addition, commutative diagrams are used in order to relate fuzzy S-implications to interval fuzzy S-implications, and to understand how interval automorphisms act on interval S-implications, generating other interval fuzzy S-implications.

The following article presents a computational methodology to assist the assessment of tympanic pathologies, particularly chronic otitis media, based on digital otoscopic images. A computational system which implements the methodology is described. This approach does not impose additional effort to the acquisition protocol and diagnosis of tympanic pathologies. In preliminary tests, it has shown precision and easiness of use. The presented methodology and system were tested by the Otitis Media Center of Brazil (***) with a case base of 660 patients, resulting in 1320 bilateral tympanic images.
