In this paper we consider a process which complements the learning process for building personal knowledge through the exchange of knowledge chains. This approach consists in the partial automatization of the process of creating knowledge chains, through the use of the technology from agents, ontologies and data mining. The agents will monitor all media used by the learner, and will classify its content using an ontology. From there, we want to create and recommend a chain to the learner. This point became important when we observed that the learners weren't motivated to create their chains, which, normally, takes a lot of effort

The use of local search in evolutionary techniques is believed to enhance the performance of the algorithms, giving rise to memetic or hybrid algorithms. However, in many continuous optimization problems the additional cost required by local search may be prohibitive. Thus we propose the local learning of the objective and constraint functions prior to the local search phase of memetic algorithms, based on the samples gathered by the population through the evolutionary process. The local search operator is then applied over this approximated model. We perform some experiments by combining our approach with a real-coded genetic algorithm. The results demonstrate the benefit of the proposed methodology for costly black-box functions.

Protein-protein and protein nucleic acid interactions are vitally important for a wide range of biological processes, including regulation or gene expression, protein synthesis, and replication and assembly of many viruses. We have developed machine learning approaches for predicting which amino acids of a protein participate in its interactions with other proteins and/or nucleic acids, using only the proiein sequence as input. In this paper, we describe an application of classifiers trained on datasets of well-characterized protein-protein and protein-RNA complexes for which experimental structures are available. We apply these classifiers to the problem of predicting protein and RNA binding sites in the sequence of a clinically important protein for which the structure is not known: the regulatory protein Rev, essential for the replication of HIV-I and other lentiviruses. We compare our predictions with published biochemical, genetic and partial structural information for HIV-1 and EIAV Rev and with our own published experimental mapping of RNA binding sites in EIAV Rev. The predicted and experimentally determined binding sites are in very good agreement. The ability to predict reliably the residues of a protein that directly contribute to specific binding events - without the requirement for structural information regarding either the protein or complexes in which it participates - can potentially generate new disease intervention strategies.

The Collaborative Large-scale Engineering Analysis Network for Environmental Research (CLEANER) Project Office has been established with funding from the National science Foundation (NSF) to the university of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a coalition of 11 other institutions. The project office is coordinating the creation of a strategic plan consisting of research, cyberinfrastructure, and education plans that set forth a roadmap for the collaborative engineering analysis network for the study of environmental problems. This report will be completed by July 2007 and requires input from K-12 educators, administrators and other stakeholders in K-12 education. This paper describes the CLEANER project, provides an example of the CLEANER Education Committee's vision for the K-12 area and lists contacts for further information. The intention of this paper is to elicit input from the K-12 engineering education community, including K-12 educators, on how the CLEANER Education Plan could better meet the future needs of K-12 students and educators © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.

The advantage of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided surgery, in which MR images taken during surgery are used to guide the surgery, has been recognized recently. However, there is a problem, due to long imaging time of MRI, that it is difficult to capture the respiratory organ motion. It is often a constraint that the patient must hold his or her breath, especially in the treatment of the abdominal region. Consequently, this paper proposes a method of eliminating this constraint in MRI-guided surgery by real-time monitoring of the movement of the organ involved in the surgery by means of the signal derived from MRI. Specifically, the navigator echo is extracted in imaging during surgery. The movement of the organ involved in surgery is detected on the basis of the change in the calculated projection profile, and the results are presented to the surgeon. In this study, the procedure is built into a 1.5-T clinical MRI system. The feasibility of the proposed system was examined under clinical conditions by evaluating its accuracy and delay in a phantom experiment, and also in an in vivo experiment on the liver of a volunteer. The results are reported in this paper. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This article reviews the way in which the spread of computing technology has impacted the search and seizure policies of relevant U.S. government agencies. Among the changes that have occurred is a total redesign by the Justice Department of its search and seizure guidelines and policies. the article discusses numerous questions that involve search and seizure procedures as they pertain to the use of computing technology.

We present the use of the polysaccharide chitosan for immobilizing biomolecules on microfabricated device surfaces. The main advantages of chitosan are its abundance of primary amine groups and its ability to be electrodeposited. Biomolecules are easily attached to chitosan 's amines by standard glutaraldehyde chemistry. The electrodeposition of chitosan allows accurate spatial and temporal control of biomolecule placement. We have demonstrated this biofunctionalization method for two different bioMEMS devices: a biophotonic sensor and a micromechanical biosensor. We have successfully assembled probe DNA on each of them and detected hybridization with target DNA as a demonstration of sensor operation. Here, we briefly present the fabrication procedure and testing results for both of these bioMEMS sensing devices

To develop software for embedded systems the designer must take into account different kinds of problems and complexities. The main issues are related to late integration with the target hardware and the separation of the development environments from target execution platforms. Due to the fact that in most situations they are developed using low-level programming languages, approaches to develop complex software systems, such as component based software development, cannot be used at all. In this work we introduce a component based development process that integrates colored Petri nets and a component model in order to introduce better abstraction mechanisms in the modelling, analysis and verification processes for embedded software systems. ©2005 IEEE.
