Hyperspectral imaging is useful for applications ranging from medical diagnostics to crop monitoring;however, traditional scanning hyperspectral imagers are prohibitively slow and expensive for widespread adoption. Snapshot techniques exist but are often confined to bulky bench-top setups or have low spatio-spectral resolution. In this paper, we propose a novel, compact, and inexpensive computational camera for snapshot hyperspectral imaging. Our system consists of a repeated spectral filter array placed directly on the image sensor and a diffuser placed close to the sensor. Each point in the world maps to a unique pseudorandom pattern on the spectral filter array, which encodes multiplexed spatio-spectral information. A sparsity-constrained inverse problem solver then recovers the hyperspectral volume with good spatio-spectral resolution. By using a spectral filter array, our hyperspectral imaging framework is flexible and can be designed with contiguous or non-contiguous spectral filters that can be chosen for a given application. Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Enhancing Label Consistency on Document-level Named Entity Recognition

Summary: Named entity recognition (NER) is a fundamental part of extracting information from documents in biomedical applications. A notable advantage of NER is its consistency in extracting biomedical entities in a document context. Although existing document NER models show consistent predictions, they still do not meet our expectations. We investigated whether the adjectives and prepositions within an entity cause a low label consistency, which results in inconsistent predictions. In this paper, we present our method, ConNER, which enhances the label dependency of modifiers (e.g., adjectives and prepositions) to achieve higher label agreement. ConNER refines the draft labels of the modifiers to improve the output representations of biomedical entities. The effectiveness of our method is demonstrated on four popular biomedical NER datasets;in particular, its efficacy is proved on two datasets with 7.5–8.6% absolute improvements in the F1 score. We interpret that our ConNER method is effective on datasets that have intrinsically low label consistency. The development of game technology has opened up new possibilities in learning methods through educational games. However, in Indonesia, the application of this concept is lacking. One lesson that can benefit from educational games is Indonesian History in class X, with a focus on history in the pre-literacy period. This study aims to create a puzzle-adventure type of digital game that can help educate students about the pre-literacy period, developed with Unity, and uses WebGL as a target device while referring to Indonesia's revised 2013 national curriculum. The result of this research is the creation of a digital game that can be played on average of 254.36 seconds, with potential for educational use. A survey result shows that many of the ancient objects and some of the ages are well-recognized. However, the survey also shows many of the gameplay aspects, such as UI, gameplay features, and adventure elements, need improvements.

Autonomous robots and humans need to create a coherent 3D representation of their peripersonal space in order to interact with nearby objects. Recent studies in visual neuroscience suggest that the small coordinated head/eye movements that humans continually perform during fixation provides useful depth information. In this work, we mimic such a behavior on a humanoid robot and propose a computational model that extracts depth information without requiring the kinematic model of the robot. First, we show that, during fixational head/eye movements, proprioceptive cues and optic flow lie on a low dimensional subspace that is a function of the depth of the target. Then, we use the generative adaptive subspace self-organizing map (GASSOM) to learn these depth-dependent subspaces. The depth of the target is eventually decoded using a winner-take-all strategy. The proposed model is validated on a simulated model of the iCub robot.

Virtual and augmented reality environments have been adopted in medicine as a means to enhance the clinician's view of the anatomy and facilitate the performance of minimally invasive procedures. Their value is truly appreciated during interventions where the surgeon cannot directly visualize the targets to be treated, such as during cardiac procedures performed on the beating heart. These environments must accurately represent the real surgical field and require seamless integration of pre- and intra-operative imaging, surgical tracking, and visualization technology in a common framework centered around the patient. This review begins with an overview of minimally invasive cardiac interventions, describes the architecture of a typical surgical guidance platform including imaging, tracking, registration and visualization, highlights both clinical and engineering accuracy limitations in cardiac image guidance, and discusses the translation of the work from the laboratory into the operating room together with typically encountered challenges. © 2008 IEEE.

The four dye fluorescence detection strategy is a widely used approach to automated DNA sequence analysis. An important aspect of data processing in this approach is the multicomponent analysis to deduce the concentrations of four fluorophores from fluorescence emission intensities at four different wavelengths. This requires knowledge of the correct transformation matrix M. The matrix M is a function both of the fluorophores employed and the fluorescence detection system. M is typically determined either by a calibration process with individual dyes, or by choosing four well-separated individual peaks corresponding to the four different dyes. Both are time-consuming and complicated procedures for routine use. An automatic scheme for finding M directly from raw sequence data is presented here. This facilitates data analysis and the underlying algorithm may also find utility in other multispectral applications.
