The nearby Sun-like star GJ 758 hosts a cold substellar companion, GJ 758 B, at a projected separation of 30 au, previously detected in high-contrast multi-band photometric observations. In order to better constrain the companion’s physical characteristics, we acquired the first low-resolution (R ∼ 50) near-infrared spectrum of it using the high-contrast hyperspectral imaging instrument Project 1640 on Palomar Observatory’s 5 m Hale telescope. We obtained simultaneous images in 32 wavelength channels covering the Y , J, and H bands (∼952–1770 nm), and used data processing techniques based on principal component analysis to efficiently subtract chromatic background speckle-noise. GJ 758 B was detected in four epochs during 2013 and 2014. Basic astrometric measurements confirm its apparent northwest trajectory relative to the primary star, with no clear signs of orbital curvature. Spectra of SpeX/IRTF observed T dwarfs were compared to the combined spectrum of GJ 758 B, with χ2 minimization suggesting a best fit for spectral type T7.0±1.0, but with a shallow minimum over T5–T8. Fitting of synthetic spectra from the BT-Settl13 model atmospheres gives an effective temperature Teff = 741 ± 25 K and surface gravity log g = 4.3 ± 0.5 dex (cgs). Our derived best-fit spectral type and effective temperature from modeling of the low-resolution spectrum suggest a slightly earlier and hotter companion than previous findings from photometric data, but do not rule out current results, and confirm GJ 758 B as one of the coolest sub-stellar companions to a Sun-like star to date. Graphically realistic, haptics-enabled, virtual reality surgical simulations are becoming increasingly popular training tools for neurosurgical procedures and surgical skills. Compared with traditional training models, virtual simulations are safe, versatile, consistent, and are relatively cost effective. Most simulations are deficient, however, in representing the diverse anatomical variations that occur clinically. In this work, we describe the design and implementation of a pipeline to create patient-specific surgical scenarios for simulator-based training of the endoscopic third ventriculostomy: the procedure of choice for treating obstructive hydrocephalus. © 2014 The authors and IOS Press. Image guidance can provide surgeons with valuable contextual information during a medical intervention. Often, image guidance systems require considerable infrastructure, setup-time, and operator experience to be utilized. Certain procedures performed at bedside are susceptible to navigational errors that can lead to complications. We present an application for mobile devices that can provide image guidance using augmented reality to assist in performing neurosurgical tasks. A methodology is outlined that evaluates this mode of visualization from the standpoint of perceptual localization, depth estimation, and pointing performance, in scenarios derived from a neurosurgical targeting task. By measuring user variability and speed we can report objective metrics of performance for our augmented reality guidance system.© 2014 The authors and IOS Press. All rights reserved.

Usually, the forensic human identification through dental biometrics is performed manually by human experts. An important alternative to facilitate and expedite this task is to use an ADIS (Automated Dental Identification System). In ADIS, the selection of most discrimintive teeth can improve substancialy the subject identification rates. In this paper we propose the use of BPSO (Binary Particle Swarm Optimization) in order to select optimum subsets of most discriminative teeth shape descriptors, and, consequently, to improve the rates of correct person identification. Results obtained in our experiments have confirmed our hypothesis that some teeth are more discriminative than others and should be priorized during the forensic human identification based on dental recognition. The use of BPSO have reduced the EER from 20% to 10%, and have reduced the rank-k from k=15 to k=4 in order to reach 100% of correct teeth retrieval. ©2014 International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, ICAI 2014 - WORLDCOMP *** right reserved.

Technology to automatically synthesize linguistically accurate and natural-looking animations of American Sign Language (ASL) from an easy-to-update script would make it easier to add ASL content to websites and media, thereby increasing information accessibility for many people who are deaf. We are investigating the synthesis of ASL facial expressions, which are grammatically required and essential to the meaning of sentences. To support this research, we have enhanced a virtual human character with face controls following the MPEG-4 Facial Action Parameter standard. In a user-study, we determined that these controls were sufficient for conveying understandable animations of facial expressions.
